PyroclasticFlow
Some news from last night, Jeff Passan reporting that the Cards have decided to part ways with Mike Shildt, with team prez John Mozeliak saying the firing was over a “philosophical difference” in the direction of the team. Seems bittersweet given the season they just had with their final push to make it to the WC game. Wondering what @Argonath Diver’s thoughts are on this, given the coming of age that O’Neill and Carlson had this year.

That was a check swing in a million other multiverses. Quote The awful check swing call against Wilmer Flores for the final out of Game 5 of the Giants–Dodgers series was a brutal way for San Francisco’s season to end, but the two teams might not have even gotten to a Game 5 if not for another terrible check swing call earlier in the season. Way back on July 22, the Giants and Dodgers faced off in the finale of a four-game series at Chavez Ravine. San Francisco had won two of the first three games to maintain its slim lead over Los Angeles in the NL West standings. And the Dodgers came within one strike of salvaging a series split. https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2021/10/15/dodgers-giants-wilmer-flores-darin-ruf-check-swing Quote Let’s face it Dodger fans, the checked swing call on Wilmer Flores to end Game 5 of the Dodgers-Giants division series was a bad call. Flores did not swing and the game should have continued. Max Scherzer probably would have gotten him out anyway, we’ll never know. And 20 years from now, no one will care except for the Giants and some of their fans. However, Dodgers fans will also be quick to point out a horrible check swing call earlier this season that cost the Dodgers a game against the Giants. A call, that if called correctly, would have given the Dodgers the win. Meaning the Dodgers could have won the NL West by a game and not the Giants. Meaning Game 5 would have been at Dodger Stadium, and who know what would have happened if all that played out? https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2021-10-14/giants-dodgers-checked-swing-call

Wondering what @Argonath Diver’s thoughts are on this, given the coming of age that O’Neill and Carlson had this year. Apologies for the coming ramble, this Shildt is bananas and will be discussed in Redbirdland for years. Every Cardinals fan is as shocked as Shildt was when he got the phone call. Here are some ironclad facts: -Shildt has been a part of the organization for 18 years, and has been respected at every level. He had the lowest pay of any MLB manager, and was up for an extension, though reports have stated that no extension was discussed during the season. -He was fired over the phone. Mozeliak confirmed that their issues only arose in the past week, apparently over heated discussions in their in-person exit interviews. -Jeff Albert is the hitting coach for the entire organization, and his systems are in place at every level. Though it's not entirely clear just what his philosophy is, everyone seems to agree that his extreme focus on analytics shows that he has pushed Cardinal hitters toward the Three True Outcomes (strike walk or dinger) through focus on pitch selection and launch angle. We can definitely see that in O'Neil and Bader's for-the-fences swings, and with Carpenter's severe uppercut swing into the shift that worked swimmingly in 2018 but ended his career this year. -The Cardinals prior to this firing had voiced confidence in retaining its coaching staff for 2022, specifically with Albert still having a lot of power. -Mozeliak stated that he wants to hire a new manager by mid November, which very likely means yet another internal hire. Rumored names are Oli Marmol, our bench coach, Stubby Clapp, our lovable tiny 1st base coach, and even Skip Schumaker who's well-respected over with the Padres. There is a ton of speculation going around while Mozeliak continutes to speak in his bullshit platitudes and Shildt declines to comment (presumably so his head doesn't explode with fury). One trusted poster on another forum has a in-house contact that insists the feud escalated over contract discussions - ie Shildt wanted to be paid based on his success, and Mo lowballed him and/or threatened to replace him in-house. Another similar internet person who says they know people said the dispute was over Albert's philosophy. Shildt is open to analytics but is definitely more of a players' manager, old-school clubhouse kind of guy. Mozeliak seems to hold Albert in very high regard, which is a bit baffling as our offense has performed under expectations every year since he was hired (other than the nice 17 win streak I got to attend the culmination of). Whether it was money or a power struggle between coach and manager, I expect more details to come out. DeWitt Jr had to seek special permission from Manfred, as managerial firings are not supposed to be announced on a playoff game day and Dodgers/Giants is probably the last amazing game of the post-season. Fuckin wild days.
PyroclasticFlow
@kairparavel that’s insane, the check swing call from mid season. Still, I’m 99.99% sure Mad Max would’ve struck Flores out to end last night’s game. @Argonath Diver could see STL make an offer to Schumaker, given his coaching acumen and the connection to the 2011 championship team.
