[TV and Book Spoilers] Poor Theon

No, because it's too violent for her.

"Every person I know" isn't a representative sample. Rest assured that HBO have a better grasp on customer preferences than you do.

Im sorry, I forgot HBO is perfect. I guess that is why Girls is such a big hit...

I guess that is why Oz is still running....

Who could live without watching that great series Pacific....

so on and on and on and on

I'm worried about the Theon arc this season. I have been fine with it personally, but it hasn't gone over well with those who haven't read the book. I've seen/read it over and over that they are tired of it and that it isn't going anywhere. Does it take having read the book to understand what is happening.

And the thing is, I don't know what else they could have done. They can't do flashbacks like they did in the book. They can't have the actor sit on his hands for most of two seasons. They HAD to show this, and I'm not sure how they could have shown it any better.

I said HBO know more about customer preferences than you do, that hardly requires perfection. You give yourself way too much credit.

Here's how:

Theon is being tortured.

A woman comes to him and helps him escape, they are captured she is killed. [this is more faithful to the books and doesn't mandate the dumb 'OMG who is the boy' secret.

Theon gets taken back to the Dreadfort, Theon is tortured some more, this time by Ramsey Bolton, who has now IDd himself.

That is already more variation and closer to the books, but it seems the show thinks the Ramsey secret is super, super clever.

I think when all is said and done, Alfie Allen is going to be looked at as the best male actor on this show. He's willing to go there with Theon and soon enough Reek. Its an amazing story arch and I'm exicted to see the Dance stuff adapted.

I have some questions to ask those complaining about the gratuitous Theon torture scenes. I should preface this by saying I'm not a big fan of the Theon scenes in Season 3--and I actually consider myself a fan of so called "torture porn" horror movies, gore flicks, 70s rape revenge films and so forth. On the plus side Rheon plays the wacky sadist weirdo to a tee... I almost get shades of Jack Nicholson's and Heath Ledger's Joker, especially when he blows that horn. But the scenes are too repetitive, and they don't really go anywhere. Yes, I get all that. But here's the question that no one is answering:

What would you have them show instead? Assume the following: Leaving Theon out of season 3 and most of 4 is NOT an option. We can't just "have it be like it is in the books" where Theon disappears for a long time and suddenly re-appears in Book 5, where his torture is just an icky memory and not graphically described onscreen. I know you people are saying just show more Jon Snow or Dany or Arya or Davos instead, but ACCEPT THAT THEY CAN'T DO THAT. ASSUME Alfie Allen has a contract, he's a big deal as an actor, and ASSUME they agreed to give him significant screen time in every season whether you like it or not. At least one long scene in say, at least 6 out 10 episodes.

Under these constraints (I know you don't like them and want it to be EXACTLY like the books, but accept for a moment the realities of production/contracts, etc.), what would you have them show Theon doing instead?

Waiting for an answer...

I am more than fine that they are showing it now. It makes me more than hopeful that Feast and Dance will be compressed into one season.

You pointed out the issue, it is repetitive, we get it and now I hope we don't see him any more.

I do have one question though. In the books, Ramsey would only cut off a part after Theon begged him to right? So if that is the same, Ramsey didn't just cleave him, he skinned him and then waited until Theon begged to have his penis cut off.

But now that we have everything confirmed in the extent of torture, I would rather see time added to things like the Unsullied naming. The impact of their names was lost when it wasnt explained that they had no names, they chose a new name to use for the day each day.

I think a glaring difference between Dany and Theon is that while Theon was ordering the murder of children,

Dany ordered the torture of an innocent child in order to get their father to speak along with ordering her unsullied to kill anyone over 12 wearing a tokar thus some children were included (a 13 year old is still a child), does she deserve to suffer female genital mutilation for those acts?

Jaime decided to try to kill a small child only to cover up his own sins, should Vargo Holt have cut off his dick alongside his hand?

I do feel sorry for Theon. I am suprised some people still think he deserves what he's getting. Maybe he deserves to die but man I don't think anyone deserves this level of cruelty.

While I didn't love the scene last night I do think that sentiment is why they have to show some of this stuff. I hated book Theon going into ADWD and it took the whole book to make me sympathetic. Theon isn't Jaimie to either the book or show audience. He has to go through bad bad stuff before anyone thinks about redemption. I suspect we will move away from torture next year to more of a degradation type arc but it definitely is necessary. Did they pick the best way to do it last night, I don't think so but they definitely need to do it

I never got why Jaime who has done repeatedly worse stuff with worse consequences is so easily forgiven, while Theon is so hated.

^ B/C Jaimie is charming. To me thats one of my favorite things about the book/show. When you really look at it a lot of characters have done very similar things but our perceptions of said characters are so different dependeng on the context. Its how Jaimie and Qyburn can have that conversation about killing and saving people and still think the other is a monster while they themselves are juthistified. I mean are Robb and Theon really doing anything different whenTheon rebels against Robb and Robb in turn rebels against Joffrey. In Theons case he did it bloodlessly and yet he is the villain.

Jaime's actions, as reprehensible as they are, are logical. Theon attacking Winterfell was traitorous and low as fuck, as well as completely stupid. Even his own family said it was a dumb idea.

People have the right to like and hate who they want. If we're going off purety, only Ned is deserving of being liked and maybe Tomman.

Jaime is in the 'I can change him' badboy slotting; Theon is more an annoying fratboy shame fuck. I actually like both characters.
