Why was Mace Tyrrell allowed to keep most of Reach troops sieging Storm End by Rhaegar Targaryen instead of using them to reinforce the royal army at the trident  or firm reserve army should the royal army lose at trident and leaving just enough troops to keep siege of Storm end?

In a system where individuals have direct control over huge numbers of troops sometimes it's better not to poke the tiger.

Basically this. The Targaryens had no surety on the Tyrells so they could basically contribute on their own therms. Mace keeping the bulk of his forces tied up in besieging Storm's End was actually a shrewd move. If the loyalists won, he would've been part of the victory and entitled to the spoils. As it happened, he just dipped his banners and called it a day. Regardless of the outcome he took minimal casualties compared to the other belligerents in the rebellion.

I was thinking the other way.

Mace promised his king hed capture Storms End and now some teenager is holding out? If he leaves Tarly to capture SE while he reinforces Rhaegar that could turn ugly.  While staying in SE and allowing Tarly to be the hero of thr Trident also comes with problems.

The decedent of Garth with the heroes blade upstaged Mace once this war. I think thats enough, thank you

People keep giving Mace far too much credit and far too little at the same time.

He was in the Stormlands and in Storm's End because as Robb's fall shows the best way to break a rebel is to break his powerbase. Martin outright states that had Storm's End had fallen it would've been game over for Robert. Taking Storm's End was actually a pretty urgent task.

And Martin has also stated that it wouldn't have mattered one bit what Mace stance was when Ned arrived... because his vassals wouldn't have followed him.

There's a reason no one ever doubts Mace's allegiance during the Robellion.
