  1. I've had the misfortune of hearing about and from him on Real Time with Bill Maher. If you do want a non-embarrasing brown dude, cant go further than Ro Khanna though.
  2. When I was in the market for academic jobs before I decided to make the switch to industry, some of the better organized departments (and the ones where teaching was as important as research) would ask you to prepare a lecture from a course and teach it to undergraduates. It takes the guessing out, although I found it onerous to prepare both a research talk and a teaching lecture. It also made the visit extend over multiple days. I dont miss those days very much.
  3. The Onion just ran an article yesterday with this hilarious headline (paraphrasing) "Increasingly unhinged Nate Silver declares 39 has 83% chance of being 64"
  4. Folks, since I work in an area where capturing IP is quite important, and when filing it determining who needs be included in it is paramount, me and all my colleagues are pretty obsessive about documenting our ideas (including the genesis of it). It helps to have a built-in system that helps with this, but even e-mailing a colleague about your idea could be a good practice to follow (not that anyone here doesn't know this already...). In the worst case it would even help if you were to file against the employer for discrimination. tl; dr create paper trails. @Starkess are post-docs not an option? Hiring for them tends to be more flexible/informal and doesnt involve a rigorous selection process. Pay is meh (~50-60k), and of course it is more placing careers in holding patterns while you look for something more permanent. Still, you can do some cool science and get the monkey off your back for a bit.
  5. Some neurodivergent folks on Facebook forums I frequent have made this exact same point (and I think some include Data amongst their rolls as well)
  6. This is probably true, but there are some metrics by which Picard S3 has done extremely well. Two of these include a nearly 98% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and breaking into the Top 10 Nielsen's rating for original streaming series. The latter I think is a bit more impressive since it goes by millions of minutes watched and has 25 episodes listed, so it must include S1 and S2 as well. However, to keep this in perspective, the Mandalorian has 3X the number of minutes with 19 episodes. For me, I'm mainly watching for the nostalgia and am willing to overlook the plot point issues, but was hoping they could have come up with a better Bifg Bad than they did. Still, maybe the last episode will surprise us.
  7. Yeah its a shame they dont have it in Toronto (or anywhere near the Midwest like Chicago, for example). Anyway, Jeri Ryan just tweeted that she say Ep 9 for the first time a few hours ago, and its fire. Also cautioned everyone to stay as far away from spoilers (or indeed, any social media) as possible. Have to say, I have only watched ST in reruns, so its great to be a part of 'event TV' involving Star Trek, I imagine this is how watching Best of Both Worlds Part 2 felt like back in the day.
  8. Picard S3 season finale (last 2 episodes I think) are being aired in IMAX theaters in 10 locations for free, and you can score tickets by registering tomorrow at 1 PM EST. I dont live remotely near those locations, but some of youse lucky mooks may be able to wrangle something.
  9. Back in the day World Chess Championships were played in some pretty serious geopolitical context, psychology was a big part of the preparation and the 'offense', and everyone kept things pretty close to their chest. Any now Liren openly admitted he was feeling depressed (which I am sympathetic to) and 'weird' with the atmosphere. Not an indictment, but more a commentary of how things have changed.
  10. I am liking S3 Picard because there is a mystery at the heart of it (along with the 'realness' of the family drama(s), as well as the Shaw/Picard and Shaw/Seven dynamics, and various other stuff). And not a stupid mystery with hopefully not a stupid resolution like The Burn in Disco. Of course, the return of the TNG crew has added to my enjoyment (still a bit weirded out by many of them calling Picard 'Jean Luc'). Hope the last three episodes deliver.
  11. Vishy Anand used to live in Spain (not sure if he still does, but when he was more active for sure). He is quite fluent in Spanish from what I understand. In fact, when the University of Hyderabad tried to give him an honorary doctorate it was rejected because of 'confusion over his citizenship' (yes its weird, but also ... India)
  12. Hmm....our company has a performance award structure that is pretty transparent, based on individual performance (that doesnt vary a lot amongst employees) and company performance that you can track per quarter. By Q4 2022 I had a pretty good idea what it would be. I'm surprised the financial sector has a more volatile PA system (although to be fair its only ~12% of my income, and what I do has minimal impact on the company bottom line)
  13. Would I rather be an OG racist, or a clueless naif who probably knew about the OG racists-in-law but went ahead with the marriage anyway. What a tough question to ponder.
  14. This ended up being wrong, I think today's storm was about as bad as last week. We also had that rarest of rare events, thundersnow: Thundersnow - Wikipedia
  15. Monday and Tuesday reach up to ~40F here in Michigan, so I'm guessing its mostly local (and if you are in Alaska there is the whole of Canada as a buffer till it reaches us up here in the frozen north of US). At any rate, we had our big storm yesterday and overnight. School was closed these two days, but the roads have improved significantly. I'd say about 6-8" where I live, a bit more in Northern Michigan and the UP, and a icy/smowy mix south of us. A big mess, but I think this is the last of the 'tough' winter weather for us with mostly smaller storms past this point.
  16. Mostly oxidation of the fatty acids present in the oils, accelerated by the high temperature. The degree of unsaturation of the oil can also affect the oxidation (more C=C bonds implies faster oxidation, so the time of cooking is also important). I dont know what the health effects of the degradation products are though, and what levels they reach on multiple heat cycles.
  17. [obligatory Thomas Edison diss here]. Another option you might want to consider is one of those 'popular science' magazines that have a bit more focus on the technical aspects of science rather than the breathless sound bites regular news magazines have. I am thinking something like Quanta or Ars Technica, although I've been a bit disappointed with the former in recent times (for instance, that whole 'wormhole in a lab' debacle). Maybe what they need is more rigor in their scientific reporting.... I wouldnt discount industrial jobs either, you can still do a lot of cool science and some fundamental work on the side with necessary. Some companies collaborate with universities closely, if you still want to step away from applied stuff once in a while.
  18. You can tell Harry is lying because Meghan would have said "colorful"
  19. I've watched her career post-US Open win with some sort of horrified fascination, it did seem at the time that she was given impossible expectations to live up to, but simultaneously, it also seems she is being led astray by those around her (the constant rotation of coaches as well as seemingly avoidable injuries). Conversely, I think Gauff has been pretty consistent in her career, but hasn't won a Slam yet. I hope this is her chance. Would be a nice passing of the torch from Serena to her when it comes to US women's tennis.
  20. Yes, the Australian Open is currently happening lol - seems like a low-key affair though with quite a few no-shows and retirements. Today's news was Nadal and Raducanu out. I dont know what has happened with the latter but it appears as if she has frittered away her shining start (injuries galore for instance). I dont know who on her team is to blame, since some of this is avoidable (like blisters on the hand etc.)
  21. I know this is an old post, but just wanted to note that I started purchasing Series I bonds last year (a modest start with $50 per paycheck) based mostly on this recommendation. Since its partially pegged to inflation it isnt a bad choice at all (now up to 9% return I believe). On a side note I also have an American Express savings account tethered to market rates that also offers about ~3.3% interest right now that is better than what my primary and local credit union banks are offering. Unfortunately, my 401k doesnt have the option for Series I so no employee match...meh, whatever. Apart from that I havent messed with my investments much and the 401k is pretty much untouched.
  22. Speaking of weather, today is Perihelion Day, showing you how much more important tilt of the earth's axis is compared to distance from the sun.
  23. I'm pretty sure one of the teenage clueless gearheads on my FB feed posted a video from Tate showing him trashing EVs (all half-baked unscientific gibberish of course), so its a bit weird how the universe works.
