Maltaran
Moving Broad up the order there is a good idea, give him a couple of overs to slog before the new ball

ljkeane
Bloody hell, I thought Woakes was out there. Anyway, I wasn’t expecting that. Fantastic effort from Woakes and Buttler to drag England back into it and a great test overall.

Mosi Mynn
Brilliant from Buttler and Woakes. Buttler was under enormous pressure for his place and was still innovative and attacking - and he was aware that he had to get runs quickly before the new ball could be unleashed against the lower order - great cricketing brain. williamjm
I thought England had a chance, but I wouldn't have picked a big partnership between Buttler and Woakes as the most likely route to victory. They've both struggled a bit with the bat over the last years or so but they really played well today. Pakistan didn't seem to bowl particularly badly or making glaring mistakes in the field although I've heard some criticism of the tactics. They must also be regretting their low third innings total which in retrospect is where the game was really lost. It was a very good Test with big swings of momentum. Hopefully the rest of the series will produce more of the same.
ljkeane
Pretty much the entire commentary team on Sky were making the point that Pakistan missed a trick by not going at Woakes with a barrage of short balls early. I they were probably right. Woakes in general is a very capable batsman but he looked very ropey when Australia adopted those tactics against him. Yes, I think this was where Pakistan really tripped up. When you get a 100+ run lead, you really have to ram it home but Pakistan let England back into the game with their poor second innings and this is where they lost the game. Great job by Buttler and Woakes to guide England to victory.
williamjm
Ben Stokes is going to miss the rest of the series because he is flying to New Zealand for family reasons. It's fortunate for England that Buttler and Woakes seem to have some good batting form now to make up for some of the loss of batting. Presumably Crawley will return at number 3 to fill the place, but Stokes is a difficult player to replace.
Mosi Mynn
We'll miss him. Thoughts are with his family. Does he have to quarantine at the Kiwi end? He should be OK coming back, at least.

This has become harder to secure since two young women were released on compassionate grounds, only to later test positive for CV-19.

He'd probably have to be in isolation for a few days if he was going to come back into the team bubble again although it doesn't look like he's going to play any more this summer. I suppose as well as Crawley another possible replacement could be to bring in Ben Foakes and have Buttler plays as a specialist batsman.
Xray the Enforcer
The United States has both a major and minor cricket league. The minors are starting to play this fall and the majors sometime in 2021. I cannot see this succeeding in the long run, but I look forward to lots of terrible T20 cricket in my very own timezone. ljkeane
How have we lost play to rain? It’s cracking the flags everywhere else in the UK. That’s what you get for taking the cricket away from sunny Manchester I suppose. I’m glad to see England have at least got a sort of all rounder into the side in Curran rather than just going with five bowlers. Having said that I’m a little surprised they didn’t go with one of the pacier options of Archer or Wood in the side.
williamjm
I've seen some unusual stances over the years but nothing exactly like Fawad Alam's. He does apparently have one of the highest first class averages of all time so starting off each ball standing square-on to the bowler wide of the leg stump must be working for him, but it is a bit inexplicable. Yeah, it looks bizarre, doesn't it? It's the sort of stance you see people come up with if they've never played Cricket before. My suspicion is that it looks so weird to the bowler that it puts them off. Didn't seem to help him in the first innings here though... ST

Hereward
Ah cricket, it’s comforting that we can still manage to fit rain affected Test matches in between long periods of drought and record breaking temperatures.
ljkeane
And the start is delayed again. Jesus. Seriously, if they'd just stayed in Manchester I don't think we'd have lost any play so far. It's not like it makes much difference with there being no crowds in anyway.
