jurble
This time with accusations that Russia or Pro-Russians shot it down. I imagine Russia's about to get hit with massive sectoral sanctions.
polishgenius
Well, let's wait for more information to come out before we start off with that.Whatever turns out to have happened though, if it was indeed a rocket attack, from whoever, then I'm absolutely baffled as to the motive, unless they confused the plane with a Russian or Ukrainian one. . Fragile Bird
Business news here have had some experts on who say it must have been a sophisticated radar tracking missile that brought down the plane. And I see jurble's link suggests the same.

Ser Scot A Ellison
I remembered the KAL it was waaay off course in a high security area. I'd forgotten about the US shoot down.
Fragile Bird
I see that people are saying the flight was likely at 30,000 feet, meaning it must have been a SAM, a surface to air missile, if not a military jet that took it down. And comments being made - does Malaysia not know how to run an airline? Why would you choose a flight path over a part of the world where people are shooting down aircraft? Raja
And comments being made - does Malaysia not know how to run an airline? Why would you choose a flight path over a part of the world where people are shooting down aircraft? Yeap, this is what I was wondering to. I'm assuming you would go around, or at least far enough away from it. Seen some photos of debris on twitter, it's awful.
Ser Scot A Ellison
Why are commercial airliners being vectored anywhere close to a combat zone where SAMs are in use?
The Notorious
And comments being made - does Malaysia not know how to run an airline? Why would you choose a flight path over a part of the world where people are shooting down aircraft? That comment is quite condescending unless there's information showing that all other airlines are avoiding that flight path and Malaysian Airline is the only one still using that route. Apparently other airlines are not flying over that area. Now there are 'unconfirmed reports' that Ukrainian rebels announced on social media that they believed they had shot down a Ukrainian air force cargo plane. broken one
It was mistake for sure, but it is said the separatists do not posses missles capable of shooting such plane, so it must have been Russian or Ukrainian army...
Fragile Bird
broken one, they have already shot down two Ukrainian military aircraft with missiles. The FAA warned back in April to alter flight paths, in response to Crimea. eta: The FAA governs US airlines, and US airlines changed any flight paths they may have had. On news right now - Malaysian flight took same flight path a few days ago, so it is likely a usual path for them.
Maltaran
Why are commercial airliners being vectored anywhere close to a combat zone where SAMs are in use? They generally fly higher than shoulder-launched missiles can reach.

Ruin
Yeah, the rebels just announced their max shootdown range is 13,000ft. This, of course, could be misinformation. This will probably turn into another Malaysian Air mystery, only the mystery is who shot it down.

This airplane was much higher than the former two Edit: Russians have sent many various toys to support the sparatists, so who knows
Fragile Bird
So what experts have said on the news here, if it came from the surface it had to be a SAM, otherwise it would have to have been a missile from a military jet. Assuming, of course, it was shot down and didn't just blow up. Since jets don't just blow up by themselves, that would mean a bomb on the plane, presumably. Whether or not the Ukrainian rebels got their hands on a SAM will now be the question, I think.
