Poor Things also won its Best Picture category. Although it did not win direction or screenplay or score, so Oppenheimer was clearly favored there.

Exactly... We will see how guilds - PGA, DGA, WGA and SAG award each of these movies, but I think it is clear that OPPENHEIMER is clearly a favorite.

I really liked Lily Gladstone's performance, but I  don't think there's a strong argument to be made that Gladstone should win because her performance is more impressive than Stone's.

I didn't exactly understand this.

I still haven't seen POOR THINGS, so I don't exactly know how impressive is Stone. That said, from what I hear, Stone has Oscar-worthy performance. In my book, Lily is superb, but I wish Sandra Huller takes the main prize. However, I know that foreign actresses (in foreign movies) rarely bode well with Oscars.

Lily has the Oscar-winning performance despite it being borderline Supporting. She is incredibly eloquent, people really like her and Scorsese and Di Caprio are using their stardom to support her. All her competition, save perhaps Stone, have more going against them, than for them. I wouldn't mind Lily winning, especially since I know Huller can't win.

I don't what you don't understand there. I wouldn't mind Lily winning, but If I was to vote, I'd vote for Emma because her performance is great. - and she carries the movie. The only thing that goes "against" her is that she's won before.

I haven't seen Anatomy of the Fall or Maestro, so I can't compare them to Sandra Huller or Carey Mulligan.

I like most of and agree with the majority of their picks. The ceremony itself however, was a very mixed bag. but that's generally my feeling about award shows.

Exactly what you explained. Probably just me, but I thought it was strangely worded. Never mind...

The argumentation "she has won before" generally isn't strong if Academy wants to award someone. That is how we got Frances McDormand having three. However, if Academy wants to award someone else, it can be a reasoning not to award someone. We have heard this last year, when most anonymous ballots mentioned that Blanchett has already two Oscars.

Emma doesn't have anything "against" her. Yes, she is young and there may be those believing that it is too early for second Lead Actress Oscar, especially since her first hasn't aged very well (many believe Huppert or Portman should have won, not to mention snubbed from nomination, Amy Adams). Also, Lily making history and 2023 was 50-year anniversary from the infamous Marlon Brando rejection of the Oscar and Sacheen Littlefeather appearance at the stage may be the factor. There is a passion behind Lily, a visible passion, something neither Emma nor anyone else in the contention currently has.

Yeah, it is rather great set of winners. Ceremony was blah, though.

So, I guess they just don't care for May December or Past Lives or any non-English language movies, kinda forgot about Di Caprio and dislike Mark Ruffalo, and  thinkt hat the cast of Barbie is overall better than the cast of Poor Things (or just hate Ruffalo that much)?

There is a joke that they had to find a way to nominate Helen Mirren so instead of doing it in Lead Actress, they chose BARBIE (yeah, she is credited there) :D

They have really dropped the ball with these nominations. I don't mind different award bodies doing their own thing, but SAG-Aftra really did dirty several films and performances. Naturally, I didn't expect to see Huller or Lee nominated here, because I can't remember when a non-English performance of a foreign actress was nominated (not even Isabelle Huppert). Di Caprio and Ruffalo are quite shocking, especially since KOTFM made the cast. The one that hurts the most is Charles Melton. And honestly, I thought SALTBURN would do well with this crowd.

Then they nominated Penelope Cruz, one truly inspiring choice. Still haven't seen FERRARI, but from what I hear, she deserves all the awards for that performance. Known as someone who usually misses precursors but appear on Oscar morning, Cruz should not be dismissed.

If you know what this means, you know how hilariously epic it would be to see ORIGIN, Ava DuVernay or any of the actors, like Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor nominated. :D

Maybe they're not ready for that level of controversy.

CCA deciding to give us races in Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress is certainly an inspiring choice. I really thought we would see 4 acting sweeps, and now Emma Stone and Paul Giamatti gave us a race. Despite OPPENHEIMER going so strong, Paul can win an Oscar. And I wouldn't mind that. He is absolutely glorious in THE HOLDOVERS.
