Were there any characters you hated in the books but really liked in the HBO show?

Recommended Posts

Apparently we have the same sources; that is, things that exist and are easily googled.

Her background is relevant in that her line delivery and mannerisms are indicative of most porno's (that X-Files one is surprisingly deece) and her nationality is relevant because her accent is distracting and at times indecipherable for non Turkish-Americans.

What is irrelevant is her Illustrious, award-winning career, because in the context of this show, the one we are discussing, it means....fuck all.

She's not Turkish, she's German. She may have Turkish heritage but her accent is definitely German. I know that because she's supposed to be from Lorath and the guy who played Jaqen is German too. Yet I notice you're not shitting on him either. In fact, is there not a line also from Cersei where she states that she recognises Shae's accent as Lorathi?

And her mannerisms are definitely not indicative of porn. Just because she has nudity scenes with Tyrion?

You can argue that she's a bad actress but like others have said, her background and nationality are irrelevant.

The thing I have against HBO Shae is that they completely altered the character. In the books, Shae looks and acts like HBO Margaery. In the show, they made her a dangerous Mata Hari style character who at one point threatens Tyrion. What the fuck? I don't have issues with the actress, be she passable or bad, but what were HBO thinking of when they messed around with the characters this way?

They need to make certain characters more likeable. It'll make her storyline more dramatic in the future. We hear a lot about Shae in the books from Tyrion's POV and that's how we form an opinion of her whereas in the show it's written from no-one's POV so Shae would literally be an emotionless piece of meat that Tyiron fucks every so often. And then when it comes to Shae's betrayal of Tyrion in the next season those that haven't read the book will be like WTF? She was a wallflower. Giving her more personality and grit makes her memorable. Unfortunately in the show they have no room for sleeping characters. It's why they made Cersei more likeable and Bronn too.

I was always indifferent to Shae in the books but man do I hate her in the show. Every scene she's in is absolutely agonizing to watch. Her line delivery is like fucking razorblades. Whoever decided casting a Turkish pornstar in a speaking role was a good idea should be strapped to a chair and forced to listen to her read an assortment of slam poetry.

I am pleased for you.

Unfortunately I still can't understand her half the time.

Well watch more shows and television that aren't American then if you can't fucking understand her. Why do you want everyone to have perfect american accents just so YOU can understand them? Christ. I understand her just fine.

I also have a problem with you dismissing her due to her being Turkish***** and a former Porn star, as someone else mentioned, she has other works to her name and has won prestigious awards.

****And she is German, speaking with a pretty clear German accent. She was born and raised in Germany, her parents are of Turkish descent however.

You might not like her acting, but don't make stupid fucking throwaway comments about as actress based on where she is fucking from and having a former porn career, christ.

Most of the actors are British or Irish; can you understand them? Would you like them to switch to a nice American accent to make it easier for you??

Pffft. What dumb comments you've made.

Mirri maz durr.

In the books she was awful for what she did to Daenarys but I really saw her side of the story in the HBO series and thought she was completely sane to do what she did. I actually now don't blame her for killing the Khal and her baby because if I was raped, had my faith destroyed, had all my family and friends murdered and mutilated and was considered a slave for the rest of my life (No matter what Daenarys says), I would do anything to exact my revenge in the most destructive way!

This is the 3rd straight thread I have clicked on today in which the discussion involves porn, seemingly in no way connected to the title. I looked for a porn related title to get some good ASOIAF discussion, but alas could not find one.

I don't like Cat, not in the books, not on the show and probably never will.

But then I watch this interviews of Michelle Fairley (who plays Cat in the show) and it just makes me feel so guilty, she is a lovely woman! Funny, pretty!

This. I didn't mind Cat in the books but hated her in the show, and then I see Michelle Fairley in an interview or wherever and she seems like such an awesome person my soul feels bad.

I hated Cat in the books, there were very few POV chapters of hers I actually enjoyed. The one where Jaime tells the story of Rickard and Brandon's death comes to mind (I wish that story had made it into the episode with that scene). I don't hate her as much in the show but she's still not that great.

Anyone else got the impression that while the book brienne was very likeable and sympathetic, the show Brienne is portrayed as some kind of Nazi Killing Machine? Even reading aCoK i got a totally different impression of her, probably the character they changed most. Also really didnt like the dialogue between Arya and Tywin in the series. Charles Dance is probably one of the best actors in the show, but it seems that the Tywin who is super harsh and proud wouldnt engage into chatting with a servant in such a manner, other than that i'd say Tywin is the 3rd best portrayed character in the show (after Robert Baratheon and Jaime).

I disagree with that, I think Sean Bean's portrayal of Ned was by far the best on the show followed by Peter Dinklage as Tyrion and Harry Lloyd as Viserys. Also I think a lot of people forget to mention Conleth Hill, the guy hits it on the nail with his portryal of Varys in my opinion it's exactly how I imagined the spider. Don't get me wrong I think Charles Dance is amazing as Tywin but I don't think it's third best, i'd say it would be if we're only talking about characters that are still living on the show as of right now but not all-time. I think it's pretty easy to play a drunken angry fool like Robert and we'll see just how well Nikolaj Coster-Waldau really plays Jamie in this season and the upcoming ones after, as that's when the true complexity of Jamie's character comes into play.

TV Varys is awesome. In the books he's a bit comical and cartoony, which works fine, but it's sort of hard to appreciate and take him seriously since he's so...awkward if he were portrayed exactly the same as he was written. On the show he's oddly likable and witty, and seems more like a potential badass schemer. This is of course my opinion, but I would think you'd be hard pressed to find people that disliked his portrayal. Even the way he speaks is great. My personal favorite is:

"And we had been so close..." When Littlefinger is taking jabs at his lack of balls.

I don't know what are your sources but:

she is a professional actress with a couple of award winning art-house films on her resume,

she has done porn but it was before her acting career boomed,

I was not very impressed by her on this show, but she is definitely not the worst one and her porn past is totally irrelevant, as is her nationality.

I actually think the scenes she had with Tyrion in the last two episodes of season two were really good.  Especially the very last scene she has with him at the end of season 2 when she asks him to go away with her.  I personally thought that was an extremely powerful scene, but then again that's just my opinion.

Why is there any need to mention her professional past and and her ethnic background? And I like Sibel Kekilli as actress.

Or vice versa?

E.g. I never really liked Jorah in the books, but Iain Glen's performance of him in the show totally won me over. Especially the scene where he's talking to the Dothraki man about their fathers and armour and swords.

The Odd thing is book wise Tywin has no likable qualities but oddly enough I think he really liked Arya and some part of me thinks tv show Tywin has kinda an idea that the north girl is A Stark.

I am not a big fan of the actress playing Ygritte but liked her book wise.
