Chancho
People in Westeros give too much credit to knightly knights with their deadly swords and infinite chivalry, Robert is too much too handle, he is a beast, and no one describe him as slow fighter. Common Folks and other knights are just biased towards knights... Robert never won pretty points when fighting... He is not the mountain, he is way deadly. James Arryn
How well does Dawn cut?Unknown.Certainly better than any real world blade ever could...Not unknown?...but it still wouldn't be able to get through plate armour.Okay, known? On that basis I would have to say Robert has a better chance of winning, given that a hammer is a near infinitely better weapon than a sword in an armoured fight.I don't know what I know anymore. JonCon's Red Beard
Unknown. According to Jaime, a small little touch cut his robes and made him bleed. Or maybe Arthur was just trolling him.
Pellinore
A sword is a pretty bad choice against plate but this is no normal sword - Dayne will be wielding Dawn, which is probably as good as a valyrian steel sword. But Robert is also extremely skilled and his weapon needs just one solid blow and armor or no, Dayne is dead. As far as Robert's skills are concerned - I think he is extremely skilled and does not just rely on brute strength. Jaime does think that he can take Robert but Robert also thinks he can take Jaime as well and personally I think Robert could easily take down the Kingslayer. So I think it is too close to call - either one can win and it will all go down to luck. I keep seeing mentions of Dawn vs. plate armor. I'm not sure why people are thinking Dawn could or should "slice through" plate armor. That is simply not what swords were designed to do during armored combat. A knight fighting an opponent in plate armor is going to look for the weak points and use his skill to be in a position to pierce through the armpit, the groin, the knee, or whatever point presents itself not covered by plate. And any thrust would probably be decisive. Also, for Robert's hammer. Unless his hammer has been described by George as otherwise, a medieval hammer is not going to be some ponderous monstrosity. It is going to be maneuverable, sufficiently light, and well balanced. Melee combat is incredibly taxing in a short amount of time. The weapon needs to be easy to wield and efficient. It would be usable with one or two hands. IMO, Robert is not walking around with Mjolnir. As for the combat, either one could win. It is well known that Dayne was extremely skilled. While Robert is known for his strength, I believe he is skilled as well. You don't just get lucky killing knights all the time. I also know that Dayne died and Robert didn't. ;) So, could Robert Baratheon defeat Arthur Dayne? Yes, undoubtedly. It probably depends on if Robert is fighting Dayne for a cause he firmly believes in, or not.

Oafkeeper
Yes, he could have. As has been noted and repeated people in the story, most notably Ser Barristan, the outcome of no fight is guaranteed. If Ser Arthur was better than Robert it was only a small gap. Rhaegar was a peer of his and Robert killed Rhaegar. Likewise Ned has gotten little combat hype but he still brought down Arthur.
Pellinore
Very few magical meteor swords have been scientifically tested, tho. Touche. However, if Dawn was a plate-mail cutting beast, I'm sure it would be a well-established fact in Westerosi lore that Dawn thinks steel is butter, and I think the Daynes might be less inclined to develop skill and would just slice though everything. Ser Arthur Hightower
Unknown. Not unknown?Okay, known?I don't know what I know anymore.I have to admit I laughed pretty hard. Though the first question was supposed to be rhetorical, for lack of a better word, the point was that Dawn is a magical element, thus the outcome of the fight is difficult to predict. Though now that I think about it the Smiling Knight's sword was fucked up pretty badly, but a sword hitting a sword has a much smaller area of contact than a sword with plate armour, and there is always padding underneath, so Dawn would still not be particularly useful. Laughing Storm Reborn
Arthur Dayne is legendary tier for me since the comparison grrm did with Barristan (another legendary tier warrior), but he wasn´t comparing dayne to robert...I could write a lot of feats George gave prime Robert but it´s a long list, longer than Arthur´s...Between legendary warriors the odds are 50/50 by the margin of Selmy, but there´s NOTHING grrm wrote in the books that makes Dayne superior to Bob in any martial ability, equals? sure, but better?
