Joe Abercrombie the Blade Itself II

Don't count on it, Brahm. They're still out in full force even in Last Argument of Kings.

Damn it. Still, I'm willing to forgive it because in BTAH, Joe subverts a modern line, changing it into "I need that like I need a dose of the cock rot" instead of the clap. In fact, the phrase "cock rot" has been used twice so far. Awesome.

I got a surprise email from Amazon.com today telling me that my order for Before They Are Hanged had shipped... funny, I didn't even remember ordering it! Must have ordered it when I got The Blade Itself. Usually, I don't go for the order now/ship later school of thought... so it caught me completely off guard!

Good thing too, I just finished a book last weekend and was kind of wallowing in the "What do I read now?" funk.

You probably did it because of the subliminal messages hidden in Joe's posts telling you to order the next book from Amazon ;)

The latest issue of SFX has an article in which Joe discusses why A Game of Thrones is so awesome. Myself and KCF got quoted in the comments section as well!

Damn, what a pleasant surprise - I had forgotten all about it.

Argh! Damn you, mail service! When will you become instantaneous?

I really liked the first issue of SFX this year (I've never read the magazine before I got a subscription as a wickedly cool Christmas present) and have been jonesing for more ever since. It should turn up any day now, though. Or else, you know, I may have to resort to extreme measures. I'm just saying.

Good to hear that the Abercrombie article is worth the read. Hopefully the sequel will be even better :P:leaving:

I'm hearing that Abercrombie originally nominated an obscure novel called The Blade Itself (2006) as the book he wanted to write up about, but this was declined for various reasons that are too complex to go into now :P

This brings up an interesting point. The US edition of Before They are Hanged is shipping from amazon as of today, more than a month ahead of the publication date. That's right, you can order it RIGHT NOW. I say this not for me, of course, but as a kind of disinterested public service. I've got too much heart. Always have had.

I didn't think it was possible to be less subliminal than my posts telling people to buy my next book.

Apparently some bloke called George RR Martin had already reserved The Blade Itself to talk about in the next issue of SFX.

Yeah, right.

so, what did I say?

/threadjack

Actually, I can quote this because it's what you said in the open forum:

"Wolves, kids, incest, politics, secrets, midgets, betrayal, kings and queens, stark landscapes, past wrongs, feudal misgivings, secret keeper, rotten heirs, cold, noble knight, naive hand, vague threats from the north, dragon mother, bastard child...oh, did he just die?"

Were you drunk when you posted this? :P It lacks your normal reviewing coherence!

Is it possible to link that? If not, I insist you type the whole thing in a post with no errors.

This would make baby Dave Bradley (SFX editor who I met - for about thirty seconds - last year) cry tears of copyright-infringing litigation. And it's a magazine. The book club results generally aren't posted online either. I suppose we could ask SFX for permission to reprint the article but they'd probably want us to wait a fair while before doing so.

Is it on news stands yet?

It is.

In the UK and Ireland. I know some specialist comic stores in the USA import it as well. The one you're after is issue #167 and has a Heroes cover.

It's actually the best issue of the magazine for about two or three years. There's a huge interview with Iain M. Banks in there which is nearly worth the cover price alone.

Seeing this, I had to check my email, and I got one, too! THE BOOK IS ON ITS WAY! (does happy dance!!!!!!!!!!!!)

It's been two days since the estimated delivery day, and no sign of BTAH...this saddens me, as I don't want to have to try to figure out where $30 worth of book went wrong someone between Britain and Maryland. Especially a book raved about such as this one.

I got it today and all but devoured it in one sitting. There's just so much juicy stuff in SFX that one could go nuts for a lot less. The Abercrombie article was quite good too, and I imagine that it'll help recruit more followers to aSoIaF, and consequently this board.

I also noticed that SFX rated "Matter" by Iain M. Banks 5.0/5 stars. Also promising was the fact that the first issue of Joe Hill's new comic "Locke & Key" got a perfect score, too. I'm seriously psyched to get my filthy hands on both of these. :pirate:
