What if Ned Died During the Rebellion

Corvo the Crow

Recommended Posts

Since there's a recent surge of many what if scenarios...

What would happen if Ned dies during Rebellion, say while crossing the Bite or in battle of bells?

Would Benjen marry Cat?

Who'll be the Stark in Winterfell? A distant branch perhaps?

What lies(or truths) will Benjen tell regarding Jon's parentage?

What name will he give to Jon?

Would he take the Iron Throne?

Would he send Jaime to NW?

Would Ashara still jump from Palestone Sword?

Would Ned Dayne be named Benfred Dayne and nicknamed Ben in honor of Benjen?

Ask the author. It is his story after all and he would know

There is a distinct possibility Ned's death might directly or indirectly cost the rebelles the war. Robert seems like he would completely lose his mind if Ned died.

Maybe, seems more likely if Ned died before he married her to secure the Tullys loyalty.

He could say that "Jon" was Ned's or more probably Brandon's bastard if he didn't think claiming "Jon" himself was a plausible story.

Eddard, Rickard, Brandon or some variation of those seems like probable candidates but we don't know a lot about Benjen so it is hard to say.

No, he any lacks backers aside from maybe Hoster Tully. Robert might have been fine with Ned taking the throne but Ned's kid brother not so much.

Maybe not, if Ned killing Arthur really did drive Ashara to despair. I don't think we know enough to say what really happened there.

Don't think so. Ned had some sort of previous history with the Daynes, Benjen not so much.

You usually answer "Story would continue" or "There wouldn't be any story" to these kind of threads. Should I feel like a special snow flake because of your different answer or did your style change in general?

If Ned dies, Jon never goes to Winterfell.

If he dies before he calls the banners, then that means Benjen is the last living male. Maybe he decides that it's more important to continue the Stark line than rise in rebellion.

If he dies after his marriage to Catelyn, then Robb exists, so I imagine she acts as regent for him or Benjen does that until he reaches his majority.

Maybe,  or maybe old Walder would taste trout meat.

Benjen, if Cat isn't impregnanted.

I don't think that Ben would go south.

Too hard to tell but I imagine the north would continue but some other lord would be put in charge of the northern host rather than await for the young Benjen to travel south.  Benjen would have been younger than Robb was.

If Ned died before the double marriage and Hoster joining the rebellion it may call into doubt which side Hoster would join, but I presume he would have and he would have expected Benjen to marry his daughter.

Though Cat was a couple of years older than Benjen, the marriages may have been switched.

Likely Benjen.

Benjen is not Ned, even if he was sent South to join the war it is unlikely that he would be in the same position of power, it would be someone else in charge of advancing to Kings Landing, someone else tasked with relieving Storm's End.

I think it is unlikely that he ever goes to the Tower of Joy.

He was younger than Robb, so no, not a chance.

Ned was like a brother and son to Jon and Robert and he did not have the influence to be able to send Jaime away, Benjen, even if actually cared as much as Ned did, is going to have even less of a say in the matter.

Impossible to say as we really don't know why she did it.

No.

What would happen if Ned dies during Rebellion, say while crossing the Bite or in battle of bells?  Nothing, he just dies.

Would Benjen marry Cat?  Yes

Who'll be the Stark in Winterfell? A distant branch perhaps?  Benjen+Cat=children

What lies(or truths) will Benjen tell regarding Jon's parentage?  Nothing to tell.  Lyanna got preggers with Brandon.  He will keep that to himself.

What name will he give to Jon?  Jon

Would he take the Iron Throne?  No.  No Stark has a right to the throne.  People would not stand for it.  Jon is a product of two Starks.

Would he send Jaime to NW?  No

Would Ashara still jump from Palestone Sword?  Sure

Would Ned Dayne be named Benfred Dayne and nicknamed Ben in honor of Benjen?  No, still Ned

It must be remembered that Benjen was 13-14 during the Rebellion. So in the extremely unlikely case that he had joined the Northern army, surely he wouldn't have been entrusted to run to King's Landing, lift the siege of Storm's End, or find Lyanna.

That seems like pretty much the cusp of being considered an adult in Westeros so he might have tagged along but he wouldn't be leading troops. He is to young for that and neither Robert nor Jon Arryn would have any reason to trust him the way they did Ned.
