Cladinator Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I'm sure there will be a thousand threads about the pronunciation of characters names, but I thought I'd make the one thousand and one.So if anyone can tell me, I was wondering how to pronounce Tyrell, Aegon and Myrcella (is it just Marcella?).And Petyr. Is it Peter or Pee-Tie-R? Tie-rell Ay-gon Mer-sella Pee-ter Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I always figured Ray-neese. Me too. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Lads what about Yronwood? Not a clue I try to just say it phonetically but it doesn't read well and I have to pause and say it like everytime I come across it Well you could try Yi, like Ygritte. Also Year-onwood. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 How do others pronounce "Cerwyn"? I have usually used a soft c (ala Cersei, so it sounds like Serwyn of the Mirror Shield), but the show used a hard c (Kerwyn). I would say the soft Cee. Its what I always pronounced it as. Serwyn the same way, they're just spelled differently. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Anyone know how to say Rhaenys? An odd one, but still. Rain-ease. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lady Blackmont Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I believe Elio and Linda pronounce it Kerwyn. Ned though, that's a hard one. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
cyberdirectorfreedom Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I always pronounced Rhaenys as Ray-en-iss. Though I'm now no longer sure why; it's not like I pronounce Rhaegar as Ray-egg-arr. Hm. R'hllor I pronounce as Ruh-lore. Cerwyn I pronounce with a soft c. Yronwood is just Ironwood. I pronounce Myrcella with the Myr rhyming with here. Pea-Tear Baelish. Tyrell_like_Squirrel Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Personally I prefer: Tyrell: Tirrel, to rhyme with squirrel. It reminds me of that line in the poem the "Lady of Shalott" Tirra Lirra by the river/Sand Sir Lancelot. Probably due to the Tyrells' association with chivalry and beauty. Aegon: My first instinct when seeing the word would be "Eye-gon" same with "Die-neris" due to Ae always being pronounced like "eye" in Tolkien's writings. Myrcella= Marcella Petyr= Peter Of course the show ruined the first two pronunciations for me. YUS! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Orphalesion Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 YUS! ;) As with Yronwood and Petyr and stuff like that. Remember that in the real life world there was no unified way of spelling so people often spelled words creatively. So I always assumed that things like Yronwood, Petyr, Myrcella, Jaime and such, were just Ironwood, Peter, Marcella and Jamie as spelled by people who had no idea how to spell Ironwood, Peter Marcella and Jamie or just thought that the letter Y was really really neat. One name that causes troubles to me is Melisandre. Melisandree? Melisander? Melisaand? (kinda French) Melisandreh? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Fat Mac Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 It's probably not correct, and it may be a bit stupid, but I always pronounce Yronwood as Eeron-wood rather than Iron-Wood. I don't know why. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Balerion the kitten Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Love seeing how differently we all pronounce thingsYeah. An amazing one is daenerys. A lot of unsullied seem to think it's pronounced as khaleesi Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Bael's Bastard Posted July 2, 2015 Share Posted July 2, 2015 Lol. But seriously, Daenerys is one I pronounce differently than I think I should. Based on spelling I think I should pronounce it Dayne+heiress, but I tend to pronounce it Din (like dim) + heiress. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
