[BOOK SPOILERS] Gendry and Melisandre Scene

I don't mind a little "sexposition" here or there like Viscerys in the tub talking about dragons while having sex with a naked girl...but it didn't add anything to the series, nor did the bride of Dracula torture henchwomen add anything to the story, nor did Mel's naked sex scene add anything to the story. Mel and Stannis having sex, fine, it was heavily hinted at in the books, they want to show on screen fine. Mel and Gendry having sex so she can then tie him up and leech him is idiotic. Pod in a room full of naked whores when Catelyn Stark has had like 3 lines of dialogue in the last month is idiotic. More talk of Talisa's butt than of guest right or the missing Frey army is idiotic.

To say that the reason why Catelyn Stark had little dialogue because of sex scenes is idiotic pure and simple. They had time to give her more dialogue, the writers (including GRRM) just dropped the ball when writing the particular scene, pure and simple.

The show makes choices. When the show chooses whore house scenes, scenes with made up characters, made up scenes that didn't exist in the books instead of other more plot relevent scenes then yes, indeed, they choosing one thing over another. They are choosing Pod in the whorehouse over Catelyn Stark.

Well... I have to admit, that I think, the sex-scenes in .... say ... spartacus were just just more fun.

They also seemed much more natural than in GoT.

Here in GoT, most of the sexscenes are kind of like... just strange and somehow unpleasant. They just dont fit in.

They feel so forced and unnatural. A "here some nudity you fools".

This scene Gendry and Melisandre was no exeption. No "thumb" up from me. :P

That's another thing. The sex scenes aren't even hot, theyre creepy. One ended with a dude getting his dick cut off, and the other with a guy gettinf leeches stuck to his dick. That sounds more like a nightmare than a wet dream.

Who is to say that if that sex scene wasn't there that more time would have been to Catelyn Stark?

Yeah, you have to go back to season 1 and Dany and Drogo to find a consensual, no money changing hands sex scene, don't you? Talisa, being an abomination, doesn't count, but even if I count them, that's two consensual non paying couples compared to every other sex scene is either whores or torture/whores

exactly. I have more of a problem with the made up, contrived scenes that are taking the place of actual scenes that are important than the fact that they are sexposition scenes. we've had virtually no direwolves, very little catelyn scenes, and the Robb scenes seem more focused on how hot Talisa looks naked than on anything else. Its a waste of time, its poor storytelling.

pod: sex machine is by far the stupidest, biggest waste of time scene ever.

I just don't see how Gendry's qualify as a sex scene. He was used as a blood donor in a way that didn't alarm him, so that not to spoil the blood.

He seemed kind of alarmed to me, what with the screaming, writhing to get free and begging...

Just one of the many little inconsistencies...that the lamb can't see the knife because it spoils the blood unless the blood comes from a leech and then being tied up and begging for mercy is okay, the blood is still all good. Rubbish.

How did it NOT qualify as a sex scene? They had sex, ergo, it was a sex scene. U actually see Melisandre reach down and move her hand as if she were putting him inside her. It was on a par with those lame softcore pornos like they have on cinemax.

And whether you have sex with someone first or not, if you tie them up and start putting leeches all over them, they are going to be kind of alarmed. He was screaming for mercy while she leeched him. so I don't think Gendry was into it, and his blood was definitely that of a scared person.

Too little too late, the leeches were already extracting his blood.

According to Stannis: this was a sacrifice, not a seduction.

ETA: Jon and Ygritte in a Cave ("Kissed by Fire") is a sex scene. This was not.

And another plot hole, since I somewhat doubt that Stannis would be that concerned with some random kid getting leeched, which doesn't actually cause him harm, and the conversation in the dungeon was about Gendry being sacrificed, as in, given to the R'hllor via fire.

Well... but that doesnt make any sense... first if the leeches are a trick, so there isnt anything to spoil.

Second, yes he was freaked out by them. That wasnt really "too late" if you ask me.

And anyway... why not just talk to him? Something like, the leeches would do him no harm ect.? He would have been LESS alarmed.

All in all, it just seems to me like a very strange and unpleasant way, to force some nudity on the audience.

Right. Considering the two giant bags of gold she gave the BWB, surely she could have sweet talked/bribed him into it, or, gee, um, now let me think, made him think he was sick and NEEDED to be leeched, kind of like what another similar person who always wore a red dress and worshiped a fire god did in something I read.....

I just meant that they'll be saying "The Lannisters send their regards." really small difference, just pointing it out :P

Just re-read my post. A misquote AND a typo. yeesh.

As to the sex/nudity, it sucks that there seems to be a quota. But when we say that time could have been given to Cat or someone else, remember the show always has to play the long game. Who is going to matter at the end of season 7 or 8? Not saying it excuses anything, but it's something I keep in mind while watching and it has kept the fact checker in me in check, so to speak (I'm so sorry for that).

Lastly, one thing that really hit home for me last night was how cool it is (at least I think so) that we know the darkness is coming, we've seen the White Walkers and wights, but Stannis and Davos have to take it on faith that Mel is telling the truth or right. And when you walk in on her, nude, having trick seduced a young man and putting a leech on his dick talking about lambs and knives, it doesn't exactly inspire faith that she has a clue as to what her god wants. For some reason, that never really occurred to me while reading the books.

At first I thought each leech corasponded to each person who was named. The "member" leech was for Theon Greyjoy (because of what happens to him while tortured), but then the other two leeches I didn't get. One leech was on his heart (?) and the other just on his chest, so my theory was ruined because Robb's leech should have been on his head or maybe the heart one was for Robb because he married the girl he loved, not a Frey. I don't know... I don't know why she didn't just drop 3 leeches on his chest.
