Weeping Sore
Seriously. Is it time to end discrimination between male and female nipples by freeing the latter? Or should we be covering up the former? Let's take Andreja Pejic's nipples for example. Now that she is acknowledging being a transgender woman, her nipples are obscene, but her topless magazine covers were okay when she was being billed as androgynous male model Andrej Pejic? http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fresources0.news.com.au%2Fimages%2F2011%2F12%2F14%2F1226221%2F572404-andrej-pejic.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.news.com.au%2Fentertainment%2Fcelebrity-style%2Fphotos-fn9076o9-1226067682485%3Fpage%3D1&h=488&w=366&tbnid=a5PGpfPAYrA9RM%3A&zoom=1&docid=ww5CiOYrrvfIWM&ei=IQqHVJOZOsGcgwSP34OoBA&tbm=isch&ved=0CC4QMygQMBA&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=2170&page=1&start=0&ndsp=

sologdin
by folk etymology, we might get at it as latin ob- ('onto') and scaena ('theatre/stage'), which indicates to me that nipples are only obscene when represented as part of the melpomenean or thalian arts (some might argue, of course, that it's not meant to be taken literally, and applies to all manufacturers of cultural products). the inverse corollary is therefore that nipples are never obscene when not represented, i.e., are presented in the flesh. What if they are part of a fourth-wall shattering "happening"? To be fair, I think those almost always involve exposed nipples.

davos
Nipples are not obscene. They are part of the human body, no part of which is fundamentally obscene or dirty. It is context and cultural factors that define when something is obscene. We need to, as a society, accept that the uncovered female is not in and of itself sexual, much less offensive. sologdin
obvious answer for the gendered differential would be that the symbolically inert male nipple is a benign blemish, whereas the symbolically functional female orifice serves an excretory function, and is therefore a quantum singularity of prurient interest into which the whole world might tumble unless it is contained by cotton prophylaxis. Is it really Oedipal fixation or a desire to return to infancy?

sologdin
heh. the dogmatic opening and the manifestly ludicrous second clause indicate ridicule of the gendered differential and of explanations such as the one tendered, rather than an endorsement? Spring Bass
Nipples are not obscene, and women should have equal right to go bare-chested as men. In a surprising number of places, they legally can, although it's not common because of social norms and/or a bunch of creepy assholes with cameras showing up to leer at them (like New York City IIRC). SkynJay
Nipples should always be visible, easy to catch witches if you find that third nipple. More reliable than sticking pins in everyone too.
smegma
Nipples aren't obscene at all, however personally I don't want to see them in public - guy or girl. I just prefer to keep things covered up! That doesn't mean they shouldn't have the right to do so. I can always turn my head and be on my merry way. Nipples should always be visible, easy to catch witches if you find that third nipple. More reliable than sticking pins in everyone too. I have a third nipple, and it's certainly the source of all my powers.
