[Book Spoilers] Rant and Rave without Repercussion

I think D&D lost interest in Dany as soon as Emilia Clarke decided she didn't want to get nekkid on screen anymore.

This. How dare an actress we want to see naked have self-respect? Too bad we can't just replace her with someone prettier...

I just realised Cheb calls Doran Prince Bashir

I couldn't resist this either when I still watched. XD "I don't think Dr. Bashir will appreciate hearing 'The Dornishman's Wife', Bronn..."

I sometimes wonder what would happen if they had a guest director like Peter Jackson do an episode or two. For the most part, his adaptation of The Lord of the Rings was great. I don't know if he's read ASOIAF but he would be an interesting director stylistically. I have always liked his films and seems to grasp his character's motivations pretty well. Even a director from Vikings would be interesting because that show is one of the most eerily beautiful series I've seen in a while. I enjoy the characters on that show and really like how they handled their recent season themes.

I would have to wonder about Jackson tho. I loved LOTR, flawed tho it be. But the Hobbit? Hated it. Too much Peter Jackson, not enough Hobbit, so much so that the first movie was more than enough for me. If he could put a similar effort into GOT as he did LOTR he might pull it off tho. Would be interesting at any rate.

I would agree there are issues apart from the writing, but the writing is the main problem. I think the showrunners also get in the way of the effectiveness of the directors at times, or don't help matters.

Hound vs. Beric was good source material (until they messed up the moment between the Hound and Arya at the end), good acting, as well, but the director broke the 180 degree rule, which made the scene less effective.

What is the '180 degree' rule? Never heard of it.

Honest question. Are D&D neckbeard nu atheists? Putting aside their treatment of Catholicism/Faith of the Seven on the show, their casual mysogyny, obsession with bewbs and generally adolescent view of sex seems to confirm.

One of the Ds scripted Troy. I like the movie (I won't deny it, although it's mostly for personal reasons and Eric Bana) and my son is crazy about it since he was a kid because Fuck Yeah, Achilles! but I have two main problems with the adaptation.

1. The presence of the Gods in the Iliad is very important, even much more than in the Odyssey. I was ready to watch some Gods on screen aaaaaand... Brad Pitt's bare ass, that was all we got (not that I complain, though). The whole movie was a lot of "fuck the Gods, we humans rule!" (No, Achilles, you're not fully human, you're not a real boy, shut up) while it should have been very much like Tyrion's infamous chat about beetles because that's what the Iliad is mostly about: the gods smashing us like beetles. And

2. Why, oh, why Achilles was all "LEAVE MY BRISEIS ALOOONEEE!" instead of "LEAVE MY PATROCLUS ALOOOOONEEEE!!". The guy was his beloved "cousin", for god's sake...

Oh, yeah, and the music. The music was mostly "oh, noes... someone died" OOOHHHHEAAAAAHWAAAAAAAH... "oh, noes... Troy has fallen!" WAAAAOOOHHEAAAAAAAHHHH.

What I don't understand is why are people so angry at Tyene and the Sand Snakes-Bronn plot!!

We all agree here that the show doesn't make sense. We all also agree here that the only way they can show women is as psycho bitches or sexy bitches.

I would rather watch boobs (and beautiful boobs at that. Go Tyene!) in a nonsensical show, than go through another of Sand Snakes psycho fighting/scheming/dialogues. Atleast boobs don't make me want to kill myself.

Though for the otherwise inclined, I am ready to concede a few diplays of dongs on the show as well, because why not? A story with boobs and without sense is soft porn anyways

EDITED FOR GRAMMAR AND SPELLING

My theory on the subject:

HBO has a fixed quota between the screentime scenes containing bosoms and scenes of a homoerotic nature gets per season. Loras has been very active in this season at Littlefingers brothel. Since we are at episode 7, they chose to up their game rather than having to film an all female topless seige of Winterfell.

It was Benioff. And Wolfgang Petersen directed it for some reason (Das Boot is a great film but Troy really isn't.) My major takeaway from that film is that I really wanted an Odyssey with Sean Bean as Odysseus, because he was fantastic, though not in enough scenes.

[...]

(Episode 1 Opening and Ending still gives me the chills, it was really good!)

Edit: Also, characters like Margaery who appear on the game seem more fleshed out.The protagonists (the Forresters) are real, relatable, memorable. The dialog is great. There is attention to detail. There is nothing gratuitous about them. It's more true to Martin than the show even though it IS based directly ON the show.Oh! The female characters...are well written :D

I'm at the beginning of part three. In the second part, there is a funeral scene of a character that is not even very important to the story, but it is to the characters, and so there is a long, sad funeral scene with beautiful music - about three to four minutes that are just about the mood, nothing else. That's what I am missing in the show - moments of genuine atmosphere, a camera that explores the setting and the mood of a scene.

You're not the only person I've met saying that. It should be the tagline for the movie: "Troy... with Sean Bean who plays Odysseus but we won't give you that movie because we're assholes and you'll find out why in the next ten years".

Oh I would love to see that. Particularly when this army makes monstrous phallus shaped rams and seige towers. I would take that as a homage to Joso's cock and satisfy my crying inner child.

I think the confusion is that there are two Jaeharyses. Jaeharys I is the one who convinced the FM to disarm. That was about 250 years before the time of the books. Jaeharys II was the son of Aegon V (Egg). He was Aerys II (The Mad King)'s father. I think it's Jaeharys II that they cut. Of course, they also make mention of a King Orys I believe, so it's unclear how the show and book lineages line up.

Ah, thank you. My Targaryen history is clearly not what it could be.

I have serious issues with his LotR adaptation myself, so I vote no on Jackson as guest-adaptor.

Talking of good adaptations, though, why don't we hire Emma Thompson as a guest-writer? She did Sense and Sensibility and agonized over how to get it on screen the right way. I really like that version, though nothing out-does A&E's Pride and Prejudice.

What is the '180 degree' rule? Never heard of it.

I wasn't in the director part of film school, but I believe this is the rule where you do not shoot more than 180 degrees around a scene. That fight went to at least 275.

Not as a serious adaptation, but I totally would watch that.

I vote yes for an Odyssey starring Sean Bean as well.

Now I really want to find this. There's a version for Android?

I haven't read most of the thread but I think I'm in agreement with what, at least, some people have been saying. A few things that took me out of experiencing the show were: getting clubbed over the head with Olly once again, Ramsey continuing to suffer from multiple personality disorder, the ridiculous "poison control" Tyene displayed with Bronn (which was really just another excuse to meet the bewbs quota), and the tiny little pre-fighting pit that it was supposedly "tradition" for the queen to attend (I get that they needed Dany to be able to be close to Jorah and Tyrion but, of course, the show runners also didn't have to spend for more CGI or do a "bigger" scene this way, too.)

Emma Thompson as guest-writer? That would be delightful considering (as I understand) currently their are no female writers on the show now? A fresh point of view from an experienced writer might great.

Thanks for the explanation on the 180 rule. That scene was one of my favorites actually. Their portrayal of the Hound went downhill from there, sadly.

Reflecting on P&P, with GOT I hear from it's fans that folks who don't like it is because we 'don't get the changes, it's not the movie we want to see....blah, blah, blah." When actually, having seen great adaptations of books to TV, we know it can be done. And it's not being done in the current show, and that's just too bad to see such piss poor efforts being made.

I reckon my love of season 1 is mainly due to Sean Bean. As soon as I heard he was being cast as Ned I knew he'd be terrific and he was. Couldn't they at least throw in the odd flashback scene of him or Charles Dance?

They should do some flushbacks, but i don't think they will.

It's getting slow. the writing is not as good as it was last year. where is varys? did he go back to king's landing?

He's still paddling along side Gendry, who's still rowing, as they make their way to the Shining Sea together.

The cinematography on GoT is fairly pedestrian. The action sequences this season have been dire, the lightling and staging of scenes has been terrible. Some of it has to do with location, like filming a Dorne beach scene in wind swept Ireland, but it's mostly just laziness. Compare with Madmen, Penny Dreadful, True Detective. All shows that have far smaller budgets than GoT but have vastly superior cinematography. Even when GoT makes a real effort to impress us, as in the attack on Castle Black by the Wildings, they fuck it up. Cue Awesometastic tracking shot ruined by obvious and very badly done CGI. Not a matter of money just too lazyassed to do things properly. Even Oberyn's fight with the Mountain was crap, I mean how can you fuck that up?? It looked like something from TMNT. The last time I actually enjoyed a set piece on this show was Stannis riding against the Wildlings and before that Beric's fight with the Hound, few and far apart.

I've been saying this forever. Sometimes it's like I'm watching a soap opera. That's how bland and non-remarkable it is, just a notch of your average CBS procedural. What's the point of shooting in all these cool locations if you're going to be as pedestrian as possible? And the lack of stylistic choices is baffling. I get not trying to come off as gimmicky or whatever, but everything is so rigid, so by the book in terms of lightning, editing, writing.

I can't help but comparing it with Penny Dreadful right now, and my god, the difference is mind-blowing.

Fuck me yeah, it's been said already but we were all hoping for a Gladiator style Maximus reveal in front of thousands in a huge arena and we get.....play fighting in a sand pit while Dany sits on a sofa on some scaffolding that took the props guy maybe an hour to erect. What are they spending all that money on?
