urizen
Matrim Cauthon (WoT) Tehol Beddict and Bugg (Malazan) Iskaral Pust (Malazan) Shadowthrone (Malazan) Apsalar(Malazan) Rasitlin (Dragonlance) Ebenazar (Dresden Files) Someone I don't get who seem to be high on people's list is Fitz from the Farseer books. My god, What a tool. keeping your word is commendable but not in the face of commmon sense, when it's blatantly used against you. "I'll let selfish, evil Regal commit regicide (fingering me for the crime) steal his brothers throne and torture me brutally but I will not move against him. Oh no, you see, I made vow not to raise my hand against the royal family, this at the mature age of three" Worst. Protagionist. Ever. Regal as the main antagonist isn't much better either. If not for feeling bad for the commoners, I would have rooted for the Raiders and hoped they'd both get killed. Can someone who like the guy explain what's so great about him? The Pita
Every now and then you get a mediocre series that is elevated into a good one by a single character. Raistlin and Drizzt (even though he's emo) are two perfectly good examples. Also, any of Pterry's characters. I just love Vetinari, Vimes, Carrot, Mort, Death, (not Susan), Otto, William, Moist, and who can't love Mr. Teh-ah-tim-eh?

Valkyrja
Wow.....I am realizing that besides the aSoIaF, the Gentemen Bastards, and the typical stuff (LotR, WoT, HP), I can barely recognize most of the fantasy characters people have chosen. Maybe its because I don't read much pure fantasy these days, but it seems like I'm missing a lot of interesting characters! I'll have to check a lot of these series out sometime. I just spent the last few years reading almost nothing but OE and ON medieval texts (for graduate school) and therefore have a lot favs from those. So bear with this rather long list. (I hope its not cheating to use medieval fantasy characters? They're mostly all larger than life, after all. :P) From Beowulf ~ Beowulf ~ Grendel's mother ~ Wiglaf ~ The Dragon From Gawain and the Green Knight: ~ The Green Knight From the Eddas (Old Norse/Germanic myth): ~ Týr ~ Óðinn ~ Sleipnir (can't forget the horses now!) ~ Þórr ~ Baldr ~ Jormungandr (The Midgard Serpent) ~Yggdrasill (trees are characters too of course) ~ Volundr/Weland the Smith (he's just so creepy and vengeful, yet so pathetic) From various legendary sagas: ~ Brynhildr the Valkyrie ~ Sigurdr, the dragonslayer ~ The Jomsvikings ~ Bodvarr Bjarki, the shape-shifter ~ Örvar-Oddr ~ The shieldmaiden Hervor ~ The sword Tyrfing (yes, a sword can be a character!) From The Kalevala: ~ Väinämöinen ~ The smith, Ilmarinen ~ Kullervo, inspiration for Turin Turumbar From the celtic myths: ~ CuChullain, hands down ;) ~ Caer Ibormeith and Aengus Og (Ok, there are a lot more mythic/legendary characters I could list, but I'll move on to modern fantasy....) From Tolkien: ~ Gandalf (so Odinic, I can't help myself) ~ Shadowfax ~ Snowmane (honorary favorite ;) ) ~ The White Tree of Gondor ~ Treebeard and the Ents ~ Turin Turumbar (and his cursed sword, the Mormegil, and his helm, the Dragon-helm of Dor-lomin) ~ Maedhros (I have a thing for flame-haired, one-handed Noldorian lords) ~ Beren One-hand ~ Luthien Tinuviel (especially when she shapeshifts into a creepy bat!) ~ Earendil the Mariner ~ ~ Aragorn son of Arathorn, King Elessar, etc. ~ Faramir :) From Harry Potter (yes I love HP, deal with it!): ~ The Marauders (as a whole) ~ Sirius Black ~ Remus J. Lupin ~ Fred and George Weasley From Juliet Marillier's The Sevenwaters Trilogy: ~ Sorcha ~ Hugh of Harrowfield ~ Finbar ~ Liadan ~ Bran, the Painted Man From The Last Unicorn: ~ Shmendrick the Magician, Last of the Red-Hot Swamies ;) ~ Molly Grue ~ The Unicorn Not really fantasy I suppose, but I also really love Uhtred of Bebbanburg from Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series, and Orm the Bearslayer from Robert Low's The Whale Road and The Wolf Sea. I simply cannot resist well-written Vikings!
