Ormond
It seems really appropriate that the new thread begins exactly on my second anniversary, and with the column on the ANS Names of the Year:http://www.omaha.com...IVING/701129967
Starkess
That's really cool. I totally would have voted for Sheldon and Leonard though! One nitpick: Liz Lemon is a character on "30 Rock" not "40 Rock." ;)
Ormond
Here's today's column:http://www.omaha.com/article/20100126/LIVING/701269977This column was a great example of how it really hurts me to have to compress this into 500 words. After finishing my research on Thaddeus, I had a 950 word column. I cut that down to 522 myself and the editor slashed it further. In my original column I mentioned Thaddeus of Warsaw, a now deservedly forgotten novel by Scottish author Jane Porter that was evidently a bestseller in the USA in the early 19th century and also helped to inspire some parents to use the name. And the editor cut the line "over half of the boys named Thaddeus born in the United States during the 1910-1920 decade had Polish immigrant parents." I spent an hour going through the Ancestry.com census record indexes from the 1920 census to figure that out and prove that it was the Poles who gave the name its highest boost in 1918. Oh, well, :)

brook
I guess thats one more thing my poor neglected third child can use to try and make me feel guilty about when he's older :). Not only did he get the dreaded D but D.A.M. initials. Maybe I should encourage him to go by his middle name so he lives longer :)

Mlle. Zabzie
This is funny - we are playing with names for our twins right now, and we have to be careful about this - we've already eliminated the letter B, because the initials (without middle name) would be BS (and we are cognizant of avoiding ASS and GAS). Zoë Sumra
My initials were nearly ZIP, but my mother noticed in time and changed my middle name to Louise. To match the middle names of, it feels like, 1/3 of the Caucasian girls born in Britain in 1980. :bang:
Tormund Ukrainesbane
I've thought a few times about changing one of my names so my initials would be CZAR. Then I started fearing Sara Palin my shoot me from her helicopter.

Where was this 7 months ago. Before we named our son Drew? :crying: Though his initials sort of spell Dazzle so maybe I'll work with that.Pretty interesting read btw. Adz of CCAA
I'm so glad that my parents gave me only one first name. One which I still like a lot. :)

Narishma Reborn
Huh. My initials are IRS. Are those a positive or negative set of initials? Should I take my fiancee's last name and become IRA? :)
brook
Though his initials sort of spell Dazzle so maybe I'll work with that.Dazzle seems to have become Darius' main nickname. I'm sure that will end up bothering much more than the D initial.

These things are so hard to predict. Who knew when naming our boys, we could be dooming them to bad grades and a shorter life span.Still I love the name Darius. It's pretty cool. Ormond
So my initials are MPTJVH. Where does that put me? ;)Also, Ormond, how does one join the ANS?On an alien planet, I suppose. :)As for joining the American Name Society, follow the link below and click on the PDF about how you join. When you go to the Maney website, it may seem that all you are doing is subscribing to our journal, but for an individual that is really the same as becoming a member. http://www.wtsn.binghamton.edu/ans/members.htm

Zoë Sumra
In this thread because it fits: the most unfortunate names in Britain. What do you call some of the most unlucky people in Britain?Justin Case, Barb Dwyer and Stan Still. It sounds like a bad joke, but a study has revealed that there really are unfortunate people with those names in the UK.Joining them on the list are Terry Bull, Paige Turner, Mary Christmas and Anna Sasin. And just imagine having to introduce yourself to a crowd as Doug Hole or Hazel Nutt.
