People's Choice - Top 100 Characters *Complete List*

There is some interesting analysis that can be done with this data, which can be time consuming. But just glancing at the votes gives me some interesting patterns about reader preference for certain characters.

For example, Jon and Arya tend to exchange first and second place a lot. Its not surprising that they got equal amount of first places. If readers really like Jon (i.e) he is placed in position one, then Arya is almost always on their list and vice versa. Readers either like them both or don't like them both all that much.

When Arya is someone's favorite character (No. 1), Sansa is almost always missing from those lists or is found towards the end. This implies that the Arya fans who voted here either don't like Sansa or are indifferent towards her. This is also true for Jon. Very few people who voted for Jon as their favorite character put Sansa on their list. The opposite is also true. If Sansa is number one or is near the top, both Arya and Jon are either missing or are at the bottom.

Fans of Dany and Jon are rather predictable. If Dany is number one, its hard to find Jon on that list and vice versa.  But more Dany fans did put Jon in their list compared to Jon fans putting Dany on their list :)

A couple of the lists with Catelyn as number one had Jon missing and vice versa.

A more thorough analysis would probably give more insight into reader bias for certain characters. It will be interesting to do the same with Tyrion, Jaime etc.

That's pretty interesting.

More analysis would be great: what about Asha and Theon fans too?

TYVM Bustard.

I noticed (a bit late) that the backup apparently happened on the 2nd or 3rd and we are once again in the stage of things being posted potentially disappearing after the forum upgrade, so I've started recording the votes again.

Correlations between characters are something I would find interesting...

Edit: The first-place votes seem to match up if you count only 1a (Jaime) as a first-place vote for that one vote.

You're absolutely right. I just edited the OP to give Stannis and Oberyn 1 more first place vote.

For the final results I definitely plan to focus on the statistical analysis more than the character descriptions! I like where your heads at.

I had Sansa at #2, Arya at #3, Dany at #5, Jon at #8 and Catelyn somewhere in the other half, don't remember which place.

Jaime is #4 and Tyrion #7.

The updated results thread was among the casualties of the forum upgrade, so I'll repost the results here.

First off, thanks so much to everybody for participating! I recorded a grand total of 463 votes, which include 248 different (qualifying) characters! The turnout exceeded my expectations and I'm thrilled to provide such a comprehensive listing of forum favorites :)

Poll format:

- each voter listed between 5 and 20 of their favorite characters in order of "most favorite" to " least favorite"

- the first character on each list received 20 points, the second character received 19 points, and so on

- excluded non-human characters and those who died before the series began

- content based solely on the books

Here's a listing of every character to receive votes that failed to crack the Top 100:

Furthermore, here is my long-overdue gender post. I did my own count, back in October, and also recorded the gender listed in the voters' profiles, since I thought it would be interesting to see how that affected the votes.

Note that my count does not match up with Bustard's exactly -- the main reason seems to be that there were some votes sent in via PM, which I've obviously missed. In particular, I have Eddard ahead of Stannis, Sansa tied with Sandor, and Bran ahead of Barristan.

I counted votes from 168 male, 77 female and 192 "not telling" voters.

Here are the top 25 among male voters, with changes in rank compared to my overall count:

1. Tyrion Lannister - 1713 (+1)

Why is it weird? Ygritte is a real character as opposed to Howland who exists only in back stories. In my opinion, him and Arthur are the most overrated characters.

Yes, they are both real characters and Ygritte has been seen in pages with a main character. But she was a "flash" in the story and is now dead.

Howland has his two (1?) children out with another main character and Howland knows things no one else , or a very limited few, know that will carry the story further while confirming/debunking theories. He is a connection to past, present and future.

I can see the overrated thought, I certainly don't think he is a bad ass hero type, just very important. Arthur has his own in-verse fanboys that hold him on high because to me he seems in the slight above average class.

I do think that the fact he hasn't appeared is the big thing holding Howland back here. It's hard for people to really fall in love with a character they haven't met. Consider this list of (I think) all the ranked characters who have not appeared onscreen:

T110: Howland Reed (52 pts)

T128. Lyanna Mormont (30 pts)

T134. Willas Tyrell (26 pts)

T150. Lynesse Hightower (20 pts, from one vote)

T201. Harrold Hardyng (6 pts)

T240. Shella Whent (1 pt)

Given that Howland never shows up, it seems he did quite well.

Meanwhile, I don't really think Ygritte was a "flash". She appears in eight chapters over two books, which is more than many characters ranked ahead of her. Asha is in eight chapters, Tormund seven, Doran just three. Oberyn is in five chapters, died in the last one, and is ranked higher than any of those. So it doesn't seem to me that Ygritte did unusually well for a character who died after eight chapters, although I don't know if you were singling her out specifically as a character who placed unexpectedly high or just chose her as representative of the type of character you think Howland should have beaten.

I guess I look at the story as a whole and we are only halfway through... Well, maybe 75%. Howland has been mentioned in every book so far. Fair enough with ygritte being on page. I guess I can see how that could wrangle up a few points but again I go back to the series as a whole and she is just one part for a few months with one character and now she is Ned dead. With Howland there is more story and backstory and he could appear on page. But hey, to each their own. It's an opinion survey anyway.

Bumping this again. I looked at the correlations a bit. I decided to calculate the correlation coefficient (Pearson's r) between the number of points (including 0 if they did not vote for the character) people gave to the characters in a pair for each pair out of the top 10.

Here is the table.

Jon
0.2367Tyrion
0.07830.1820Jaime
0.37430.34730.0563Arya
0.11160.04720.08430.1589Davos
-0.0383-0.11980.0914-0.21070.2455Stannis
0.18360.0004-0.01630.07580.16580.0560Eddard
-0.03300.0039-0.14770.0287-0.2313-0.3563-0.0018Dany
-0.01340.03440.17730.12130.08900.04400.0468-0.1215Sandor
0.0118-0.07290.10930.07180.0045-0.05900.02170.14710.0423Sansa

Since my null hypothesis is that each pair is uncorrelated, and the sample size is fairly large (437), I transformed the correlations via the equation t = r*sqrt((n-2)/(1-r2)), then did a two-tailed t-test. I used the Holm-Bonferroni method to control for the large number of comparisons, so that the overall chance of at least one false positive is no more than .05. I found twelve significant correlations:

  1. Jon/Arya: p = 5.550×10-16
  2. Stannis/Dany*: p = 1.573×10-14
  3. Tyrion/Arya: p = 7.832×10-14
  4. Davos/Stannis: p = 2.028×10-7
  5. Jon/Tyrion: p = 5.601×10-7
  6. Davos/Dany*: p = 1.021×10-6
  7. Arya/Stannis*: p = 8.920×10-6
  8. Jon/Eddard: p = 0.0001133
  9. Tyrion/Jaime: p = 0.0001300
  10. Jaime/Sandor: p = 0.0001950
  11. Davos/Eddard: p = 0.0005006
  12. Arya/Davos: p = 0.0008593

An asterisk marks negative correlations; the others are all positive.

Some of this isn't surprising. I was surprised to see Tyrion correlating with Arya and Jon, though. Another interesting thing is that Arya correlates positively with Davos, but negatively with Stannis, even though Davos and Stannis are positively correlated. I didn't expect either of those relationships.

Something worth noting is that the average of the 45 correlations is .0450, slightly positive. I think this may have to do with the varying lengths of the lists -- people who voted for 20 characters were more likely to vote for everyone than those who only voted for 5. It may be that this simply reflects them liking more characters; but if it is instead only a difference in the way they approached the poll, it may be artificially increasing the correlations.

Let's also check some of the suggestions made earlier:

For example, Jon and Arya tend to exchange first and second place a lot. Its not surprising that they got equal amount of first places. If readers really like Jon (i.e) he is placed in position one, then Arya is almost always on their list and vice versa. Readers either like them both or don't like them both all that much.

This seems to be the case.

On the other hand, my analysis differs from Wilnova's here: Arya and Sansa are slightly positively correlated, at .0718. Jon and Sansa are even more slightly positive, at .0118. That one's actually a little below the average. But neither is significant, even without correcting for multiple comparisons. Overall, it looks like voters' liking of Sansa was largely unrelated to whether they liked Arya and Jon.

Fans of Dany and Jon are rather predictable. If Dany is number one, its hard to find Jon on that list and vice versa.  But more Dany fans did put Jon in their list compared to Jon fans putting Dany on their list :)

Jon and Dany are indeed negatively correlated, but not significantly so. (r = -.0330; p = .2454).

A couple of the lists with Catelyn as number one had Jon missing and vice versa.

Catelyn was outside the top 10, but let's check this one. It turns out Jon and Catelyn are negatively correlated with r = -.0777. A one-tailed test gives p = .0525, just missing our .05 threshold for significance.

That's pretty interesting.

More analysis would be great: what about Asha and Theon fans too?

Theon and Asha are positively correlated with r = 0.1654. I honestly wasn't certain which direction you expected the correlation to go in, so I used a two-tailed test, resulting in p = .0005175, so there is a significant positive correlation between voting for Asha and Theon.

Finally, please tell me if you think I've made an error in my statistical reasoning (or just in my calculations). I pretty much relied on Google to figure out what to do.

Zizoz , thanks for the wonderful analysis!  And displaying the data in a manner that can be easily studied. Very interesting results.

Now, my statistics is slightly rusty, but the correlation coefficient does indicate the degree of correlation, yes? So just looking at the above table, I could do then say that Jon has the highest correlation with Arya, r= 0.3743.

His correlation coefficient with Sansa is 0.0118. For Jon it's the lowest correlation after Stannis, Dany and Sandor and for Sansa the only characters who show a lower correlation are Davos and Stannis.  Overall, even though the result is not significant, I think results do show that fans who like Sansa (And vice versa) do put Jon (And Vice Versa) lower down their lists of favorites. Do you agree?  Additionally while Dany and Sansa show strong correlation with each other, Dany and Jon show a negative correlation. Which would support a lower correlation between Jon-Sansa.

Sansa and Tyrion having a negative correlation is not surprising. Most of the criticisms and dislike I see for Tyrion do come from Sansa fans (On this forum at the least.). I am surprised that she has a stronger correlation with Jaime and Dany as opposed to the Hound, considering all the SanSan shipping.

The negative correlation between Jon and Stannis is surprising. I thought that Stannis going to the wall was when he became more interesting and his interactions with Jon in ADwD were some of the best. I thought Jon fans would like him and vice versa.

Man, Dany's correlation coefficients!!!   She has the strongest correlation with Sansa. Which is surprising considering they are so different as characters in completely different settings. I am guessing it's the whole girl power thing. Not surprised that Dany and Stannis have the maximum negative correlation.

Just looking at the coefficients, I would say that Eddard is the least polarizing character and Dany is the most polarizing character.

Have to chew on this data some more, later. Thanks once again for all the work!

Tyrion and Arya have the second highest correlation in the whole table. Getting sympathy for being outsiders? So it's interesting that  a Tyrion caricature will be set up as antagonist  to the character Arya plays in that

propaganda piece in the Mercy chapter about the evil dwarf.

I don't think we can say there is a relation in either direction.

I can see Dany (as you say, "girl power" could explain it) but Jaime surprises me too.

The negative correlation between Jon and Stannis is surprising. I thought that Stannis going to the wall was when he became more interesting and his interactions with Jon in ADwD were some of the best. I thought Jon fans would like him and vice versa.

Agreed. While the negative correlation is too small to be significant, the data certainly don't suggest a positive correlation, and that's interesting.

Possibly worth noting that Arya and Tyrion, who Jon is strongly positively correlated with, also show negative correlations with Stannis.

While the conclusion seems reasonable, I'm not convinced "polarizingness" can be measured from correlations at all. Consider two hypothetical scenarios:

1. Everyone who votes for Stannis does not vote for Dany; everyone who does not vote for Stannis votes for Dany as their favorite character.

2. Everyone who votes for Stannis places Dany 11th; everyone who does not vote for Stannis puts her 10th.

Both of these would actually result in the same correlation (negative, and without doing the math, I'd guess strongly so), since r is normalized according to the standard deviations of both variables, but in scenario 1, Dany is maximally polarizing, while in scenario 2 she isn't polarizing at all.

Have to chew on this data some more, later. Thanks once again for all the work!

Thank you!
