[Book Spoilers] Official Theon Thread

I just wanted to praise Alfie's acting this episode, as I didn't really do that yet. Too often on shows you are told that people are weak but then they wind up doing things anyway. But with Theon, we saw him struggling to stand or walk. When he was thrown off his horse he couldn't even lift himself back up to his knees to crawl but he was still trying. As always, Alfie's Theon was very believable and he exceeded my high expectations for him this week. Plus, the whole chase scene itself (scenery, music) was magnificent.

Seriously, what does Ramsay say to Theon in the preview for next episode?

Theon: My sister's men are loyal to her, there's no need to hide from them.

Ramsay: ???????????????????????

Something like "Not all of those are your sister's men".

I think Theon kinda deserves it. And before you behead me and put my head on a spike... Let me elaborate, I don't buy all that Hammurabi eye-for-eye stuff, simply because what he did (meaning the boys he killed to make them pass as Bran and Rickon, or if we're talking about the show, killing Ser Rodrik) he did it to innocent people who truly did not deserve it, out of what? stupidity? grudge? peer pressure? whatever... He had the choice, he made a promise that no one would get hurt and innocent lives were lost because he thirsted for glory. He is not being tortured out of nowhere.

Summing up... I think he deserves it, but despite everyone's opinion, what I'd like to applaud is GRRM capability of making us hate so much a character in a chapter, and then make us feel sorry or even love it in the next one (Jaime for example, which I am totally sympathetic about but at the same time I praise how he became a much deep and interesting character after he lost his hand).

Great episode, enjoyed it completely.

Confused by the show. That must be Ramsay... but it sure doesn't seem like the one I know from the book. I do not think Ramsay's skill as an archer are ever mentioned in the books... in fact.. the book seems to indicate that Ramsay has little skill at combat. I think they really messed up the story line by not showing what actually happened at Winterfell. The idea coming from "reek" to burn the farmers boys, Ramsay's betrayal of Theon and razing of Winterfell, its just not there. I just need to keep telling myself its an adaptation and that things will end up more or less in the right place by the end.

I think having Reek at Winterfell would have added too much to the story. Combined with the other arcs, it's a fuckton of info to take in. Keeping the focus on Theon and not his Iago-like helper was a smart move for the TV show because it makes his own mind more front and center and grants one less plot thread to keep track of. Also, taking elements from Theon's flashbacks and the trolliciousness of the book's Winterfell stuff, Theon has something to do this season and we get to see him go from Theon to Reek (even if "Reek" is not the name they use).

Poooor Theon -- I agree that keeping him obviously disabled was effective. I wanted to say "listen to your instincts!" when he was at first scrambling away from the Boy when he appeared in the woods. Hehe, I kind of want a thought bubble above Ramsay's head when Theon grabs his cloak to help him stand up.

lol, what would the thought bubble say? :D

I was thinking the same thing when Theon was scramling away ... like, omg he totally senses that something is not right!!! It parallels his "rescue" in the book where he feels like something is kind of off, but thinks oh well, I'm saved, I guess.

Something to the effect of "The game is I touch you, not the other way around! :whip: " or "Hard...to remain...in character." Or maybe just a bunch of trollish giggling

As long as that beautiful horse of Theon's doesn't get its mane set on fire, I'm happy. Human torture, whatevs. Animals in pain make me curl up in a ball.

Well Alfie Allen did the part justice!

Great acting from him.

I think Ramsay being Roose's only remaining son was being groomed for an active role at the Dreadfort by his father.

Perhaps the Bolton men he killed had informed on him to his father in the past and he wanted them out of the way?

Not to mention he is plain evil and kills for fun even on his better days

The attempted rape and rescue scene was well done and I cant wait for next weeks installment to see what Ramsay has in store for Theon

I really like how they are doing Theon's arc. Including more of the storyline they dropped or moving Moat Caitlin to this season and turning it around, gives Alfie Allen more screen time and means he doesn't have to disappear for two seasons, or just be in endless torture scenes (which would be really unpleasant).

I think part of the killing of the Dreadfort men may have been that they overstepped their orders. Chase him, catch him, but perhaps they weren't authorized to rape him or torment him in any other way. That's Ramsey's job. That look on "Boy's" face as he swaggers over to the group, he looks pissed. Perhaps it was never his plan to kill the men, but to somehow help Theon escape again, but when they were playing with his plaything, that had to be shut down. :dunno:

The guy who caught an arrow to the face didn't even seem all that surprised, just sort of annoyingly resigned. You have to figure that being killed indiscriminately by The Boss' crazy-ass son is just another risk of the job when you're a Dreadfort man.

Yeah, on a rewatch, he kind of makes a "why am I not surprised" face. Hah.

Are they not going to be calling him 'Reek' in the show? That means we'd miss out on all that lovely poetry--Reek, Freak, Meek... :P

And I agree about Theon's beautiful horse, just a magnificent beauty. When Theon was galloping across the fields, I had visions of Gandalf on Shadowfax, riding to Gondor. Alas for Theon, he's about to meet his own 'dark lord.'

Since I only linked to it in the "You little bastard" thread, I'll repost. For real, dat swagga!

Imho, the murder-rescue played into Ramsay's long con, but he looked pissed when he walked up. I was getting a "That's MINE!" vibe. I guess he had to become a better warrior because his men drop like flies.

Oh yeah, the scenery-porn scene were Theon gallops across the field was gorgeous.
