Prejudice against Geeks/Nerds

I'd happily fuck with you.

And as much posturing as Stego does, i guarantee that during his time in Corps he was fucked with by somebody. Whether or not it was due to his geek leanings he was still fucked with.

Of course I was fucked with as a boot. What the fuck does that have to do with the topic at hand? What does it have to do with me being a geek?

Also, your pic of two lovers in a passionate embrace on your facebook is not intimidating. Most of us here are pretty open-minded about that sort of thing.

ETA: Also, I don't posture. This is me, love me or hate me. :D

I, like Stego, was in the U.S. military for a good while. 8 years to be exact. While I was in I probably played more D & D than when I was in college. I played it when I was stationed at West Point, then Korea, and then two separate times in San Antonio. I was also a construction worker as well as working in oil refineries. I read mainly SF/F and the only time I get shit is because I "READ" to begin with. I've seen more Geek/Nerd in blue collar classes than any other really.

Ha, and see, i've been fucked with, but not about my reading habits. More likely due to me being a dick than me being a geek.

Good, then nobody gets fucked with for their nerdy reading habits, even blue collar guys. Since you've decided to reverse your original position, I believe we can just declare the thread over. :)

Ha, ya i went to a cowboy wedding this weekend (no shit, they had the bride come in on a fucking horse and their dog was the ring bearer). they had a photo spot set up for Prom like pictures. Some of the FF i worked with thought it'd be funny to snap some shots along those lines.

Wasn't really the intention to be intimidating.. not really something i shoot for on the internet.

I guess i could always jack some pics off of a muscle and fitness or animal ad and make it my avatar on the page.. that might scare some people.

Well, i must be way off the mark, or i've met every exception to the rule on this board. Maybe it's a little of both. Consider me beat.

Dude is mad prettier than me. But it's not like I put that shit up on facebook. Avatars are not pictures of yourself, by definition.

If you were a real geek, you'd know that shit. :D

I will say this though, I was in the service from 1985 to 1993 and there weren't many video games at the time. Sure, I had an Amiga and a few other people had computers, but the NES was just barely out and it was a "kid's" machine at the time. So a lot of the time that D & D groups got started was out of sheer boredom. The exception was West Point. I was actively recruited by my Captain when she found out I had played in college. Yes, I said she, I was a Combat Medic my first 2 years. There was even a con on the base called Point Con. All of the officers there went because of all of the strategy gaming at it.

Ha, i played rugby with an army choad that went to West Point.

So you talk shit about Army. And Marines never say they were in the military. They say they were in the Marines.

So you're a squid or a member of the Air Farce and you're talking shit about geeks? Get the fuck out of here.

Hell ya i was in the Air Force. I scored to high an my ASVAB to be in the Army and wasn't insecure enough to join the Marines.

Saying that though, i was a Fire Fighter in the AF, not really a traditional AF job. Sure, not a ground pounder (although i doubt you were either), but not a chair jockey either.

I'm not sure that I understand what it means to be fucked with wrt having some geeky interests. Someone makes a joke or something? I doubt even the biggest meatheads are gonna try to physically beat me up because I like a book, and I'm pretty sure I can take a joke or two.

Outside of the handful of boarders that I know in real life only one or two of my 'RL' friends are into reading at all... let alone reading SF/F. So yea one of my buddies might see me reading a SFF book and make a comment, I tell them to go fuck themselves.. and thats pretty much the extent of it. I'm not going to be beat up or ostracized from friends, acquaintances, or coworkers with whom I have a myriad of other common interests because I've got a few fantasy novels on my bookshelf. Thats ridiculous.

Life is not an 80's movie where oiled-up muscle bound bullies go around kicking sand in your face for reading fantasy books. Even in the 'tough guy' occupations mentioned in this thread, FF, PD, Military, etc... I'm having trouble imagining a scenario where I roll into the precinct each morning and get a wedgie from Detective Jones because he caught me reading AGoT on the shitter one day.

 :owned:

LMFAO! I read that about a minute after you posted it and I'm still chuckling over it.

ETA: And for the record, I was not a chair jockey either. My MOS was 13F: Fire Support Specialist.

Hey, i can't help if we had better looking girls and were treated better than you guys. Not my fault i walked into the right recruiter's office.

That does bring up a question i've had for a while though about the army. Why the hell did you pick that branch?

At least the Marines play up that Simper Fi shit, (and i could see how a self proclaimed geek like Stego could get sucked into a section of the navy that has commercials with a guy slaying a fire beast with a sword)

But i just don't see what they army has going for it. Every time i deployed with them they were treated like absolute shit. Most of the Equipment was crap. And it seemed like their entire officer corps was completely disconnected from their enlisted troops.

I also had the rare opportunity to act as the A/C on nothing but army bases while contracting in Iraq. And to be honest with you I don't know how the hell anything got done. The management was a pain in the ass to work with, and the troops were so worn down they didn't want to/couldn't really do anything.

Most of the cats i asked this question to over there said it was due to no other perceived options... you seem like a reasonably intelligent guy so i have to ask again.. .why the army?
