Can anyone clarify if the original eBook is dramatically different from the Ace version? I bought it a few months back and didn't know if there was an cleaned up / edited version.

There's a thread on this just down the forum dating back to when it was selfpublished.

I started it. It seems fairly ordinary in terms of content but very readable, the way it's structured.

Just finished this last night. Definitely worth the read and looking forward to reading the next installment. Had it's ups and downs as you'd expect from a self-published debut but all in all a very enjoyable read.

Now we have the publishing date of Tower Lord: July 2014.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tower-Lord-Book-Ravens-Shadow/dp/0356502449/

Good to have confirmation, that was the expected date.

A typical case of a book deliberately being delayed because of the marketing plan for it. Ace felt the series would be most successful if the series was published a full year apart. It makes for an unfortunately long wait, but this was expected.

We, fans of ASOIAF, should have no problem with that.

Haha, indeed, the 3rd book in this series is likely to be out before Winds of Winter hits shelves, measured by current progress, but at least in Martin's case his publishers are actually doing all they can to expedite the release and please the ASOIAF fans.

I'm surprised this book doesn't get more love around here. I think it is a spectacular opening to a new fantasy series. Very reminiscent of KKC with the protagonist's narration device. Can't wait for the second book to come out in 2014. I've read enough fantasy to know that a strong first book is no guarantee of a great series but I'm very hopeful. I've actually recommended this book to a few friends who enjoy fantasy and they all have also really loved it.

New Tower Lord plot synopsis:

In Blood Song, Anthony Ryan introduced readers to “a fascinating world of conflicting religions and the wars fought in the name of those faiths” (Library Journal). Now Ryan’s epic tale continues as Vaelin Al Sorna discovers that there is no escape from the call of destiny…

“The blood-song rose with an unexpected tune, a warm hum mingling recognition with an impression of safety. He had a sense it was welcoming him home.”

Vaelin Al Sorna, warrior of the Sixth Order, called Darkblade, called Hope Killer. The greatest warrior of his day, and witness to the greatest defeat of his nation: King Janus’s vision of a Greater Unified Realm drowned in the blood of brave men fighting for a cause Vaelin alone knows was forged from a lie. Sick at heart, he comes home, determined to kill no more. Named Tower Lord of the Northern Reaches by King Janus’s grateful heir, he can perhaps find peace in a colder, more remote land far from the intrigues of a troubled Realm.

But those gifted with the blood-song are never destined to live a quiet life. Many died in King Janus’s wars, but many survived, and Vaelin is a target, not just for those seeking revenge but for those who know what he can do. The Faith has been sundered, and many have no doubt who their leader should be. The new King is weak, but his sister is strong. The blood-song is powerful, rich in warning and guidance in times of trouble, but is only a fraction of the power available to others who understand more of its mysteries. Something moves against the Realm, something that commands mighty forces, and Vaelin will find to his great regret that when faced with annihilation, even the most reluctant hand must eventually draw a sword.

I read this a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it. I had the non-self-published version, which must have seen a copyeditor because I didn't see the problems others have noted.

I think it's a good debut, a story that it's pretty easy to find yourself immersed in. Not to say it's for everyone. You've got a coming of age story (half the book takes place during the protagonist's childhood in warrior monk boarding school) and the main character is essentially a superhero (more Batman than Superman, but still). Based on those two things, there are people I could see who would never enjoy the content. That said, I think this is the sort of book I'd expect to pick up more readers as time goes on (not that I'm an expert, but I feel there's something there).

3.) I suspect Caenis is going to be employed as an assassin by the royal family, either the King or Princess Lyrna. Vaelin notes the perverse pleasure he gets from sneaking up on people unawares, and when he asks him to stop Caenis says he is "practicing". His fanatical devotion to the King would likely make it easy for them to persuade him to do their dirty work.

I'm either going with already worked for the royals since before he came to the Sixth Order or going with he's a zombie. Or he's part of some third group. There's something more to him.
