flrtwtrble
Does anyone have any awesome ideas on a birthday present for a 9 year old boy? He's got like 3 of everything, so looking for something out of the box (i.e. not legos) and fun.

TerraPrime
There are a lot of science/nature exploration toys out there, some more expensive than others. These include grow-your-own-crystals, build-your-own-robots, starter telescope kits, starter microscope kits, etc. I'd recommend picking something that has a good compandium activity book to go with it, or to buy him a separate book on the topic to inspire his interests. The Mance
A telescope. Or binoculars. I used to give little 7x32 binoculars as gifts to kids that age. Can be found for around $10 US
Iskaral Pust
It depends a lot on the child. We've given our son a microscope, chemistry experiment kit, robot building kit and similar items over the last couple of years (he just turned 8). He loved them all except for the microscope, which hasn't really caught his imagination yet. Amazon has lots of options. But he also still likes to receive Lego, even though he has loads already, new books are always enjoyed (Tintin and Asterix are unusual in the US but were a big hit). He would probably love a laser-tag set or similar weapon-related play (most boys do, and most moms try to restrict the amount of violence-themed play). At 9, a boy may also be influenced by fad toys. I got some bey blades for my nephew a few years ago and became the all-time favorite uncle. I don't know what the equivalent is today. My son and his friends are all establishing early sports allegiances and asking for team shirts to wear to school to display their tribe.
flrtwtrble
Thanks for the suggestions! He's gotten a ton of those chemistry/science sets and legos. I really wanted to buy him a drum set, but my sister-in-law nixed that idea. But then she told me to buy Pokemon cards -- lame. I like the build your own robot idea. lady narcissa
When I was 9 nothing was more awesome than getting awesome books as presents (still holds true today!) So I say give him the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper.
aceluby
How about a mini-guitar and amp? You can pick up both for around $150.
Cuellar
Ipad and/or games is probably going to be his choice. If he's got a PS4 or Xbox you can get something for that. On the other hand, I do like the telescope idea...

I'm also going through a phase of writing messages in the front of books. Some people hate that, but I love a personalised message. It shows that a book was given with love, and makes it more special, imho.
