They are absolutely convinced that doesn't happen in the books despite confirmation it does and the fact that it is really obviously going to happen in Shireen's first book chapter. When they find out R+J= nothing they are not going to believe it either. What do you think "promise me, ned" means? Considering that Ned says he's paid a high price to keep that promise, it must be something significant.
