"I just bought" - Volume II

I was in Philadelphia yesterday for the Philly Film Fest, and made some cool finds at a used bookstore:

The Physiognomy by Jeffrey Ford

The Book of Skulls by Robert Silverberg

The Extremes by Christopher Priest

Galactic North by Alastair Reynolds

This Forsaken Earth by Paul Kearney

Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber*

* Not sure what came over me. I picked it off the shelf and thought, "This looks really, really cheesy." Then I saw the multiple six pages of maps in the front and let out an ironic chuckle. Yet it was somehow going through the checkout before I knew what was going on :stunned:

Excellent! Well, not excellent, but once the book goes out of print apparently the rights revert to the author within 2-5 years (depending on the contract), and that's when the series can be reprinted by Solaris and finished off.

However, the paperback only came out a few months ago, so there should be plenty of stock floating around in bookshops and perhaps online.

Yevgeny Zamyatin's "We".

and

Michael Moorcock's "Elric". Haven't yet read any Moorcock so thought this was a good place to start and Gollancz have published it in a funky new cover as part of their Ultimate Fantasy Series.

My ARC of Neuropath arrived through the post. I also picked up Dan Simmons' Hyperion, Jim Butcher's Storm Front and Walter Jon Williams' The Praxis from the second-hand store, which has upped its SF section considerably in the last few weeks.

I wheedled and looked abashedly humble at my favorite London bookstore today and was able to get the new edition of Rita Monaldi and Francesco Corti's Imprimatur which wasn't on shelves yet because I want to see what the CD that comes with it is like. Only to realize I won't have access to a cd player for about nine days yet.

Also picked up some Nigel Tranter in great condition , used, that I was missing from my collection.

Otherwise that is it. For today at least.

Received a couple of arcs that look interesting:

Andrew Davidson's The Gargoyle -- wasn't expecting this one but with a little research it seems this is going to get a big push. Some of the hype seems a bit over the top but I'm looking forward to reading this. As it doesn't come out though until the latter half of the summer, I probably won't read this until my first real vacation as I have a lot of June and July books still staring at me in offended neglect.

The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng an arc that I passed on when the group received it, it has since made its way back to me looking rather battered. The book should be out soon and I really like to read a new book with little to no inference from others so I'll probably push this up a bit in the "to read" pile. Especially considering the critical acclaim it seems to have already received.

The Dragon's Lair by Elizabeth Haydon. The latest in her Journals of Ven Polypheme books. A young adult series. I was surprised at the first book in the series. I'm not a fan of Haydon's adult fantasy work much at all and I thought she did much better and created a rather interesting setting and plot with the YA approach. Second book though was a backsliding effort as it felt forced and rather insignificant. Very much paint by the numbers when it wasn't just phoned in. It lacked much of what made the first book enjoyable. So I might give this a pass entirely and leave it up to our rading group moderators that tend to focus mainly on the YA books.
