Curethan
Big publishers are, yes. A small one like Overlook probably uses its Facebook and Twitter and that's about it. Publishing in general has been slow to respond to how social media works and in fact has encouraged its authors to get out there and engage directly. Well, given Bakker's tainted internet image and general awkwardness on social media, I guess this situation isn't that surprising. Kind of funny how the fringe of the discussion on women in fantasy only managed to torpedo one of the few book series that actually initiated interesting dialogue on gender roles and attitudes. Maybe Bakker should have thrown in with the Sad Puppies - or perhaps his brand of woman-hating pornography sickens even them. Oh well, perhaps we could maximize and then offer the traffic metrics for various fan-sites where people are admin. e.g. - register (if your not already a member) on TSA and make a couple of posts - metrics are freely available here You can see for example that page views there are doubled over last year, so interest is picking up - I assume Westeros has similar tools where you could extract some interesting data on the plethora of Bakker threads, don't know if that is considered confidential though. - sub to r/bakker on reddit. I see they have 280 subs there atm, perhaps the mod there could supply more interesting facts. r/fantasy has a lot more subs (around 80,000) perhaps we could encourage the Bakker to do an AMA there? That could be glorious cluster-fuck. - let the publishers know about the hard work fans have put into the wikia, which looks fantastic and shows off a lot of the great fan art. If we could get covers from Spiral Horizon that would be such a bonus :D That's about it for ideas from me though.
kuenjato
I actually really like the care Overlook has put into the hardcovers for the series, shame I can't add a sixth volume anytime soon. The situation is pretty clear at this point, though. They're understaffed and are concentrating on the current load; books turned in late get shuffled way down the cycle with the limited resources at hand. I hope for a late 2016 release, by this point. Maybe by that point Bakker will have published his new sci-fi novella to tide us over.
lokisnow
Too bad Bakker refuses to participate in the genre community, cause he could be leveraging comic con right now.
Darth Richard II
Some days I wonder if Bakker is a real person.

Ser Scot A Ellison
Why does Bakker refuse to participate in the "Genre" community?
Darth Richard II
Dunno. He seems very anti social media. To be fair uh, his treatment when he was on here wasn't too good, allegedly. (I was not around). Plus that whole ROH thing was a mess.
lokisnow
By which I mean cons and panels, short stories in anthologies, and so on. But having only realized recently overlook doesn't do other genre, I think bakkers failure to get involved in all that stuff probably stems from overlook ignoring all the cons and not having any in house referrals for anthologies and zines.I've complained about this before, but now think it's unfair, it's another overlook failure, not bakkers. So I shouldnt have whinged earlier
Kat
I thought I remember reports of him going to a con and attending a BWB party. :dunno: That was before he has a case of foot in mouth disease while posting here under a pseudonym, so maybe we did put him off fandom. Humble AK
Yeah, I remember the epic debate between him and others on this board regarding feminism. It's a long time ago, so I don't remember it very well, but as far as I recall the only real faux pas Bakker committed was using his Gravity Rainbow sockpuppet to praise R Scott Bakker. He very shortly thereafter admitted to his real identity, but it was too late. With that and his rather controversial (but interesting and thoughtful) position on feminism, a lot of people treated him like he'd personally murdered their kitten. Not everyone acted that way, but certainly enough people did. Bakker himself was very cordial, but I suppose online he comes off as arrogant, which further inflames people. From my perspective, I wouldn't blame anyone for avoiding fans. Fandom does strange things to people who are otherwise normal. It seems to either make them sickeningly unctuous, or really self-entitled and douchey. Obviously I'm not saying that applies to everyone, but I do see it affect many, many people. There's just no sense of self awareness or self-regulation in them. It's a peculiar thing. Ran
Bakker has attended a number of conventions and literary festivals. I think he met George at Semana Negra in Spain, for example. Maybe his opinion on such things has changed, or maybe it's just that his circumstances have changed and he can't attend them as he once did. If Overlook isn't even bothering to assign an editor to his book, it's highly doubtful they're springing the coin for him to travel 1000's of miles to attend conventions. Madness
Oh man, I'd love to party with RSBIt's pretty laid back ;). But he's clearly a retired bruiser and the stories some of his friends tell from back in the day... RSB, circa late eighties was probably an animal. Kalnestk Oblast
If Overlook isn't even bothering to assign an editor to his book, it's highly doubtful they're springing the coin for him to travel 1000's of miles to attend conventions. Most authors aren't being paid by their publishers to go to conventions. Either the convention is giving them a stipend to attend or they're coming on their own coin because it's the way to generate a lot of publicity. Publishers will do book signing tours and whatnot - but not typically convention circuits, as far as I know.
Sci-2
Why does Bakker refuse to participate in the "Genre" community? He's given multiple interviews to Pat, and has attended conventions. I think some of the convention stuff was before his daughter was born, so that might eat into his schedule. Dunno. He seems very anti social media. He has twitter and facebook accounts. I mean they're kinda weird but he does have them.
