West-German pornography doesn't count you maudlin fascist :P

I'd hate to see your East Germany youth.

I didn't know Portrait of a Lady on Fire was a foreign language film. But it's always nice to hear some French. It's a beautiful language, even if I sucked at learning it despite spending four years of having to.

it’s taken me months to get through the Witcher and that is odd because I do sort of enjoy it. I think Cavil is great in the role...

I sat through the first episode. There were many annoying things about it. And I strongly didn't want to watch another episode after that. Now months later, I realise that I have no desire whatsoever to watch anymore. :)

That's how I felt about Cursed.  I'd have to be paid to watch Ep. 2

I will def. watch the next season of The Witcher.  Its main weakness, outside of Cavil's hideous wig(s), is that they really failed to flesh out the antagonists and the big picture back story, we don't get much sense of what is so bad about Nilfguard, why they went rogue, why Fringilla broke her mage vows and broke bad, or even why Cintra also went rogue, presumably there was more reason than the queen being an arrogant person given to drunken ranting.  If they had spent a little more time on this part of the world building everything else would have much more resonance.

On the fourth season in my rewatch of Lost. On the one hand, the rewatch experience is lessened because you know a lot of character arcs and plot points aren't really going anywhere, and you know that some of what's happening just makes no sense in light of the ultimate answers provided in season 6.

Spoiler

Most notably, half of the things involving the smoke monster; anything with Jacob's cabin; what exactly the Others are up to when they're not doing fertility experiments.

On the other hand... This could be such a great show on a week to week basis, with a combination of strong character work and acting, sci-fi/fantasy/horror weirdness, and twisty goodness. An episode like The Constant is such a unique and powerful achievement, and I don't know if I've seen anything on TV since then that's managed to recreate that blend of mindfuckery and emotional resonance at once.

The fact that Lost — a heavily serialized story with supernatural undertones — survived at all on network television is a minor miracle, but people forget that spectacular first season (which won the Best Drama Series Emmy award) consisted of 25 episodes. Or, as co-creator and showrunner Damon Lindelof told me during a recent exclusive interview as part of our Collider Connected series, “that’s like the entire duration of The Leftovers.”

Those first two seasons were sooo good. It could have been an amazing show if they'd narrowed the focus and had an end date from the start.

Anyway despite being a big horror fan I realized the only Nightmare on Elm Street movie I'd ever seen was Freddy Vs. Jason. They all seem to be on HBO max so I'm gonna watch them until they get like Jason X bad. The first one was quite good for what it was, I thought.

Oh yeah, I recognize that a lot of the weaknesses of the show are because of network TV pressures. IMO, season 2 is one of my least favourites; here's where you really see them stretching everything out, introducing new characters and mysteries that they don't know what to do with and then killing them off/ignoring them soon after... Though again, I know some of that wasn't their fault, but having to deal with stuff like

Spoiler

The Eko actor wanting off the show

I'm not at season 6 yet, but it's there that I think the writers messed up more. Seasons 3.5-5 really feel coherent and build off each other, moving at a much faster pace too; and then for some reason season 6 basically focuses on a completely new story that doesn't integrate most of what's happened in the past few seasons. It feels like they had an overall plan and then changed it up for the last season. Though maybe my opinion will change as I move into rewatching the end of the show.

All this reminds me that I still need to watch The Leftovers at some point...

Lost never did it for me, I gave up some time during season 2? could even have been season 1, because I had a strong feeling that the show was just doing stuff and there was going to be no through line, which turns out to have been correct.

Have to admit I'm a bit sorry I missed out on the week-to-week theorizing/speculation that the internet loved about the show during its original airing - I didn't start watching the show until, like, a week before the series finale.  But I have to say over the years Lost is one of my favorite shows to binge, it lends itself well to that.  Plus, as you tire of the flashbacks getting repetitive definitely at least by season 3, or the pointless sideways storyline of the final season, you can just fast forward.  Usually can rewatch the entire series fairly quickly this way considering the actual runtime of all the episodes.

I don't have much of a problem with most of the later seasons - at least certainly not as much as the broad consensus - other than the sideways storyline and the first half of season 3.  And yes, The Constant is one of my favorite episodes of television ever.  The phone conversation at the end makes me cry all 50 some odd times I've seen it.

Lost

So I've seen a bit of season one, and it was all great, but I always here it gets pretty meh, though at the same time you're too invested to quit.

Just tell me, does it get anywhere near Dexter in regards to its decline?

As a fan of both shows who's seen each multiple times, I have to say not even close IMO.  The last 3 seasons of Dexter went from bad to absurd by the end.  I understand why people think the last season of Lost is a letdown, and it pretty objectively is to an extent - but seasons 4 and 5 are at least fairly solid in my book and I actually really enjoy the second half of season 3 (although the first half gets really boring/uninteresting).  I also think a lot of the rancor towards the ending is because the story did not answer all of the plethora of mysteries they presented throughout the series.  Well that's fair, it's rather ridiculous to expect the show was going to explain everything, and I think they did a solid job of explaining most of the primary questions raised from the beginning (with one certain glaring exception I won't mention because I don't wanna spoil it for you).

I think I quit around season 4. The first season was great, the second season was also pretty damn good

Spoiler

Such a shame Mr. Eko wanted to leave the show. I really loved that character

but after that it went downhill fast. Glad that I bailed when I did, although one day I should probably put in the effort and read the ending on Wikipedia.

Despite my later misgivings with it however, I still think the Lost pilot is the finest opening episode of any series I have ever seen and a strong contender for the best episode of TVI have ever seen as well.

Yeah, Mr. Eko was a really great character.  Also a shame Michelle Rodriguez drank too much so they killed off Ana Lucia - I liked her character as well.  Libby?  Meh..

This is kind of the impression I've gotten. That you spend so much time emotionally involved with so many characters, and then it just declines and ends with a thud.

I've seen her do a couple interviews over the past few years.  Seems to be a terribly hilarious person and looks like she's got it under control now.  Definitely was not trying to judge - I'd be quite the hypocrite for criticizing anybody for drinking too much.
