Game Of Thrones
What would Stannis do without a sorceress that kills people with magic, but with 3000 pro-Targaryen soldiers, 200 ships, and 2000 sellswords, in a small infertile island, with larger foes on all sides? I'm the Party Pooper
He would have lost to Renly long ago, and a Baratheon would sit the Iron Throne
Consigliere
IMO, If Mel did not exist it changes nothing. If Martin excluded Mel from the story and Stannis' role was more important than Renly's then Martin could have easily written that Stannis has a bigger army at his disposal eg. The Stormlands could have declared for him or The Reach does not declare for Renly.

What could Stannis do?

Ice Queen
Mel made him do the blood magic. And there is no Mel. So...how? Okay. He has no chance of taking the IT. Renly would have smashed him to bits and would be on the throne. Even with Mel his chances are slim to none.

illrede
Gone all-in with a strike at Kings Landing early in Book 2, take Joffrey, Cersei, Tommen, and Mrycella, then events become unpredictable.
Consigliere
Yeah, but say Planetos was real, and that Mel drowned in the Narrow Sea without ever reaching Dragonstone. What could Stannis do? He'd be fucked, I imagine. Or he could have answered Ned's summons and returned to KL. Then who knows how things might have turned out.
Sullen
Renly would have gotten the Throne, simple as that.
The Drunkard
Look for an alliance. He briefly considered one with Lysa in the ACOK prologue, but Selyse tweaked his pride and he ditched the idea. I imagine that without Melisandre, who's a double-whammy in that she's powerful, making him not desperate enough to ask for help, and an ego-booster, in that she made him her god's messiah, he would've been more open to negotiating with someone. Impossible to predict after that.

Winterfell is Burning
He probably would have contacted Ned because he would be his only possible ally. No telling what happens next. Even if he takes the Iron Throne, Varys won't allow him to keep it. He's sworn to kill anyone who dabbles in blood magic. People are really naive to believe that crap? Varys doesn't give a damn that Stannis uses blood magic, he's against Stannis because he doesn't want a strong ruler in the Iron Throne when Aegon arrives. JonCon's Red Beard
Stannis Baratheon? No way. He didn't have Mel telling him "you're the Magical Saviour!".
Bronn Urgandy
Dorne, the Vale and the Iron Islands are all undeclared at this stage. Even he knows he has no hope for the Iron Islands, but if he sails to or sends ravens to Dorne offering the promise of Tywin Lannisters head, and sends ravens to the Vale offering justice for Jon Arryn, then he'll probably still have no allies because of Doran and Lysa's attitudes. But I imagine they're his first moves. After that, then the only hope in hell he has is foreign aid, perhaps S4's Iron Bank storyline comes about, or Stannis makes a deal with a bunch of foreign merchants ala the 9penny Kings, ships, men and sellswords in exchange for a longterm payback option/positions of power/trade interests. Men in power always have options, because the world is full of greedy souls. No one is out until they're out, and Stannis compromises on his own stubborn ways when he must. Faint
He didn't have Mel telling him "you're the Magical Saviour!". Even so, that was the sensible course of action even when he had Melisandre. He was certainly not aware that she could assassinate his greatest foes even as they were guarded behind seemingly impregnable obstacles. Yet he still chose to confront Renly. Stannis has never been sensible when he believes he is in the right.
