I think so, yes. There are hints that intercourse "fertilizes" the shadow babies, and I'm also pretty sure that Melisandre has mentioned something about Davos volunteering his seed or some such thing.

And of course the line in ADWD that "without Stannis around, her bed had seen little use." Something to that effect.

I'm fairly certain at least the first time was non-con. But, yes, they've definitely had sex, and there isn't much arguing that. I don't think they're shagging every day, though - or even more than the two times that were required. I don't think it would really matter if they were, though, but still.

I actually don't think they are. There are ways to obtain a man's seed without actually doing the deed (thank you, Cersei, for your oh so graphic description of exactly how THAT can work). I realize there are some major hypocrisies in Stannis' view of himself, but I do not believe that ice cold asexual by day/flaming lover by night is one of them. And it would fit in so perfectly with my view of Mel for her to be obtaining men's ...um...essence without their knowledge or consent.

There is also the issue of Stannis truly seeming to believe himself completely innocent of having anything to do ith Renly's death. He is not a stupid man, and I think he would have put it together if he and Mel made hot sweaty love one night, he has a very vivid dream of Renly's death, and then finds out the next morning that Renly died in the night exactly as his dream saw it happen.

Davos would never consent to the use of his seed, but if Mel has found a way around that pesky little problem of consenting, then her abilities to use him for shadowbabies would be limited only by how much effect it has on the man involved (and it does seem to take a toll). Just a nice little sleeping powder mixed with some sort of aphrodisiac, slip into their room at night (not even necessary with Stannis), and hello, shadowbabyjuice. For all we know she may have been using men all over the place to maintain her glamours and powers, since they do seem to require some exertion and strength to maintain.

I actually don't think they are. Or at least not to the level we might think.

Basically I don't believe the shadowbabies are made from sperm, but more soul if anything. Still means they're probably doing some weird ritual.


edit: Actually, if they are doing any sexual act, I honestly think it's oral. I could totally see Stannis justifying that as not being sex, and I still feel Mel gets what she needs.

someone in the last post i posted at suggested that there might be sex scenes between Melisandre and Stannis in the show - based on a sex scene in the 2nd trailer. Had to have been Melisandre based on the red necklace i guess... but if it happens in the show - guys we have them fucking - AWESOME!!!

I think they had sex only as a means to conceive the shadow babies, and no other times. The only thing keeping me thinking they actually had sex and not just Mel getting some Jizz from a tissue in the trash can of Stannis's porno cellar is the comment she makes about her bed not seeing use since Stannis left.

Of course the bed comment could have an entirely different meaning. It could be that when she makes shadow babies it wears her down so bad she requires sleep afterward, and since Stannis is gone and she hasn't made more shadows, the power of her god alone is enough to keep her going without sleep. She would still need the seed though, so maybe Stannis really does have a porno cellar.

Stannis is always so serious...he deserves a break every once in a while. I sure hope she is helping him blow off steam from time to time. Haha. They're both human after all, and I doubt he has completely suppressed his sexual urges. If they both get something outta the time together, well power to them.

This. The shadow babies and bed references definitely suggest that something is going on, but I highly doubt that it is some steamy love affair. On the other hand, perhaps the frigid Stannis is intriguing to her. Opposites do attract.

Nothing about Melissandre's magic is easy or pleasant, in fact, it's pretty full of agony.

Stannis seems completely unable to experience sexual, or any other joy.

They are doing something in the boudoir together, but it's probably creepy and not much fun.

I'm going to turn on a spotlight right now and see if I can figure out how that's done. I'll let you know.

It's pretty much hinted throughout the series - the bed comment, Mel's offer to Davos, soldiers & nobles identifying Mel as Stannis's "real queen," the fact that Stannis specifically pulls away from Selyse when she flings her arms around his legs but doesn't draw away from Mel when she touches him, etc. I get a similar sense of textual implication as I did with Renly & Loras, and we all know how that one turned out.

It may seem out of character for Stannis, but given that this is Westeros, everyone has their failings and hypocrisies.

Yes, she is...and implies it in ADWD in her chapter. Admittedly I felt that she had bewitched him so to speak, but after the last book, I disagree. She does say that the Davos boy is I in love with her, so she does use seduction as a power in some way. She also says Jon will never fall in love with her either...I think Stannis uses her, you know like a marketing strategy for becoming a king. Product differentiation is key :-). They use each other...but I have not figured her out yet, but she does gross me out sometimes.

Plus the Queen is a political marriage and is the daughter Selise? I am with Val, that she is death on wheels.
