Pronunciation thread

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there will be a thousand threads about the pronunciation of characters names, but I thought I'd make the one thousand and one.

So if anyone can tell me, I was wondering how to pronounce Tyrell, Aegon and Myrcella (is it just Marcella?).

And Petyr. Is it Peter or Pee-Tie-R?

Tie-rell

Ay-gon

Mer-sella

Pee-ter

How do others pronounce "Cerwyn"? I have usually used a soft c (ala Cersei, so it sounds like Serwyn of the Mirror Shield), but the show used a hard c (Kerwyn).

I would say the soft Cee. Its what I always pronounced it as. Serwyn the same way, they're just spelled differently.

Personally I prefer:

Tyrell: Tirrel, to rhyme with squirrel. It reminds me of that line in the poem the "Lady of Shalott" Tirra Lirra by the river/Sand Sir Lancelot. Probably due to the Tyrells' association with chivalry and beauty.

Aegon: My first instinct when seeing the word would be "Eye-gon" same with "Die-neris" due to Ae always being pronounced like "eye" in Tolkien's writings.

Myrcella= Marcella

Petyr= Peter

Of course the show ruined the first two pronunciations for me.

YUS!

;)

As with Yronwood and Petyr and stuff like that. Remember that in the real life world there was no unified way of spelling so people often spelled words creatively. So I always assumed that things like Yronwood, Petyr, Myrcella, Jaime and such, were just Ironwood, Peter, Marcella and Jamie as spelled by people who had no idea how to spell Ironwood, Peter Marcella and Jamie or just thought that the letter Y was really really neat.

One name that causes troubles to me is Melisandre.

Melisandree?

Melisander?

Melisaand? (kinda French)

Melisandreh?
