The Anti-Targ
4 hours ago, Werthead said: That seems likely. Johnson's behaviour is quite strange in that it's not very Tory-like, and in fact his ideas and measures seem to look a lot like massive socialism to some Conservatives. They were giving him leeway because of the sheer scale of the crisis and clearly the government and state mechanisms were needed to deal with it, but as it's gone on they seem to be looking more and more askance at the ideas coming out of Number 10 and scratching their heads. What's saving Johnson at the moment (aside from personal loyalty from a lot of the new Tory MPs from Labour strongholds who might feel they're on borrowed time) is that no one else seems to have a better idea, or even any other ideas. I would have thought the main thing that's saving him is no one wants to become leader before the full Brexit consequences are being experienced by everyone and Johnson (and Cummings) can take whatever blame they can't effectively foist onto the EU. If Brexit ends up turning out swimmingly, if enough Tories still want to get rid of Johnson they still have the COVID incompetence to hang him with. "Well done on Brexit old bean, we always knew it would be a winner, but you really shit the bed on COVID, so you just have to go I'm afraid." I guess when some MPs first get in they assume there will never ever again be a govt run by the opposition party. And I guess even some veteran MPs have the same delusion every time they get back into govt. Though at this moment (or rather back in December 2019) one could almost forgive Conservative MPs for being giddy about finally becoming the permanent govt of the UK, because all meaningful opposition appeared to be in its death throes. What a difference a little pandemic and [probably] making a complete cluster of Brexit makes.

Tbf the Brexiteers didn't want Brexit and 'take back control' to mean the government enjoys more power with respect to Parliament.: it just turned out that way. They approached their victory in the referendum in an incredibly jumpy, paranoid kind of way, which led them to support the government over Parliament because they felt May and then Johnson were carrying out 'the will of the people.' It was self-serving spurious rubbish , the sort of thing you get when your politics is based around anti-elite paranoia (with remainers/judges etc cast as the elite). But anyway, my point is, I don't think enhanced executive control is what they wanted. I think that was only the case in specific circumstances. I wouldn't assume that they're favour of it any more now that Brexit is over the line.

Which Tyler
After spending the last few weeks telling the whole world that were going to deliberately and knowingly break the law, we now seem surprised that the EU is taking legal action against us. I'm sure we hold all the cards again though. Mind, I'm not sure how useful cards are when we seem to be playing Russian Roulette... without taking any of the bullets out. I'm going to assume now that her house will be camped outside for weeks, her drive way defaced and her kids harassed? That is standard procedure isn't it? Of course all subsequent outbreaks in Scotland can be blamed on her as well.

But I don't think any of the other big lockdown cases actually had the disease and deliberately went to a packed room or got on a train? Cummings drove north in his car and at least says he didn't stop, so this is a lot worse.

And I don'T believe whataboutism is ever a good argument. SNP is not the Tory party, so you should expect them to do the right thing. And how can the SNP credibly nail the Tories on the CUmmings stuff, if she is allowed to stay?
