I think they thought it might be neat to see another dead character during a jaunt to the past and they had the actor who played Ethan back for "shock" value and they totally forgot that this would create an inconsistency with Ethan's time on the beach with the Losties... Kate is dynamic and strong and interesting and complex and independent, and that scene when she is on the beach in season 1 is very very hot. Sun is passive and doesn't smile enough. Generally, characters on Lost have become more sympathetic as you learn more about them - or at least more intriguing, in the case of a guy like Ben who it's so easy to hate. It's still cool once we learn more of his motives. Kate, on the other hand, I dislike more the more I learn about her. Her best moments are in the pilot episode. It's all downhill from there.
