    First Quarter 2019 Reading

I started the year by reading 3 SF books. Noumenon by Marina J. Lostetter which I enjoyed enough to buy the sequel. Gate Crashers by Patrick S. Tomlinson which was a rather boring read I must say. Rejoice, A Knife to the Heart by Steven Erikson which I enjoyed a lot. It got only one major flaw. It portrays the president of the USA as someone who listens at least a bit to scientific advisers. But I guess that is a problem a lot of fiction has nowadays.

Most competent people from hunhar Yeah that makes no sense. They need to pay more if they want to keep the competent people in the country. Brain drain in Hungary is incredible because of free movement to other EU countries.
  5. Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich is an awesome game. I got it for free years ago with a game magazine and enjoyed it a lot. I never played the first one though.
  6. There is also a bug with PVP scaling above level 50 which makes high level character non-viable for PVP. You stop getting special points at level 50 and you can have a more or less optimized character at that point. However the damage scaling mechanic seems to become exponential at some point and a level 20 character can one-shot a level 100 character in power armor with the weakest weapon possible while the max. level weapon of the level 100 character does next to no damage to a naked low level character.
  7. As far as I understand the real money is now in microtransactions and mobile games. Minimal effort for a lot of money. That aside I must admit I'm enjoying Fallot 76 more and more. The new real time VATS is great if you focus your build on it and you can have actual builds again(because you get no more special points after level 50)unlike Fallout 4 where you could max. everything. I really disliked the old VATS and never played that much Fallout 3 because of it. NV was the first new Fallout that had ok gunplay Fallout 3 was horrible in that regard. The games PVP balance is completly broken though but I ignored that part of the game anyway. Well someone tried to kill me because I joined an event and stole all the kills. The player could one-hit all enemies with a supersledge but bullets travel faster than a player can walk even if I had to hit a few enemies twice. I fast traveled away and that was it. Melee is fucking OP damagewise right now but enemies apart from the flying endgame enemies can be killed with a good gun build just as quickly and shooting them out of the sky is still faster than waiting for them to land(except for the endgame boss). The bugs are horrible of course but it is more polished than Fallout 4/Skyrim in a way. There are XP and carry weight glitches which ruin it as MP game I guess but I'm not really playing it as one apart from giftig people legendary items my build does not need. People do not realize how easy evading other people is thanks to the random server mechanic. Changing servers takes as much time as a load screen in Fallout 4. I never played a Fallout 4/Skyrim savegame as long as I have played Fallout 76 without encountering a gamebreaking bug which required the console. I got broken quests and shit of course but unmodded Fallout 4 and Skyrim are even worse(my gf plays them unmodded on the console...) .
  8. The engine must have some advantages though. Most other open world games remove corpses and items incredible fast from my experience. That is for single player games though. Rust or ARK: Survival Evolved seem to handle things better at least when it comes to player built structures but those games have an incredible toxic community. The graphics looked good when Oblivion came out and that was more than twelve years ago and Skyrim did not look that bad either when it came out.
  9. I have been playing quite a bit of Fallout 76 and I'm enjoying it a lot. I even had quite a bit of fun with photomode. Too much maybe. Making friends. At the gold course. Playing a bit of music. Getting in touch with my inner raider.
  10. Ah interesting I need to give this game a try. I noticed so many new things playing Dungeon Keeper. I never used to spell which allows you to control creature when I played it as a kid but you can do a lot of stuff with it like going straight to an enemy keeper with an imported level 10 creature which allows you to win some of the early missions incredible quickly,
  11. I'm playing the original dungeon keeper right now. Got it for free from EA(origin) at some point. It uses DOSbox and runs flawlessly on Windows 10 which was a surprise(I can't run the GOG version of a lot of games without downloading extra stuff for example). Still a fun game and surprisingly good UI/controls for such an old game.

Kristallnacht -80 Years Later, How Have We Changed?

The interesting thing is that areas that were really touched by the crisis here in Austria(mainly people on the route the refugees took to Germany) voted more left than the people which were not affected when we elected our current President(the former leader of the green party) in 2016. It was not until last year the things made a real turn for the worse. At a time when most of the refugees from that time were already gone or being integrated. I actually moved to a small city with a refugee camp(well two former hotels) in early 2017 and it felt like the location was picked on purpose by the conservative controlled interior ministry to scare people(about 250 young men and teenage boys with nothing to do in a city of less than 5000 people). Shit happened of course especially on the sexual harassment side of things. It was a really left leaning place before that but not anymore. A few weeks after the current far right government was sworn in the refugees vanished over night...
  13. Tyranny is the modern Obsidian game with the story I liked the best but the combat was not my cup of tea. The combat in the original infinity engine games was great because you could pre-buff your party and stuff would last for a few minor fights or one big boss fight. Mixing rest based spellcasting with cooldowns, short duration spells, no proper pre-buffing and no proper healing spells was a horrible decision imo. Wasteland 2 was a good game in a way but I'm a Jagged Alliance 2 fanboy and no squad based rpg tactic games has ever been as much fun. Although I'm kinda fond of Fallout Tactics.

While I agree with you in principle(a media made crisis) the bold part is not true at all. Most of those asylum seekers entered to EU not just those that were granted asylum. 24,735 applied for asylum in Austria in 2017 for example which is currently only possible if you are already in the country. It used to be possible to do it in an Austrian embassy but our first far right government got rid of that option in the early 2000s. Most that were denied did not leave the EU either because returning them to their home countries is usually a lengthy process and often people who are denied proper asylum are allowed to stay temporary until hostilities in their home countries are over. At least in Austria most people which are deported are deported to other EU countries(because of the Dublin Regulation). Most people denied asylum actually leave Austria voluntarily after receiving no asylum. Usually with destination unknown according to the official statistics. Sometimes they show up in Austria again though.
  15. I got 3 Fallout 76 B.E.T.A friend codes for PC if anyone wants one.
  16. I played quite a bit of Fallout 76 yesterday. I had lots of fun like killing a boss monster at level 5 with one molotov after some randoms monsters softened it up. I noticed a few people running around but we ignored each other most of the time. I joined one event shooting some robots because I was in the area but that was it. The first quest I tried was bugged in good old Bethesda style and I was unable to finish it though. One of my favorite things is still part of the game as I'm finding lots of stuffed animals in funny situations. My ini edits which I copied from the Fallout 4 ini worked and I was able play on my ultrawide screen without problems(the FOV edits worked too). The power armor HUD did not work perfectly though but that was a problem in Fallout 4 too. It is a shitty console port with an ancient engine but I'm not hating it. The only things I dislike so far are the item level restrictions and the low stash size which I maxed out after like 4 hours of play.
  17. I must admit I'm looking forward to Fallout 76. It looks like it requires some ini tweaking to work ok with an ultrawide monitor but I did not really expect Bethesda to improve upon Fallout 4 in that regard. I guess I'm just glad that it is not a console exclusive at this point. I tried RDR2 on the Xbox One X. Great in principle but 24 years of mouse+controller gaming is too much I guess as I can't get used to aiming with a controller and always forgot which bumber button I have to use.
  18. I have been playing State of Decay 2 with my gf. Far from perfect but one of the few XBOX/Windows crossplay games. Too bad Fallout 76 will not offer crossplay because I think it would be the prefect game for us.

And now Barnes & Noble faces the Headman's axe

You're wellcome! Although around here (Linz Austria) I have not really noticed any recent book shop deaths after 2010 or so(before that a lot closed because of amazon I guess). There are still quite a few small book shops in the inner city(plus a Thalia).
  20. Well maybe the EU will fragment or disolve completly in the near future in which case an early exit could be a plus in the long term.
  21. Too bad about telltale. I just finished Batman on the switch and was hoping for more ports. On a sidenote after watching my gf play Fallout 4 I reinstalled the game again. I'm trying a permadeath survival game this time. Might work well for me as I suffer from restartitis. I played about 400 hours since it came out and I have never even entered the institute.

    German politics xth attempt

The CSU is much more right wing than the ÖVP used to be though. However I must admit I get most of my info from quer which is not the most objective source though. Back in the day the CSU seemed to be as about as far right as the old Haider FPÖ(which formed the first ÖVP/FPÖ collation in 2000) and even more conservative on LBGT issues. The current FPÖ is much more extreme though but the current ÖVP is a populist neo-con party and the FPÖ has control of the social conservative side of political discussion(our "Lederhosen-Partei"). Hopefully I'm wrong though.

    German politics xth attempt

Things might go the Austrian way though. A CSU /AFD coalition could happen if a majority is possible. The AFD is the party that has the most in common with CSU after all although they can't say that before the election obviously. Edit: you might coke on your popcorn

September '18 Reading - A Labor of Love

I finished reading Salvation today. I found some of the early chapters a bit boring until things started coming together. Still interesting enough that I'm looking forward to the next book. The characters in Hamiltons books seem the get less interesting with each book he releases though. Maybe it is just because I'm getting older.
