[Book Spoilers] EP508 Discussion

Recommended Posts

Did you even watched the episode? Because I seem to remember that, two weeks ago, you swore never watch the show again. Never. So either you changed your mind and you are, after all, watching this horrible show made by these "assholes" (as you name them), or you are criticizing something that you have not even seen, which would be pretty stupid, IMHO...

So, are we getting personal, isn't? Not as clever as you think. No, I haven't seen the episode. Luckily enough for me, all the scenes are around and easily available. I have watched a few of them, the ones that I'm interested on criticising. The final battle I've seen it. It was... interesting. I didn't like it as a whole except as it might have confirmed a few theories I have about the Others and their relationship with the Starks.

If you havent watched the episode keep away from this forum

I didn't know this was your forum or you were my parent to tell me what to do. I'm trying to be just as nice as I can, but people is just keep telling "we don't like your opinion, go away". :dunno: If you don't like me here, then go and report me, right? I'm not disrespecting the rules.

In any case, the post I wrote was a response to another one stating that the show shouldn't be feminist or how the book readers are bitter people. That was was I responding too. That was something I have the right to speak about because it was an poorly accurate way of defending the show and signalling criticism.

When the whole defence of the show (or any show) is anything like "you just don't like it because you're a book snob!" or "what? why should the show being feminist!!", then it proves the show lacks the ability to defend itself with its own narrative as we're touching meta content.

You are posting in the episode discussion thread without even having seen the episode? Barring even the content of your posts, that's... pretty ridiculous.

If your criticism concerns the show as a whole (or, well, the parts of it you have seen), why don't you make a discussion thread about that? Call it "My opinion about the flaws of the show in the parts of the show I have seen", or something. Or, alternatively, why don't you try to apply your posts and rants to 5.08, if you have seen "scenes" from it?

The hypocrisy, that's astounding.

JCRB has seen certain scenes from the episode, as she said. Why shouldn't she pass comment on those?

The answer would still be LAWL SHADDUP

In fact, if she went back to R&R and stayed there as suggested, this thread would become about LAWL PPL IN THE R&R THRED NEED TO SHADDUP, as it was just a few pages back.

Maybe just post your opinion, or don't, and keep your interactions to people worth interacting with.

Dunno, why doesn't she? She comments about D&D being assholes (her words) and the show failing to be feminist enough.

Here's an idea! I should go to the fifth book 2nd chapter forum and pile all over the book series for rape and torture porn fantasies of GRRM... oh gosh darn, I've actually read all the books and every chapter in them so that wouldn't work anymore :(

Dunno, do you or are you simply defending a fellow multithousand poster out of the sense of fellowship or based on something she actually did do?

Just remember, guys, this is how threads get locked.

I thought the thread was probably people ranting about the idiots who come to complain about the show.

Its the same with the interminable R+L=J thread which is up to 141 threads now. Superficially, it looks like the theory is really solid because of all the posts. But there are thousands of different folk pointing out the obvious holes in the theory (like Jon would still be a bastard and it matters and it is way too obvious to be the solution) and only a dozen cranks who have 10,000 posts or more keeping it going by tearing into anyone who dares contradict their notion.

Not to derail the thread entirely but there are some of us who don't think he is a bastard. The Targaryens were bigamists in ages past. They only stopped because of the Faith. (And really hoping to not derail further but the point of Jon not being a bastard is important thematically because Tyrion is actually a bastard of Aerys) :leaving: Edited by Stonehearted Snake

Don't you need to be, like, legally married or something to be a bigamist first? :)

Are Dany and Hizdahr actually married yet? I know they've said they are going to be married but they haven't actually wed, right? I think that's an interesting choice for the show to make.

Yeah I think they (Rhaegar and Lyanna) were married but it's not like there is really a system of legal marriage - it's all based in religion. And since Rhaegar and Elia were already married he's then a bigamist. (I know this is stretching it somewhat but it's my favorite pot that maybe has just a few cracks in it!)

LOL, that is probably more on point that ranting about the rant and ravers, no?

I HATE the Tyrion as a secret Targ idea, and hope it's false, and so far, the show hasn't even hinted at such a thing, especially w/Tyrion killing his father saying I am your son.

I agree that there is the possibility that Jon is a legitimized Targaryen, but I still lean toward the idea that it's his blood that will be important and not his legitimacy, e.g. he's not going to sit the IT and no one but his immediate circle may ever know his true identity.

In the books? Yes, they have married already.

He actually made a valid point. You can't watch one scene and say something like this:

I have watched a few of them, the ones that I'm interested on criticising. The final battle I've seen it. It was... interesting. I didn't like it as a whole --

You're not watching it as a whole. Imagine if I watched one scene out of a horror movie. Imagine if I watched Lord of the Rings just for the Bridge of Khazad Dum scene. I'm not going to care about Gandalf or understand what is going on.

That brings me to something I wanted to mention earlier: it's been said the battle wasn't all that great because it's just mindless "spooky skeletons" and fighting but the reason it's resonating with so many people because it's a turning point in the war fight against the Others. We've been building up to something like this for five seasons now.

Not to mention it was well directed, choreographed and acted. Theories were confirmed. It was good stuff all around.

Ok I promise we can talk about this more in another thread since I don't want this to be closed for being OT - but I used to utterly hate A+J=T until I really looked into and talked through the thematic significance of it with the folks who run that thread in the book forum. There is actually really deep thematic relevance to the character arcs of both Jon and Tyrion if it turns out they are actually the reverse of each other. Remember - their first conversation was about being a bastard and owning it. And also I find it thematically resonant that then Jaime killed Tyrion's father while Tyrion killed Jaime's. I could talk about this so much more and bring up so much other thematic relevance but like I said don't want to derail too much. Ok back on topic :) Edited by Stonehearted Snake
