Migey
Hey. Sorry for all you guys who are bored of my many threads asking if this or that is worth reading, but this time the search function was broken for me so i couldn't ask really in another thread (there is another Malazon thread, but thats for questions about the series once you ave already read it i think)Is it worth me reading it? I liked WoT (although of course, the books 7-10 were awful) and i like series such as The First Law, if that makes any difference.
End of Disc One
Although opinions are divided and it's not for everyone, you really should give it a shot. Most people who like it really love it, and you won't know if you're one of those people until you try it out. There's nothing else like it. Stego
No. It's not worth reading.Too much good stuff out there to waste time on Malazan.
Ran
You might very well like it. Try the first two books. If one or the other works for you, keep reading until you get tired of it. No guarantees that you'll want to go the long haul, but personally, the first three novels were rather mindblowing in terms of the grandeur and pyrokinetics of it all. Errant Bard
Try it if you're 13/14, don't give a toss about plot, consistency or character development, and like superhero epic battles.

Zach H
I think it's worth reading, but then again I found First Law kind of boring and I think Jordan's prose is mostly unreadable. If you want a Martin-style epic filled with focused characterization and careful plot build ups, look elsewhere. If you want a sword and sorcery-style epic that brings a lot of action, humor, and some interesting ideas to the table, Malazan is definitely worth a look. In recent history the only series that have hooked me as much as Malazan are Mieville's Bas-Lag books and Stover's Caine work.

Sariel
Another one of these threads? Isn't there some sort of search function available?
Roland_85
It's really funny how people who recommend the series are so considerate of others' tastes, while those that don't are bluntness itself. The Malazan Book of the Fallen was my favorite fantasy series up until book 6 came out. Since then it's been on a steady decline, but at its lowest point it is still unbelievably better than WoT's low points. Thing is, Book 1 is a bit uncertain as far as beginnings go. If you read it and you're unsure whether to go on, DO go on, cause Book 2 is an Olympian improvement in practically every possible aspect. Is it worth reading? Yes, it is WELL worth reading. Whether you'll like it or not though, nobody can tell you :)BLOG PORN ALERT! Ignore the rest if shameless plugs offend you.I've been doing a series of Malazan reviews on my blog. Here's what I've done so far, if you think it might be helpful to you:Malazan: An Introduction, Part IMalazan: An Introduction, Part IIMalazan: The early books - GenabackisMalazan: The early books - Seven Cities Malazan: The early books - LetherMalazan: Novels of the Malazan Empire - Night of KnivesMalazan: The recent books - The Bonehunters
Trencher
No.Skip it. I read the first 2 books and they were awful. Apparently they somehow get worse.
Errant Bard
Oh, right, for reference, it is actually hard to find a general review thread not closed about Malazan, as most Malazan rant start from latter book reviews or thread drifts, but:the Malazan threadThe Malazan book of the fallen is doneDust of DreamsCrippled GodQuestions about MalazanMalazan vs WOT (by KO, ten seconds into the second round)also, why is my results for the term malazan limited to the first 200 ? Imagica
Couldn't even finish the first book, despite 3 tries. I'd just say that if the author deliberately tried to avoid common narrative devices/cliches, he failed. Cliches they may be, but they exist for a reason. Oh, and characterization is awful. Do not expect anything on par with GRRM or Abercrombie. Still, if you care for scope and epic feel, you might like it.
RedEyedGhost
It's one of those series that everybody reacts to differently, and liking or dis-liking certain authors does not guarantee liking or dis-liking Malazan, so I would say give it a shot. I've read through book seven, and I think I'll finish it eventually but I'm not in any hurry. Are you feeling like learning to play piano, sculpting ice statue masterpieces, making everyone happy and wooing again, successfully, the woman of your dreams? These threads are more like Phil's toaster in the tub, swan dive off the bell tower, stepping in front of traffic phase. Migey
From the sound of it, il give books 1 and 2 a shot, but il probably wait for a bit longer. I've got a few other books that are more highly recomended by some of you guys and il finish those first. Or who knows. Mabye il cut postatge costs and order book 1 and 2 with my copy of Way of Kings.Sorry about not using search function, but as i said, it was broken at the time :S
Roland_85
Oh yeah, Migey, in case you are not up to date, there is a guy here, goes by the name of Gormenghast, who tends to defend the Malazan series by any threat - real or perceived - despite the fact that he is not even halfway through with the series. The guy could get pretty annoying, and as a result, people on this board tend to really hate the books. Bear that in mind ;)
Werthead
Are you feeling like learning to play piano, sculpting ice statue masterpieces, making everyone happy and wooing again, successfully, the woman of your dreams? No. I am, however, feeling like learning to play the fiddle, unleashing ice glaciers across equatorial jungles, making everyone miserable for 300,000 years by questionably imprisoning an alien deity for no particular purpose and then heaping abuse upon abuse on every popular female character I have for no discernable reason other than to piss off my fanbase ;)
