Sketchy first period again for the Pens but taking advantage of Bobrovsky mishandling the puck behind the net and getting a goal from it was a big time play.

Yeah.  I could do without the slow starts, but they seem pretty unshakeable out there so far.

True, their demeanor has been great, and they aren't letting themselves get baited by the Jackets either. Calvert should get at least 2 games for the cross check and hit and not responding in kind was the right move. The big thing that has been avoided in the first period in both games is that easy early goal Fleury has been known to give up. I think it's been a huge boost to his confidence to keep Columbus off the board early. Being tied and in the lead after being outplayed in the first is an enormous advantage to have in a playoff series as it can deflate the team who is failing to capitalize despite the clearly better play. Columbus has a look of a very frustrated team atm.

How pissed are Pens fans at Calvert after last night?

That's some old school Flyers shit right there. League will come down hard on him most likely.

yeah.  That's pretty clear intent to injure and targeting of the head (twice, even)

Of course the league is a disaster when it comes to discipline, so they will fuck it up.  But there should definitely be some kind of suspension there.

I think getting rid of these guys who show a lack of respect for the safety of other players would go a long way to reducing injuries around the league and sprucing up it's image a bit.

A friend of mine calls Columbus 'Philly Lite' because they try to resemble the Flyers but just aren't as tough to handle. I wasn't surprised by it at all, unfortunately, as they are coached by Torts and that kind of shit is right up his alley. I'm sure he'll say Kuhnackl embellished the hits or some shit like that.

It's definitely not enough IMO, but the NHL doesn't stand alone in terms of giving playoff games a lot more weight re: suspensions.

Fair point, but the blatantly obvious attempt to injure a player twice in the span of a few seconds warrants at least 2 games. Kuhnackl was not near the puck and it's not like it was a borderline hit or something, it was a flat out attack on an unsuspecting player. I think the NHL game has cleaned itself up pretty well over the last few years, but when shit like this happens they should make an example of it.

Ugly looking injury to Roman Polak, legs aren't supposed to bend and twist like that.

Oh, I agree it was extreme.

Yikes on Polak. Our top 3 defense men are injured, though Reily's playing through it, takes away his best tool (speed) and now Zeitsev and Polak...ugh.

I think Matthews is playing hurt. Hasn't looked the same since going down earlier. That said, on the road, I have us winning 4 or 5 of 7 full periods so far this series, which is really surprising. Caps took over last couple minutes of the second last game and that bit plus dominating the 3rd/OT I kinda thought they had our number, but we're at least even regular tine thus game and we've really been controlling overtime. No joy, though. So many chances where we're hitting the walls.
