Archmaester Drew
Many events and actions led to the War of the Five Kings. Many people played a role: Little Finger, Varys, Illyrio, Tywin, Cersei, Lysa, Catelyn, Doran, etc., etc, etc... Who do you think was ultimately responsible, or was it happenstance? Could the war of succession have been avoided? Thoughts? :)
Ingelheim
Short answer: Jaime, Cersei, Littlefinger, and Tywin. Maybe even Catelyn, if you think kidnapping Tyrion started it all, which is wrong, of course. Someone will give you a far better and longer answer. ETA: I forgot about Lysa. Boarsbane
LF, that slimy bastard set it all in motion when he had Lysa kill Jon Arryn and send that letter.

Big Daddy
I'll go with Littlefinger, when he manipulated Lysa into killing her husband.
Ashkhen
Almost everyone (except for maybe Baelon) was coexisting just fine with the status quo, until Lysa contacted Catelyn about the Lannisters & Jon Arryn was murdered.
Lost Melnibonean
The first overt belligerent act was Gregor's incursion into the Riverlands. He was sent by Tywin. This appears to have been a reaction to Catelyn's capture of Tyrion, which was instigated by Petyr's lie. So, Petyr.
Tyrion the Perfect
Robert's inept reign (a fun guy but a shitty king).
The Wolves
Jaime and Cersei, with Robert, Littlefinger and Lysa in second place. People keep forgetting that Stannis knew about the twincest even without Littlefinger's interference and Lysa's letter Stannis knew. Cersei and Jaime planted the seeds of a succession war and everything went to hell from. Even without the instigators like Lysa and Littlefinger Jaime and Cersei continued to feed the flames in creating incest bastards who looked nothing like Robert Baratheon. akayareal
I would go with Ned for letting Cersei know that he knew the truth of the kids. This caused her to kill the real king and also raise the North up against the throne. If Ned informs Robert, then he could then kill Cersei and put a bounty out on Jaime forcing Tywin to go into open war against the throne. Ned could then call for the North, the Riverlands were already involved, and Robert could call for the power of the Stormlands and the Reach to destroy the Lannisters. Highgarden could place themselves on the throne with offering Margaery to Robert. No war of the 5 Kings, the entire Westeros could then focus their strength on the wall. Pod The Impaler
Thoughts? :) If I have to blame one person as its root cause, I would say Cersei: cuckolded the king, planted false princes on the throne, all of which was backed by acts of treason, murder & attempted murder, deception and manipulation. She also made Joffrey into the monster he was. Varys and Littlefinger may have worked their schemes to subvert the realm and bring it to conflict anyway, but why was it this war with these players, sides, and causes? Cersei. akayareal
She was probably already trying to have Robert killed before Ned went and told her he knew. Im sure she was, but knowing that Ned was going to blow the whistle as soon as Robert got back forced her hand to move her plans up. Robert finds out, and no Jamie in the city, her head would be on one of the city gates.

Good Guy Garlan
Littlefinger, mostly. He wanted to start a war, and Jaime and Cersei gave him the perfect excuse for one, but he's so clever that he would have found something else to set people at each other's throats regardless
Archmaester Drew
Is it Robert's fault for not securing a legitimate heir? Surely he knew Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen were not his? (Or should have.) ;)

Stannis was most likely tipped off. *cough*LF*cough* Stannis lived thirteen years around Joffrey, and 8 or so years with all of Cersei's kids. Why did he randomly become suspicious almost ten years into Tommen's life? Littlefinger is the main cause, though of course Jaime, Cersei, Robert, Ned, Stannis, Lysa, Tywin, Catelyn, Renly, Gregor and Robb didn't help matters.
