First Bran chapter in TWOW

Recommended Posts

We know that George plans to open TWOW with the cut of chapters (the battles) from ADWD. We also know that there was a Bran chapter cut from ADWD (per the Texas A&M collection). So where do we think Bran's first chapter will fall?

Bran, now, has a power that could spoil the story-I'm sure George is struggling to set rules for Bran's abilities- and therefor we'll see little of him through out the book. I guess Bran's first chapter will be closer to the half point of the book than the beginning.

I expect that Bran will be the last character to have a first chapter in TWOW (not counting Jon). Therefore, I expect to see the eleven sample chapters, ten or more complement chapters (including ones from other characters in the same location) to complete the four battles, Dany, Melisandre, Sam, Brienne, Jamie, Cerise, Davos, and Areo before we get the first Bran chapter.

What do y'all think?

I expect brans chapters to either start in the middle or the end of tWoW depending on which direction Big G decides to take the book.

he definitely could be pivotal to the story and could easily influence the other characters (like he did for theon)

His chapters will probably be in the second half of the book.

If TWOW is released in two volumes (fingers crossed), I expect Bran to be the last chapter of the first volume.

By "two volumes" do you mean split the book up like some copies of ASoS and ADwD was? There is no doubt that is going to be the case. With how much stuff he needs to cover, I cant see him making the whole book the size of AGoT, ACoK, or AFfC.

I hope it is longer than ASOS and ADWD, but yeah split the book into two volumes like ASOS and ADWD.

By having a Bran as the last chapter of the first Vol, George can give us a retrospect on the events of that Vol plus some other juicy secrets.

Seems like a cool idea, but if the book did get split in two then both books surely would still be released at the same time, so what difference does it make what chapter the first book ends with.

Bran will set the stage for the latter half of the story. Ending the first half with Bran does exactly that.

The two volumes approach is a publisher’s choice as I understand it, and is usually done for practical reasons (I.e. size of the book). It’s only stuff getting cut from the final product (the now infamous DwD chapters) that GRRM gets involved I think

Pray for a big fat book that can not be published in one tome.

I'll be OK with one Bran chapter of it is a huge book.

Somehow I don't think this will happen. There are a few story lines that need some catch up before getting into the battles. Bran among them, because a lot of time passed since his last chapter. But I agree that we won't see many Bran chapters in TWOW. At the most three.

Within the 10 first chapters

My guess is we will have there Alyane (Sansa I), a couple of Sam chapters (we need some world building in Oldtown and many things need to happen there), Davos (a lot of time passed since we saw him last in WH), maybe a JonCon chapter and the Arianne I & II, maybe Theon I, etc.  After come the battles.

Indeed. I think Bran chapters will be devoted to discover things of the past and to how their newly acquire abilities will transform his personality.

I certainly don't think Bran will open the book but I feel it will come before halfway because his story will simply have to move along.  Brans not going to stay in the cave, he will travel back south via gornes way, otherwise that would just be a huge chekovs gun not being used.  But that travel will still be slow and has to start at some point reasonable enough that Bran could return to WF before the WW's.

Do we have anything approaching a timeline for how far ahead/behind the various Starks & arcs are relative to each other?

Dany/Tyrion/Barristan/Victarion

Arya

Jon/Mel

Bran

Stannis/Theon/Asha

Sansa

Brienne/UnCat

Jaime

Jon Con/Arianne

Sam

Davos

This is a useful and, imo, well researched resource

In the interests of fairness/disclosures, it’s fan made. But you can find discussion of any issues/contentions in the relevant thread

Bran might have the very first POV chapter in Winds, after the Prologue. (The Prologue will be set at Casterly Rock, with Sybell Spicer-Westerling as POV. When she tells her daughter Jeyne Stark about the love potions she gave to Jeyne and Robb, Jeyne will push her over the edge of the Rock to her death.)

We haven't had a Bran POV since the halfway point in Dance. He's had enough time to train. Thematically, he is one of the three most important characters in the story - he is Ice to Dany's Fire, while Jon is Ice and Fire Combined. It's time for him to take up his role.

The scene is simple - it picks up immediately after Jon passes out. A single horn blast is heard - Ranger Returning. It's Benjen, escorting Bran, Meera, and Hodor. It could be told from Bran's POV, or from Mel's.

I think Bran will feature sooner in the text as well.  While he certainly can be used to reveal a lot of things, I tend to think of him and his powers in the same regard as Google - yes, he has access to a wealth of knowledge, but he has to know where to look for it. So, I don't think it is as cut and dry - as far as spoilers and him knowing too much.

Then why has Bran been so ignored by GRRM if he's the Ice, Dany's the Fire and Jon is the Song of them both.

For such a pivotal character, Bran has had precious few chapters compared to Arya, Tyrion and Jon. Precious few. Like when was the last time he had five POV chapters to his name?

Even though I don't slate him as arriving in Winterfell until the beginning-ish of A Dream of Spring, I think we're going to need a lot of Bran chapters in this book. It's the penultimate book and we need a lot of things to happen for the conglomerate climax of the story and Bran is the only one who can divulge this information.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I am an infrequent visitor here anymore. But to answer your question-

At the end of Clash, GRRM had published 14 Bran POV chapters. At that point, that was only 1 less than Dany or Arya, only 3 less than Jon, and only 4 less than Catelyn. Tyrion led at 24.

The reasons for the dearth of Bran chapters are twofold. 1 - Bran is the toughest POV for GRRM to write, being the youngest and the most involved with magic. 2 - The abandonment of the Five Year Gap forced GRRM to put all three Stark kids on the shelf during FeastDance as they aged and trained. Not to mention that GRRM may be keeping Bran offstage for dramatic reasons during the last half of Dance.

Note - Although Bran only had 3 POV chapters in Dance, his voice appears in three Theon chapters.

Note Note - Songs are Power. Dany sings the Song of Fire, as all Valyrians did. Being a Stark, the former Kings of Winter, Bran will sing the Song of Ice, although he is being trained by Earth Singers. Jon will sing the Songs of both Ice and Fire, once he learns of his ancestry. He is the balance point between the two.
