New Bakker cover art from Overlook Press:

These new editions are coming out in september. Perhaps the US cover art for The Judging Eye will be something similiar.

I don't really like the Morgan coverart...I do like the new Bakker ones, though; much more than the US paperback covers with the guy on them.
The new Bakker ones resemble medieval art of battles, particularly of the Crusades. Interesting, no? :D
As far as art goes, the only difference between the Cat Stevens and new ones is the maturing face missing. All 3 books had the bottom image refocused and moved up to the center.

When I made my Goodkind/Bakker parody cover I realized how loud the multiple texts are. I approve of the changes, moving Bakker's name above and removing some of the noise from behind the book title/blurb.

I like the old trade pb covers but I'm sure the 3 new ones will be more mainstream marketable.

True, they are the old paperbacks' cities moved up and out in prominence, but I think that heightens the effect, not to mention the style again is quite similar to that of medieval battle art, which is quite fitting for the setting of the trilogy.

The new Clarkesworld Magazine cover might be one of my all-time favorites.

The US cover for The Steel Remain has just terrible font, but this is nothing new for you across the pond ;)

I agree with what you said about Bakker; the covers are ok - not great, but ok - and they look 100% alt.history and that means a wider more mainstream market =).

Now the cover for Clarkesworld is just out-of-this world great! Tnx Larry for this; it's definitely being used for my next eyecandy cover article :)

I LOVE Whelan. Also, the dude who's done some of SE's work...Todd...something, I think.

Uh. Keep in mind that I never got much unto his first book, but seeing as that all looks like artistry of the Crusades, that feels to me like someone shouting 'Look at what Bakker ripped off of! See! It's right on the cover!' Honestly bad timing on my part to try his series right after covering that part of history in class and watching a documentary on the 1st Crusade. I felt like I was reading the documentary's transcript.

On topic, I happen to love fantasy art, at least that of it that's tasteful and a bit more...realistic? I'm thinking of Valejo here. Don't like that crap. But I do like a lot of fantasy art, and I don't mind being honest about what I'm reading, so I'm ok with colorful covers on my books.

Recently Bakker has said that he used the First Crusade on purpose, he wanted to write novels about belief (and how people can be manipulated through their beliefs) and he decided to use historical examples to make sure that the reader knew that he was not making that part up, that people can do terrible and amazing things moved just by their beliefs. He explained that if he had invented the story readers would have thought that it was just something invented by the writer.

It would seem that they are trying to reinforce this notion in with these new cover art.

I liked the original Prince of Nothing art (Canadia paperbacks and US hardcovers).

I wanted to write Canadian, it's a typo but now that I think about this I like this name better. It has some fantasy feel about it.

"Once upon a time in the lands of Canadia, home of the great Gnosis wielding neuropathic philosopher Bakker and the not less great Pat the Blogger, someone discovered that they had been living just north of a place called America..."

Yes, it sounds perfect. Someone should inform the Canadians that their country is no longer called Canada. And the Worldcon next year is in Canadia, how fitting.

The upcoming paperback edition of Gilman's Thunderer has new cover art. I think this is much better than the old one.

Gollancz is re-releasing Stephen Donaldson's Gap Series next month. Here are the new UK cover images:
Since it's somewhat related, I invite everyone to vote for their favorite SFF artist in this week's poll on the blog. :)

Patrick

Shouldn't there be samples of all the artists in the poll... or links?
