Arkhangel
So the school I work at (actually, our sister school in the same building) has just made national news for having the first LGBT history course offered by a public school. Unfortunately I made the mistake of reading the comments. The school has 30% of students identifying as LGBT so it's an appropriate elective to offer but I feel bad for any students who make the same mistake I just did. 30%, really? That seems vastly higher than the proportion of LGBT people in the population in general - why are there so many LGBT students at this particular school, do you think? Kat
It's an art magnet school that has a reputation for being safe, which probably has a lot to do with it. The school I work at also has a higher than average LGBT student population (at least according to the most recent survey) for the same reason. Robin Of House Hill
San Francisco has the highest percentage of LGBTQ folks of any city in the country. Within that city, there are areas with some pretty high statistics. ETA: Ninja'd with even better info.
Arkhangel
That's really interesting. How does that change the power dynamics of the school and between the students, compared to others you've worked in?
Lily Valley
Kat, that's great. Don't know how you'd combat the comments. Trolls suck.
Weeping Sore
Holy shit. I just told my boss I am trans. I was in tears. She had no idea what the fuck to say, but encouraged me to call the corporation's help line for counseling. Waiting for the other shoe to drop... Weeping Sore
Thanks Robin. I'm not great at hugs either, tbh. ETA: it looks like the free mental health services through my job are actually kind of awesome; no information shared with my insurance company for 24-hour a day phone counseling and then 3 free in-person sessions. Feeling a little less anxious about outcomes, at least vis-a-vis work.
karaddin
Well that's certainly good, I hope the staff have at least some familiarity with trans issues so they are helpful

Robin Of House Hill
SCOTUS has overturned the ban on same sex marriage. http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/14-556_3204.pdf Now that they've got what they wanted, how long do you think it will be before they drop the T from LGBT?
