[book spoilers] Cat & Jaimie

Recommended Posts

i think the most likely answer is that she is going to free him. but i'm going with she's cutting his hand off. if she's going to free him, why does she ask for a sword? she going to cut through his chains?

Probably for the same reason as in the books - to ask Jaime to swear a bunch of vows with a sword pressed against his chest.

i did not remember that. still going to be quite the trick to get the kingslayer out of this camp with half the men trying to kill him, instead of a nice quite dungeon in riverrun.

So will Cat release Jaimie? Seems odd as she doesn't know about Bran and Rickon yet?

Or will it actually be her cutting off his hand? Seems very unlikely as well.

I hope not (that Cat will release Jaime), but it looks like it. When that happens in the books, you could excuse her in part, because grief drove her mad. In the show, releasing Jaime will be pure selfish premeditated treason. It'll be impossible for people who like Cat defend her this time.

And I really hope Brienne won't cut off his hand. He would always hate her for that, realistically, but we know that's not what happens.

Eh.. Blaming her release of Jamie because of a "mad spell" does not really sit well with me. She was desperate, yes, but she also knew exactly what she was doing by having Brienne escort Jamie to King's Landing. Regardless of her knowledge of Bran and Rickon, she is still desperate to get her two girls back, and Cat knows that if Jamie dies at the hand of Robb's men, then her daughters are as good as dead. This probably seems to be her only available option.

As to how she plans on spiriting him away from the middle of that camp, your guess is as good as mine. They certainly cannot fight their way out.

I think it will be a huge diversion from the books if she cuts his hand, and not good one. When captured by the mummers, Brienne and Jaime come closer, he matures as a person, he cries, he's scared, he's honest in trying to help Brienne... All those would be incredible scenes. (THAPHIRES!!!! We can't possibly miss that!)

It would make no sense to have Cat or Brienne cut Jaime's hand off now. Cat's motivation for freeing Jaime is to get her daughters safely back, if she cuts the hostage's hand the whole deal kinda goes south. Not to mention that he would have a high chance of quickly dying of infection (like he almost does in the books). Besides Brienne would not agree with torturing/maiming prisoners like that, even if it's someone like the Kingslayer. If they have Cat cut his hand now they're basically screwing over 3 characters simultaneously. Even if I haven't liked all their changes I still don't think they would be that stupid.

If she does release him I hope they find a better way to do than the book. I hated the bran and rickon exscuse.

What would be a better way?

I think it would be absurdly stupid for it to happen any other way, because it is the only one that makes sense....I just tried to think of an example and no I can't think of a better reason for a mother to release the most dangerous enemy and man notoriously without honor with just a one woman guard to go all the way to KL and free her two daughters other than the fact that she just found out her two younger sons were brutally killed.

I think that she's going to release him, in the book happen when Robb is away from the encampment and when come back, is with a wife, in this case the nurse, and he is reported that the kingslayer has been release, i think that is going to be that way

Shit I think you may be right, I forgot he was at the Crag negotiating the surrender...so they might have gotten a raven with some grim news and Rob is consoled by the not so plain Jeyne Westerling

:agree: Her main reason in the books was she was desperate to get her daughter's back. That still holds in the show. I think it's been set up quite well as pretty much even Jaime believes that one of the drunk bannermen will kill him that night and Cat has done everything in her power to keep that from happening. If they get really drunk she won't be able to control them at all so she has to get Jaime out of there asap.

No way is she or Brienne going to be the one to cut off his hand. That would be too drastic a change to all their characters. Now if Cat had turned into Lady Stoneheart by this point then . . . .

The episode explained clearly why she would do it without needing to learn of her son's deaths.

Yep, if she doesnt get Jaime out of there now he will die, if he dies so do Sansa and Arya. Didnt really think of this until I read your post.

Yeah me too -- I kinda thought it was a given... It's set up to play out like the books (though differently). When he arrives back, Mom's let Jaime go, and he's got a new wife.

He's not going to lose his hand until next season. I think they'll add the Goat to the roster of characters then. Brienne and Jaime will leave next episode or the one after once Cat learns of the boys' "death." Then, early next season Rorge and Biter will capture him, cut off his hand and return him to Harrenhal. He'll meet with Roose- give Robb Stark my regards. Brienne and the Bear (and the fair maiden) and all that jazz and Jaime's redemption story begins.

hmmm I had originally thought when she took the sword her options were either nothing, cut hand or kill him and only realistic option would be cut off hand, but a 4th option exists as someone above wrote

make him swear on his honor to get her daughters back (that of course matches the book) and then release him.

Agree wiih both of these. Cat won't cut off Jaime's hand because she knows it would mean either the deaths of her daughters, or (more Lannister evil!) sending them back to her, but each minus a hand. Cat calling for Brienne's sword is straight from the chapter ending in ACOK, only readers were left wondering what happened until ASOS was published. Here in Series 2, we will probably get the vows and the escape, which of course are only seen in restrospect through Jaime's POV in ASOS.

In TV drama terms, the loss of Jaime's hand would be a fantastic cliffhanger ending to one of the Series 3 episodes, along the lines of Bran being tossed out the window - Jaime held down by the BMs, the sword flashing down, perhaps a scream from Brienne or Jaime ... and then viewers have to wait for a week to see what happens! I doubt that the producers will let that chance go begging, as it's pure TV gold.
