In regards to Game of Thrones, Highlander Adrian Paul states at his official website:

"Yes, I know of A Song of Fire and, in fact, it is a project at HBO called “Game of Thrones” that is about to start casting. I think it is a really interesting project and I have read the first script. We are waiting to see where the casting process goes, since, yes, it would be fun to be a part of this."

I am (or maybe that should be was after seeing The Source...) a huge Highlander fan, both the original movie and the tv series.

But I'm not sure how well Paul would fit into Thrones, or ASOIAF in general. Highlander is the only thing I've seen him in that I thought he worked well. Duncan MacCleod is closest in nature to Ned (honor above all), but I don't see Paul as Ned at all.

Maybe Stannis.

I'd love to see Paul pull it off and make me eat my doubts, but I'm not seeing it.

ETA: A bit of a late addition, but Doran? Paul has a Dorne (Medeterranean) look.

And just saw this on his site:
"Narrates "Dreamsongs" by Gerorge R Martin, which receives a nomination in the Audio Publishers Association 'Audies' awards for excellence in audio books. "

Adrian Paul is not only a good actor, but I think good for the role of Ned. Ned is a brooding, conflicted figure who needs to express more with his face and actions than with his words (despite what the leaked script would have you believe; that added banter with Jaime at the feast is wasted space). And if anyone can do that, Adrian Paul can.

That said, I agree he'd be even better as Benjen, briefest cameo as it is.

But if we, the fans, are looking for an extended Game of Thrones TV series that garners both respect and ratings, you can't get a better name than Adrian Paul to lure in fantasy fans (fantasy fangirls, especially - I was literally amazed at the skewed female-to-male ratio, eighty-twenty, at an autograph-signing gathering when Paul took the stage a few short years back).

I suppose the question would be: does the series need to lure in fans it may already have?

Not sure. People who watched Highlander might be tuning in anyway, especially if buzz is good.

I'm just glad the script is getting around. If buzz is going onto "name" actor websites, then the wheels are turning, and I am one happy little Yea.

I think he has gotten a little old to play Ned.

But I definitely could see him as Stannis.

Stannis is younger than Ned, even though he seems older.

I think Adrian would be all benefit for Thrones. I do think he can pull off a number of different characters from the series, but I would put him as Ned. Whatever he has done in his acting career, his role on the Highlander series was very well done. I too see a huge resemblence in the characers of Duncan Macleod and Ned Stark.

I also agree that his name ans status will help bring in veiwers that Thrones may not have pulled simply due to his fan base. And those who know of the sci fi/fantasy genre do know his name. I think he would also fit into the budget restraints a Cable TV series would have, as opposed to some of the names I have seen put forth.

He is a very capable actor, with direct experiance with this sort of story. And, he wants to do it. that, I think, is a big step in it's own right. I believe he is the right choice for our books brought to TV.

I also think that allot of us need to be prepared for a difference in what our minds see as our characters, and the reality of what can be done as far as making a great series that is well inturpereted and still is a profitable situation for its makers. And i think the age of some of our characters will be adjusted to make it all sensible.

The story is so incredible, as long as you have good actors and a director who shares a majority vision of our story, it can't go wrong. I am excited for Thrones to have made it this far, and I think adding Adrian can only take it farther.

Post some to his better scenes in Highlander then ;) Seriously, stick Laurence Olivier and Clark Gable in Dynasty and they'd look shit as well.

I'm sorry, I just think he's bad. Even in the Highlander series, which I actually liked.

And of course there's this.

I agree. I think Adrian Paul looks great- but he isn't a good actor. I watched Highlander and I never thought he was very good- but it wasn't a big budget production (like HBO will be) and he was the best they could get...

HBO could do better than this.

The reason HBO will give Game a bigger budget is for CGI, costume, set design not to get really expensive actors. Adrian Paul would likely be the biggest actor in a full time role.

:agree: I liked him in the TV series, really. I can't picture him in asoiaf though.

I recall Paul having some pretty good scenes on occasion in the course of Highlander, and a few years back I saw him in a (non-fantasy) film in which I thought he had a good presence. That his acting can seem inconsistent is, I fact, largely due to the fact that he ends up in shows with inconsistent quality.

He's not a great actor, by any stretch of the imagination. But I think he's about as good as your average actor on TV.

But look at HBO's past caliber. Gandolfini. Edie Falco. ANYONE on Deadwood. We're talking real acting ability here. That's what I really care about in this ASOIAF show. Real. Fucking. Acting. I know the story because I'm reading it. The special effects in my brain are better than anything that could ever be realized on screen. The acting is what I'm signing up for.

To be fair, IMO, all you can know about ANY actors ability is limited as to what extent you have SEEN their ability. You mentioned other actors used in HBO series that had no real evidence of their extrodidary acting ability before they were in said HBO project. You may not like what you have seen by Adrian Paul, and you are entitled to your opinions of course. But to say some one can't act, is pretty powerful, especially when you might not have been able to see someone's true acting ability with what that actor has been allowed to do. (The lead guy in deadwood for example, I just saw some of his work before Deadwood, he played a rocker in the movie "Rockstar", it was cheesy, which in no way NOW catigorizes his acting ability since we have been able to see him act under different circumstances.)

Obviously I disagree with your opinions on this subject. And that's OK. I just think saying some can't act because of what you have seen them in is mean, for lack of a better term. IMO, you can't be a working actor for any real length of time and NOT have acting chops. This business will expose you IMO. And most of the time, an actor is being told how to "act" by someone else. If you tell me run in a straight line for 50 yards, and I do it perfectly, but it turns out the right thing to do was to run in a jagged line, is it really my "fault"?

I think Adrian would surprise those who doubt him if given a chance.
