Sounded like he might have been having trouble finishing up just one or two specific things even though the rest of the story is all but written. I was actually surprised that he revealed it at a reading. I just read the spoiler. Wow, it isn't any small extra who dies at all. The death is VERY satisfying indeed - I'm happy to read a discussion of the chapter if you guys are going to start a thread on it. Maybe you already have; I'll go check the ADWD subforum now. The volume is called The Best Military Science Fiction of the 20th Century and the story is 'Night of the Vampyres.' Just so you know, when I asked GRRM to sign it, he cringed and told me that it was one of those stories where the editor gives you the subject and you write on that.
