Tellus Explorer
So I assume you all know your poison, and I'm hoping you could help me. What kind of whiskey would you say is 'good'?My boyfriend loves whiskey, but I'm not sure what to get for him. I mean, he doesn't seem picky, but I don't want to get him a bad one....if that makes any sense? Could someone help me??
DanteGabriel
Any particular types of whiskey? Scotch? Irish? Bourbon?
Xray the Enforcer
that's too broad a question for a whisk(e)y nerd to answer. The question comes down to:Does he like:Blended scotchSingle malt scotchBourbonAmerican whiskeyRyeOtherSo what does he drink already that he likes? (just give us some names -- don't sweat what kind of whiskey it is, if you're not familiar with the styles)
Tellus Explorer
He really likes scotchI'm usually drinking vodka so I barely see his bottle, but I know he's had monkeys shoulder, and another one which was really oaky. I don't remember what it was called but a few sips of that and I could taste a tree!
Talleyrand
If you want Whisky (Scotch) I'd recommend Chivas Regal, Label 5 and Famous Grouse. All pretty good brands but then again I usually just buy something cheap like Teacher's and drown it.
Xray the Enforcer
OK, that helps narrow things down a bit. Monkey Shoulder is a blended scotch with Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. Those three malts are all pretty easy-drinking (e.g. not a peat-bomb), so I'd suggest getting him Balvenie Caribbean Cask. It's tasty, it's unusual, and it'll likely appeal to his palate. For a friendlier price-point, try the Dalwhinnie 15 year or the Glenlivet 12. Another smooth favorite is the Highland Park. Lightning Lord
Laphroaig is one of my personal favorites. It tastes a bit like trying to drink a mouthful of charred wood mixed with dark peaty soil. Wonderful That said...not everyone likes the power of that flavor. A bit milder offering might be MacCallan. I feel it to be a bit mild, not totally to my taste, but also not bad in any way.Glenfiddich also has pleasant offerings, somewhere between the two I just named.Cheers
J_T
I'd recommend a Highland or speyside if he likes monkey shoulder. Glen Morangie make some great special cask finish scotches, I love their port cask and dessert cask finish scotches.
Tellus Explorer
He likes bourbon as well, but not as much as scotch. Uh....I know I've seen him drinking Aberlour A'bunadh and Glendronach
Tellus Explorer
Balvenie Caribbean Cask this one looks familiar , also he doesn't like stale whiskey (I dont know what this means exactly ) but he has a serious problem with that

Xray the Enforcer
I can't help with the fight against "stale" whisky, as I have no idea what that is. Does he not like a lot of oxidation or barrel aging? If so, then opt for the Dalwhinnie or Highland Park, which only see one barrel rather than two. Tellus Explorer
No, its not that, because he likes the dry whiskey and the oaky kind....Thanks for the recommendations so far guys If you come up with any other, let me know
Xray the Enforcer
He likes bourbon as well, but not as much as scotch. Uh....I know I've seen him drinking Aberlour A'bunadh and Glendronach 15I recently had the Glenfarclas 105. That one is in the same vein as the Aberlour. Might want to try to pick that up. It's cask strength and will put hair on everyone's chest.
Xray the Enforcer
You also might want to try the Ardbeg Uigeadail. It'll have a little more oomph than some of the others I've mentioned but it's still within the same general category of those you've already mentioned. Fragile Bird
One of the foremost whiskey critics in the world, Jim Murray of The Whiskey Bible, just named the Northern Harvest Rye version of Crown Royal as the best whiskey in the world.http://www.forbes.com/sites/karlaalindahao/2015/11/30/crown-royal-northern-harvest-rye-is-best-whiskey-in-the-world-2016/

Prosesskrift
You could also try a Japanese single malt, if you want to do something a little different. The quality is very high for the price, and they are much more pleasant than say my favourite, Ardbeg.A Japanese single malt typically holds a lot of wood flavours (vanilla, caramel, coconut) and a wide array of citrus.
