Cricket XXII - A Cook's Tour

Quick end to the innings - six wickets for Stokes. Not many people would be able to say they scored a century and took a five-for in the sames series, he's been the only bright spot on tour so far for England.

Great knock by Smith. I'll eat my hat, at the start of his career I derided him as a bits and pieces player who had no hope of making it as a specialist Test batsman. In this past year though he has now scored three centuries and is rapidly becoming an integral part of that lower-middle order. He's a good player of spin (so is batting in the right position) and also has excellent counterattacking instincts. Him and Haddin make a really good pairing in the batting order. It will be interesting to see how he fares against the pacier South African attack, which will be the real test.

Rankin's in-game injury has really left England in a tough spot. If it weren't for Stokes this innings could have been a disaster. As it is, in the second innings they'll have to get all the overs out of essentially three bowlers - Broad, Anderson and Stokes, plus Borthwick who I think has shown that he isn't a frontline spinner with the amount of full tosses and short balls he served up. Even on an SCG pitch I don't see Cook persisting with bowling Borthwick for long spells. On the positive side their batting should be pretty deep with Borthwick at 8 and Broad at 9.

Don't worry Jeor i wrote Johnston off at the start of the ashes haha.

Though watching the whole aspect of the test the whole England team is like errrrrr. One test defeat and it has destroyed England. Trott well never play again i stake my life on it Swann and KP are both gone even though KP is there his days are numbered and looking at these 3 debs you had today England cricket should be worried. Unless Stoke can become the next Flintoff. England are in for some big big pain

I don't understand. Haddin is 75 years old, Smith is a non-bowling, non-batting all-rounder, Watson could get out LBW while going to the shops, Harris' knees are made of glass and Johnson couldn't find the pitch with GPS, a map and a compass, yet we're going to lose 5-0? Something is amiss with the universe.

It's 4-0. Lol and if that's how you feel England are nothing more then school yard cricketers can't even beat a bunch of old and crippled men. Tsk Tsk

I know it's 4-0, I've been watching. I said it was going to be 5-0.

Apart from that, sounds accurate.

Sad to say This has honestly been some of the best cricket i have seen in ages. Johnston has been better then Shane Warne. It's been a wonderful series lets just say it was the other way around i still would have loved it.

England have just been beaten by a side on home turf and they fall to bits.

I wonder if the Aussies will water the ground after all this is said and done :)

 Like you and many others I have also been surprised at how well this Australian team is playing. That being said, I think it has been a bit of the "perfect storm" for England to face them when so many things have come together at the same time.

Haddin is having a once-in-a-career series, it's unlikely he'll be able to maintain this peak form for an extended amount of time.

Similarly many of the others have been playing at their top form - Johnson and Warner especially. The big question is whether those are sustainable performances.

For that reason I think the South African series is going to be a lot tougher. Can Johnson/Warner/Haddin maintain their form? Will people like Smith be able to face up to an attack? Some of the others in the side are experienced enough that you know roughly what to expect (Clarke, Watson, Siddle, Lyon, and now I'd say Rogers) but there are still quite a few variables. It's just been England's luck that those variables all seem to have hit the positive side in this series.
