Sparks
FWIW, periodically the board has enough traffic that PHP-FPM asks for more RAM than it's allowed to cache things. Previously, that usually meant that we'd hit the Varnish Spiral of Death in a bit and I would need to prod Varnish, but with the fix I made last week that doesn't happen anymore. What *does* happen is those warnings show up; they are annoying but do not actually break the board, and will usually go away again as traffic dies down and PHP-FPM manages to free up caches. (I can also manually flush everything away and thus clear up the issue, which I have just done.) I am looking into a patch to ensure that PHP-FPM can handle the situation on its own in the future. :)

Queen of Winter
Just wanted to know if anyone else was having problems with the board notification list? I haven't been getting notifications (the little red tags) when I've been quoted in other users posts, for about the last week....
Alia of the knife
Not getting my notifications either. I take it Westeros is off Comcasts Christmas list again?
Sparks
Well, that was less than fun. Somehow, the CMS on which the main Westeros site (not the forum or wiki) runs ate its own tail, to the point that I had to actually reboot the server to get it responsive again. Things should be fine now, but I've installed some software to see what the heck happened there.

Stannis Eats No Peaches
For quite a long period today the site refused to load saying "404 internal server error" or something like that. Also, when I refreshed it this one time, this popped up:"An error occured with the SQL server:This is not a problem with IP.Board but rather with your SQL server. Please contact your host and copy the message shown above."I'm no computer expert, so what does it mean? Is there something wrong with my iPad? Angalin
The SQL server is the database that stores all the threads and linked information, and it's big and complicated. When it's not responding properly to queries, there are a few different messages you might get including a guru meditation one.
smithy
I have a strange issue but I don't know if anybody else has reported it and haven't used search (since I don't even know what I'd search for) .Almost every time I read a post by Administrator Westeros it has strange symbols in some of the words , here's an example -The second official trailer for Game of Thrones is now out. Quite a lot of new stuff here—including Tormund Giantsbane speaking, some quick looks at Daario Naharis, and more:Must find time to screencap…For example what does here— mean? and how do I fix this as it doesn't seem to happen to anybody elses posts other than Westeros's
Ran
Yes, unfortunately there's a mismatch between the encoding of our RSS feed (from which those posts are automatically drawn) and the forum, hence the weird characters.

Bran Swift
Hi,Was just curious if anyone else has problems with the board going offline? Most days around midnight GMT +0 I get a 404 error when I try to connect to the forums. It's usually gone about an hour later. Is that just normal maintenance you guys are doing, or something on my end? It's only this site that I can't access, of course.
Ran
Yeah, we've been running into some sort of recurring server overload that locks things up. We're working on making that less likely to happen going forward.
Ygrain
I see some people up there not getting alerts - I was getting them just fine until two days ago, when the site was offline for me most of the day (error 404). Then, shortly, they started coming after I unfollowed and started following again, but since yesterday evening, nothing again. Is this a general problem, or something I can fix in my settings? Since the big outage yesterday (which forced me to go out and socialise in the real world :angry2: ) I've not got any email alerts. My web alerts are working though,
