Darth Richard II
I know the first one had uh, dived opinions. I was, bizarrely, considering finally reading it when this happened. Anyone know what's up? Publisher go boom? Sales? Editors? He said fuck it and went to live as a monk?
Deedles
Oh that's unfortunate. I can certainly see why people didn't like the first, but after a while I got into it and rather enjoyed it. I hope indefinitely a) is not due to any personal issues, and b) is a short period of time.
Darth Richard II
It's odd. From what I understand the book is done and ready to go. And I THINK the first one sold well, so, I dunno if there was a contract snafu, or PYR shit the bed finally, or, what. And there's like no news or even discussion about it anywhere. Unless its an edelweiss.amazon database error?
SkynJay
Damn it. I want book two.
Darth Richard II
Does book 1 stand by itself? I don't want to start a series if it's going to be unfinished.
Lord Patrek
I know that Pyr had high hopes for the first novel. They pushed it harder than they usually do. But perhaps the sales were far from what they were hoping for. . . Haven't heard anything on my end. . . Patrick
Puntificator
According to what he wrote on his Facebook page, Mark Smylie left Archaia Entertainment last month.
The Reckoner
Is Pyr a lackluster publishing house?
Darth Richard II
Well, depends how you want to define lackluster. Their track record for me, personally, has not been good. Which is too bad, I used to buy pyr novels just because they were pyr.I know it didn't sell millions but I thought sales of the first book had been decent. Also seems weird, if it was sales, to cancel it this close to release. The Reckoner
I liked Abercrombie and Lloyd. Didn't really get into Barclay, and was so-so on Enge's Morlock Ambrosius stuff.
Jussi
and was so-so on Enge's Morlock Ambrosius stuff. The first Morlock novel Blood of Ambrose was nominated for World Fantasy Award in 2010. That was a big thing for Pyr.
SkynJay
Does book 1 stand by itself? I don't want to start a series if it's going to be unfinished. It reads like a stand alone. You would be fine.
Ebenstone
Well there was some upheaval at Pyr with the editorial situation, but that's handled now. Interesting to see how this shakes out.
Puntificator
I guess nobody noticed my post and how it's related to this thread, so I'll repeat it:"According to what he wrote on his Facebook page, Mark Smylie left Archaia Entertainment last month." This would strongly suggest the problem is not with Pyr (after all, they haven't canceled the book as of yet), but with who has the rights to publish Artesia stories—Mark Smylie or Archaia.Entertainment. In case you still don't get the connection: Mark Smylie's new book, Black Heart, is an Artesia novel.
Lord Patrek
Ah well, if it's all about rights, then this could go down the crapper real fast and take a long time to sort out. . . :worried: Patrick

Seems to me that the question is not who has the right to publish the second book as Pyr would have already gotten those rights and paid for them. The question is more likely who has the rights to the charcters or subsequent novels. If Smyie signed a bad cntract on the first or second book he may have given away the farm. Garlan the Gallant
He would have to be pretty foolish to have filed the rights under Archaia, the company he founded, rather than to himself.

johndance
I saw Amazon changed the release date to 2035 and was curious. I hope it gets figured out soon. I thought the first one was great. It got pretty dull in the middle, but the last 150 pages or so we're excellent.
