The Targaryens were the royal family, It seems natural that in a medieval society people would suck up to them -such as by praising their looks endlessly- to try and win royal favor. I think that The Targs are quite good looking, but it is exaggerated by people kissing their asses to try and win favour. Other houses (most notably Lannisters & Tyrells) are much more beautiful than Targs, but because the Targs were royal they got a better reputation thanks to ass-kissers. For example, given a choice between Jaime & Rhaegar, more highborn maidens would choose Rhaegar because he was royal, rather than for looks.

personally I love the whole silver hair and purple eyes. My friend works in a hotel the does conventions and they had a syfy fantasy con that I was on the fence about going to but I told her if a girl showed up with silver hair a purple eyes to let me know and I'd be there in ten seconds

I personally am not into the whole idealized look of the targs, but I think the wig was attractive on Harry Lloyd. But I think he looks a ton better without it. Emilia Clarke as well. Lets be honest, the people you care about, you will always appreciate their faults more than their good points. For instance, cupid's bow lips or a longer top lip are considered less attractive, but depending on your other features, they are beautiful. Like red hair. It's considered 'ugly' to many people, but I see the red-heads in asoiaf as really attractive. So either way you look at it, I can appreciate the beauty of the targs, but I'm not sure I'd choose Rhaegar looks wise over Robert back in the day. I personally prefer the Stark men. They are not beautiful, but the have something.

Actually, yes. I've never heard of or seen someone with purple eyes. I don't even want to Google it.

Some people have naturally platinum (white) hair (without being albinos) It's easy to tell since their eyebrows and eyelashes match. That can look hideous but if someone has a beautiful face, it can be actually quite striking.

But it doesn't quite make someone the most beautiful person ever. That is the thing that is really hard to believe - that the Targ's beauty has universal appeal. But maybe it isn't actually their looks alone that make them the most beautiful people ever to everyone. Maybe it's their good looks combined with their power (Dany has only been the most beautiful woman since she got three dragons at her beck and call) and the way they keep the myth alive (via incest and persistent inherited physical traits) that they are special, unique and different.

The Targs were Westeros' film stars, rock stars and absolute dictators, rolled up in one. Of course no one could compare.

Aside from the eyes, Robert and Brandon are not described that differently. I think Robert was bigger.

Some serious overrating of hair and eyes effecting overall attractivness is going on in this thread, because those two are some of the least important aspects when it comes to attractivness. You can have hair silver like stars and the deepest purple eyes, but it won't help if your face is ugly and your body is weird.

People obviously like blonde and silver hair. The notion of Targaryen otherworldy beauty or superiority I think is meant to parallel the real world behavior of certain people with lighter skin to set themselves apart from or look down upon people with darker skin. It doesn't happen as much in the modern day world but is still a real issue. This is something we see all around the world. People still buy skin lightening creams and things like that.

Do people really find the Targaryen looks attractive? In the books they do obviously but when you read the books do you find them terribly attractive?

Baratheons, Lannisters and Tyrells all have features that would be considered attractive in real life but the do women really like a man with silver blonde hair and purple eyes? The "inhumanly beautiful" sounds like something that chick who wrote Twilight nicked.

 

I do.  Yes, I do find them very attractive.  I think the Targaryens are meant to be the epitomy of physical perfection.  The females are beautiful.  You only have to look at the artists' work in the World Book to see how they interpreted them, based on the text.  George Martin himself said that if he could pick a few characters to have dinner with, one of them would be Dany because she is just so beautiful.  The other would be Aemon, for his knowledge.

 

I would picture the males looking like Thor, with a lighter shade of blonde.  Tall, athletic, long of limb, slender hips, wide shoulders, very smooth skin.  In other words, very masculine without looking like a pro football player.

Those pictures in the world book of the Targs/Valaryans were gorgeous especially Larra Rogare and Rhaenyra Targaryen are so pretty.

Just like it also has red in it. But you don't see people refer to purple eyes as redish-purple.
