Jace, Extat
This looks awesome! SPACE, BITCHES!!! Maybe we can forgive the sins of Interstellar if it (and this) gets science-y films greenlit.

red snow
It didn't. No, I'd say it was doing a pretty good job of giving away most of the valid plot points. Not everything but it maps out far too much from the "I'm stuck on mars, alone" premise. They show he's assumed dead. They show he is able to establish contact with them. They show the Ares crew decide to go back for him and are commiting treason (or whatever the military word for disobeying is). The Ares crew are kept in the dark for most of the book and it is a reveal that they decide (or discover it's feasible) to go back for Watney That aside it does look promising. The book was a real page turner and it put it down as a great "holiday read". It was clearly always intended to be adapted into film but that's ok. I'm more excited about the fact that Ridley Scott is working off good source material. He's an amazing director but he has no quality control whatsoever when it comes to picking a project and it's clear that the films that work (the ratio of which has suffered in the last decade) are the ones with a great script/concept. This should be a winner. Matt Damon is a solid choice but I'd have wanted an actor with a bit more humour about them given Watney's character in the book. Damon is good but I've never considered him that great at delivering jovial/funny. It also seems a really strange choice given his role in Interstellar surely everyone is going to be expecting him to lose his shit and kill his rescuers at the end? Quoth
Such a good book. I hope the movie gets it right. Oh, indeed! Though I expect the movie to go quite a bit lighter on the "survival" science.
OnionAhaiReborn
The trailer didn't sway me one way or the other, but I hope this is good. I like Matt Damon but I also have trouble imagining him playing Watney's book personality. And I think they need to be more concerned with making this feel too similar to Gravity than to Interstellar.
The Anti-Targ
Looks promising, but will it deliver? Ridley Scott is a pretty reliable bet, but he has had some mis-steps.
Fez
Looked pretty good, hope it fleshes out some of the other characters from the book (who were all pretty one-dimensional except for Mark) although I agree that the trailer gives away way too much of the plot. SpaceChampion
Watney is just the author's personality dropped into the story, as are every single other character. Worst case of author-proxy I've ever seen. That said, the story is not in the characters, it's about just the fun of getting out of a difficult problem. The book always sagged whenever it wasn't focused on Watney but you're right in that the fun is seeing someone overcome obstacles by being smart instead of blowing things up. I'm always a fan of resourcefulness and astronauts are one of the few groups of people who are legitimately good multitaskers and experts.
