Were there any characters you hated in the books but really liked in the HBO show?

Recommended Posts

Tywin is charming in the series so he is way more likable than his book counterpart. Tyrion is also closer to a decent person trapped with his "evil" family than he is in the books. The Lannister are the best choices in the show; all the actors have improved or at least kept the quality of their characters. The only exception may Joffrey who is given TOO MUCH screen time IMO. But arguably if he is supposed to be a complete monster the show did a better job than the books did to enhance his character even if I would rather not see him so much. Theon is much more pathetic and tragic too (at least in ACOK).

Vice versa:

I was annoyed by Ygritte in the books but the TV series just made me hate the character. The storyline that I most dreaded in season 2, with the exception of Daenerys', was her sexual tension with Jon. Nothing against Rose Leslie who seems lovable in real life. I am also not a fan of Littlefinger in the TV show. Too sleazy. He has none of the charisma and subtle creepiness of his counterpart. He just seems like a smug asshole who isn't even that clever.

The "power is power" scene winds me up beyond belief. Book LF would NEVER be so stupid as to openly provoke Cersei and show (or at least hint) at his hand, like that.

I'm certainly not defending the scene (read my previous thoughts on the matter) but I would imagine it's another case where HBO needed something for the actors to do. In the novels, we have certain characters taking a backseat while they're away on business or plotting in the background (such as LF in ACOK) but HBO have these actors signed up and need to find some use for them - even if it means shoehorning them into badly written drama.

Super cool Cersei scene, beyond awful LF scene. They totally betrayed the character, mos def.

I was always indifferent to Shae in the books but man do I hate her in the show. Every scene she's in is absolutely agonizing to watch. Her line delivery is like fucking razorblades. Whoever decided casting a Turkish pornstar in a speaking role was a good idea should be strapped to a chair and forced to listen to her read an assortment of slam poetry.

"No one is going to rape me!" - cut to ridiculous leg-flash and the smallest knife ever made.

GGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you 100%. She's the weakest actress by a mile edit: in the show

I don't know what are your sources but:

she is a professional actress with a couple of award winning art-house films on her resume,

she has done porn but it was before her acting career boomed,

I was not very impressed by her on this show, but she is definitely not the worst one and her porn past is totally irrelevant, as is her nationality.

I actually think the scenes she had with Tyrion in the last two episodes of season two were really good. Especially the very last scene she has with him at the end of season 2 when she asks him to go away with her. I personally thought that was an extremely powerful scene, but then again that's just my opinion. :ohwell:

Amazing, the haters even managed to derail this thread. This a thread about characters you preferred in the show, not another thread about how much you hate changes.

I would say Bronn, since he's a lot funnier in the series.

Viserys, particularly when hze tries to steal the dragon eggs, that scene was very powerful, creds to Harry Lloyd. Controversial choice I know, but I hated Jeyne a lot more then Talisa, since Jeyne was just an irritating non entity in the books. Not to say that I like Talisa that much.

Apparently we have the same sources; that is, things that exist and are easily googled.

Her background is relevant in that her line delivery and mannerisms are indicative of most porno's (that X-Files one is surprisingly deece) and her nationality is relevant because her accent is distracting and at times indecipherable for non Turkish-Americans.

What is irrelevant is her Illustrious, award-winning career, because in the context of this show, the one we are discussing, it means....fuck all.

This reminds me of the guy that said things like "British African-Americans" when talking about black British people.

So, in your opinion, one has to be Turkish-American to understand a German actress, born and living in Germany, acting in English?

Thank you for participating in my humble social experiment. I thought of phrasing that several ways but decided that, since it's an American program, based on an American series by an American author on an American board, and, errr, I'm an American, it seemed appropriate, though I suspected some half-assed war cry of pseudo-political correctness would surely be incited. Derp derp derp.

The ease of understanding for me, and people like me (oh we simple, ignorant Americans) is predicated on...everybody now; me, not her. Her country of origin is of little matter; I can't fucking understand her. If she were Martian, we'd have to Martian-American's to understand her. Derp derp derp.

Anyway...errr...yeah. She's a fucking awful actress. Just so bad. Bad.

If you honestly can't understand her then you should have your ears checked because i'm an american and I can understand her just fine. The reason she doesn't have the typical regional british accents that the rest of the Westeros cast in the show use is because her character's not from Westeros so she's supposed to sound more foreign when compared to the Westeros characters, and I find it extremely hard to believe that you actually can't understand her. I'm hearing the same voice that your hearing and I can understand her just fine.

The thing I have against HBO Shae is that they completely altered the character. In the books, Shae looks and acts like HBO Margaery. In the show, they made her a dangerous Mata Hari style character who at one point threatens Tyrion. What the fuck? I don't have issues with the actress, be she passable or bad, but what were HBO thinking of when they messed around with the characters this way?

Those scenes bother me as well, but if they had a good actress playing Shae than I wouldn't really care.

I am pleased for you.

Unfortunately I still can't understand her half the time.
