Ser Cold Fingers
Noticed. Unfortunately, that's also how we call the planet we live on. Extinction events happen. Continents move. I've seen some oily black rocks on my place in the country. I know GRRM says this is not our planet...but its fun to discuss.

Lord Flashheart
There seems to be a ton of new borders in this thread. So I'll assume you weren't here when it was decided planetos was incredibly lame. We settled that GRRth was and is the only proper name. So yeah. GRRth. Lord Flashheart
Yea, I have always liked GRRth -- brings to mind Martin's prodigious girth. This is a common misconception. GRRth doesn't have any correlation with GRRM's weight. It's just a combination of GRRM and earth.

RumHam
I'm against any sorta fan name, but I have a question. I know Essos did not appear in a novel until Dance. Is that a case of a fan name being canonized? Or just a detail that didn't make it into the series or Dunk & Egg stories until then?

OK, maybe not in the text proper, but I could swear I saw it long before ADWD on one of maps in the books.

Yeah I think it was out there before ADWD that's why I was asking if it was fan made. Search the books. It doesn't even appear in the Dunk & Eggs. They're always saying things like "across the sea." Edit: To clarify, it doesn't even appear in the text proper of Dance. Only in the appendix and map title. Unless I'm mistaken the first in-universe mention is in The Princess and The Queen: In the waning days of 129 AC, the young princes boarded the cog Gay Abandon—Aegon with Stormcloud, Viserys clutching his egg—to set sail for Essos. The Sea Snake sent seven of his warships with them as escort, to see that they reached Pentos safely.

Mikkel
It's just "the world". If you need to distinguish it from the real world, you can do it... well, like that. Or use "our world" vs "their world" or "the world of ASOIAF". Or be more specific and refer to "Westeros", "Essos" or whatever is applicable. Planetos is terrible and will forever be terrible. So many options without needing to invent a name for something that doesn't seem to have one.

There is nothing in the SSMs. The first mention is from 2008, before Dance, kinda clarified in the article. Older mentions in interviews (1999, around those dates) call it the other continent or something similar.
