Why didn't Robb try to make peace after the Blackwater?

Recommended Posts

So after the Blackwater it was clear Robb was screwed. He was trapped in the Riverlands soon to witness the power of the fully armed and operational Tyrell-Lannister alliance which outnumbered him at least 3 to 1, but probably way more. So didn't he tried to sue for peace? Especially with Jaime gone. Surely he must have realized he was doomed at that point

I assume that Robb disagreed. After all Dustins, Manderlys, Ryswells and clans in NW part of the North should have enough men left that with their help he could have kicked Ironborn out of the North and so secured his core areas against possible invasion from the south. Naturally he would have lost Riverlands but he could keep fighting against Iron Throne.

Who knows what Tywin would’ve demanded. Robb doesnt hold winterfell his heirs are dead and his army’s are trapped in the riverlands. Tywin would give him the option to submit to the kings justice or die fighting.

It made sense to retake his homelands and bring some sort of legitimacy to his reign. And if the tyrell-Lannister armies haven’t invaded the riverlands yet he could sue for peace on better terms.

But whilst robb holds the riverlands their will be no peace. So he will be forced to March back south to battle the combined might of tyrell-Lannister.
Or maybe his plan was to abandon the riverlands to its fate, but I don’t know since we never got a POV. If he abandoned the riverlands and consolidated his hold on the north. He could sue for peace on favourable terms.

Robb was indeed doomed at this point. He had nothing left to bargain with.  Peace was not enough, he had men, a pregnant wife, honour, etc. weighing his options down on his courses of action and he needed to take something from his enemies to trade for their freedom. His options were to give up the fight and turn himself (and his high lords) over to the crown where they'd absolutely be executed brutally and publicly (they already knew how Joffrey hands out justice), then the Starks would be stripped of Winterfell (which as you said they didn't own), since they were a family of traitors from the crown's perspective. If they were allowed to keep their place as warden of the north however unlikely, would their banner men maintain allegiance after losing so much (look at the state of them already with fractures with the Karstarks, Freys, and more.

I think Robb had no choice but to fight on until the bitter end no matter how hopeless it seemed.  He was his father's son and until he gained some sort of leverage, it's all he could do.

Tywin showed what he had planned for House Stark. Robb would never have been allowed to keep his crown. He would have put his own son in Winterfell with Sansa at his side. Whether that child took the name Stark or Lannister is another matter, but given what happened with Derry, I'm fairly certain that House Stark's name would have been extinguished. Tywin's ambition really was extraordinary if he thought the North would have accepted that, though. So maybe he was hoping Tyrion would die?

Ah yes, I remember when Darth Vader told Princess Leia that she and the Rebel Alliance were “screwed.“

He was desperate and knew it.  That was the only reason he wanted to make friends with Old Walder again.  He backed himself into corner when he claimed a separate north.  That is not going to be taken positively by anybody who isn't a north man.
